  2. I also have my engine out currently repairing cracked cylinder head (both sides). 1999 C2 76K. Removed IMS flange this weekend and mine looks good as well. No play or unusual sound. Spins well. Still contemplating retrofit from LN Engineering.
  3. Thanks Loren, What exactly do you mean by the flat portion of the disk? The inner metal portion of the disk is everted on one side and inverted on the other. It looks to me that the everted side would face/fit into the pressure plate side, what do you think? Philip, I'm thinking about the IMS, may just do the simple bearing/nut change, as I dont know I'm going to actually bring my car back to life yet!!!! :P
  4. Have a 99 C2; currently have the engine out on a stand, and I have removed cylinder head. The head (1-3) is currently at the machine shop repairing a crack near spark plug recess #1. Had intermix problem like seen previously. I have removed the clutch pressure plate/disk and flywheel to put my engine on the stand. Unfortunately I did not mark or note which side of the disk faced the flywheel. I understand this makes a difference and may lead to problems upon reassembly. So my question is - can you figure out by looking at the disk which side is which? If not should I just bite the bullet and put in a new clutch? Also what should I do with RMS/IMS bearing, the car has not had any problems or leaks prior to intermix. (99 with 74K on the clock) Thanks in advance, Tim S

  7. Congratulations for a fellow "intermixer" My engine is out and on the floor of my garage. Just took off transmission, and beginning some cleaning before head disassembly. Great to hear your car running, I'm wondering if I will ever hear the same, as I'm about 8 months into my intermix ordeal. With luck I have a repairable head as well. Will get with you as may want my head to be repaired at same place! OUTSTANDING!!! I've forgotten what its like to drive my 996! :P Tim S

  9. My car is festering in my garage with the intermix issue despite new oil cooler, and multi-flush procedure myself. Actually I was wondering if I will need new radiators whenever I get enough jack to get a rebuild/new engine. Guess you just answered my question. Another question - did you replace all coolant lines as well?
  10. The oil in the cooling system should circulate to some extent and eventually make it's way to the highest point in the system(the re savor). I know this sounds crazy but I was first told this by a very knowledgeable factory tech. with 25 years of Porsche experience. Drain the cooling system and fill it with distilled water and about a cup a cup of Shout detergent. Elevate the rear end of the car with a floor jack and let it reach operating temperature then drain the system. Repeat this two or three more times or until you're satisfied that the majority of the oil has been removed. Then use only distilled water to flush the system of soap. Finally fill and bleed the cooling system. If you find that after 3 runs of the Shout you still have loads of oink in the system than you clearly have a serious problem. I know it's unorthodox but I've done it and it works like a charm. I still service several of the late cars I've done this with and after years they still show no ill effects from the soap. Feel free to flame away but remember I love you guys. :renntech: Sounds very much like what I came across -- the "freeze" plug blew -- and if you checked compression via the spark plugs -- everything would look good (one of mine didn't which confused the Porsche dealership into thinking the cylinder liner had cracked, but when we put the rings back on the piston for that cylinder I found that the wafer ring was missing -- we can't swear it was missing prior to disassembly but would contribute to the misdiagnosis) So if the freeze plug blew in yours -- coolant would mix with the oil -- but in my case the water pump sheared off -- so it was caused by overheating. did the indy completely flush the coolant? What does the oil look like? -- Does it still have coolant in it (the indy did replace it right?) m Any possibility is still possible. Indy did flush the coolant but to what extent I dont know. The oil after running the car a bit looks to me to have some coolant on the dipstick. I also can see some white spots inside the filler tube (but that could be from the original problem) Oil was changed as well (once) Tim

  13. Thanks for the info gents. A leak test was done on the coolant system which apparently checked out ok. Unlikely to have filled oil in coolant, this indy takes care of 911's frequently. Question, can the oil in the coolant system just sit there, or should I be trying to flush the system?
  14. Just got my 99 996 C2 back from indy shop. Had oil-coolant intermix. Indy replaced oil cooler and flushed coolant . Car drives fine, good power, no overheating. Unfortunately when I look in coolant tank I still have chocolate milk in the expansion tank. Also Dipstick looks tainted with coolant. I questioned the indy and he said the car is still "burping" or ridding itself of contaminants. I am very skeptical and expect I have significant inner engine problem (block/cylinder head crack). Indy stated compression on cylinders was ok. Any advice would be appreciated!!!! Should I flush coolant, change oil again, or just start saving money for a new engine?

  16. My ride is at TechAuto in the Heights a friend with 02 996 Turbo referred me My 996 has 76K miles, ran perfectly until light came on for coolant. Very much hope engine isnt blown. Will talk to the guy evaluating it today.
  17. I am in Houston, TX Cause of my 99 996 C2 failure unknown. Coolant in oil, and vice versa. Low coolant warning light only symptom! Significantly bummed!!! :angry: Car is at indy shop for a while, no diagnosis yet. From my reading coolant in oil = death/engine replacement. No warranty, so I may have to start delivering pizza for a decade to buy new engine! :lol:

  20. I am in mourning. My 99 C2 996 bit the dust this week. After 2 years of dependable service (water pump excluded) I got a coolant warning light. Opened up the rear to find thick pancake batter in the coolant tank and the same in the oil filler tube. After a few choice words and "the look" from the wife, I assume this engine has had catastrophic failure (also know as "giving up the ghost"). It has become a shrine in the garage as I dont have the 10 -12K at this point to get a new engine. Question - should I do anything to the car at present? No one has even looked at it yet, or can I just let it sit on jack stands for extended months for me to sell one of my children to fund my new engine? P.S. I just put four new Michelin PS2's on the **** thing! Have a few friends with 996's, and I have warned them they may wake up soon sans engine! Porscheless in Texas
  21. I also broke my lock adapter. Went to the dealer and had all the locking bolts removed for standard ones. They were a pain in the butt anyway!
  22. I was also worry about the reliability of the Porsche so I had a new Acura TL (6 years ago) as my extra vehicle. End up my Porsche has less issue and more reliable. Honda & Acura should be a brand name Japanese build, but I found out most 6 cylinders carry the same components as the 4. The extra weight and power cause problems with front rotors and the transmission. It is a known issue over all the Honda forum and Honda has not corrected it when I sold my TL last year. Bottom line is the known problem issues of the 996 like the cooling tank or the RMS, compare to a $3000.00 Honda transmission, is nothing. Also only a small percentage of 996 owners have these problems. All the TL owners I meet have front rotor issues before 30K miles and half of them have transmission problem. Have a 99 C2 coupe manual. Bought it with 62K on the clock 18 months ago, no PPI, no service records, $30,000. Not too smart, but after test drive my enthusiasm got the best of me. Found this forum following my purchase and began my eduational process. I have put 10K on it since purchase and it runs like a dream. Maintenance and tires, then pads, oil, and replaced a water pump. None of which was cheap. My vehicle doesnt leak a drop of oil and I drive it daily. I do not feel any imminent dread of engine failure, the car EATS the road. It salivates to get out of the garage. I think the reported risk of engine failure overrated, and these cars come at a bargain! Even if it eats the dust, life is not over, pick yourself up dust off, and find that next Porsche to drive!
