  1. Keep in mind that reformulated fuels in use in many places in the US will start to deteriorate after 30 days. Non reformulated fuel (pure gasoline) has a shelf life of about 90 days.

    Very good point on the fuel. I fill the tank with non-oxy fuel (usually the last couple of fills are non-oxy) before storing for the winter and also use a stabilizer. Since I store in an heated facility (45 to 50 degrees) I don't do much other than increase the tire pressure to 50 psi to prevent flat spots. I also throw in a couple of dryer fabric sheets for fragrance and some contend it keeps out rodents (an old boat storage trick). The place I store at disconnects the battery since charges are against code. No problems the past 2 winters.

    Glad to find out about the fabric sheets. I had mice nest on top of my engine last winter next to the oil cooler. They didn't gnaw through any wiring or hoses that I could see. I tried oil of mint but to no avail.

  2. We take our 98 986 w 88k miles on long trips and have had no issues. I do make a good check list before hand to inspect ALL of the fluids and pressure in the tires. I also take along 1 qrt of oil and a small tool kit (better to be safe than sorry) Other than that except for the the cramped qtrs it's a great experience. We recently upgraded the OEM radio to a new Pioneer head unit w/SIRRUS and it makes a world of difference when we are crusing on longer trips. When you do find some open hwy or a nice road with some twists it's allot of fun to enjoy the performance. Have a great trip.

  5. I've always thought I was a little too protective of my Boxster when I used a cover while it was parked in my garage. Yesterday afternoon I realized I was being prudent. My daughter came in and told me she couldn't get into the garage door where my Boxster was parked. I went out and found the greasy chain had broken away from the drive and fallen down on top of the car. Fortunately I had the cover on and there was no damage. If the cover was off, the top would have a lot greasy kid stuff on it. If the top was down, I don't even want to think what would have happed. I'll always keep my car covered and keep an eye on the chain connection. The photo was taken on the right side of the car looking to the rear.

  6. I changed the battery on my key and the remote functions no longer work. The red LED on the key flashes when any of the three functions are pressed but the doors or trunk doors do not operate. The door can be manually unlocked with the key. My question is there a code or some sequence I need to do to get the functions to work? My son has a Mazda 6 and to get the functions to work with the key is a series of steps to activate. I was wondering if there is a similar process for a Boxster or is a trip to my dealer in my near future.

    I kinda feel like a Martian getting defeated by germs here... but I just fought this same battle for the last 20 minutes only to discover I had mistakenly changed out the wrong bulb. I can only hope your (or others') problems are so easy to solve!

    Tomorrow, I'm changing out the differential pinion seal on my camaro. I harbor no preconceptions that it will be anywhere near as easy.

    Ha, I did the same thing several years ago. I spent about an hour trying to figure out what the problem was until I figured it out. Good luck with the new lights. I switched to the Silver Stars too and their great.

    I can't comment on the size, but I replaced my tires a couple of years ago with Sumitomo HTR Z II, I was a little hesitant due to their cost, (inexpensive) but did some research and the majority of the review were all good. A lot of the cost for the major brands seems to be for advertising. I can tell you their sticking power is amazing and they aren't too bad in the rain. They're summer tires so you can use them year round in Houston. They may not be what you need for the straight highways down there, but in western New Jersey where I live with the curvy roads, it's almost like cheating. Good luck and enjoy driving your Boxster.

  9. I have the same nagging problem. When you say remove the heat shield and wrap the areas. Just what do you wrap? I'd love to fix this problem. This is the only ongoing problem I've had with my 02 and I'd love to fix it.

  10. I've recently pickup a rattle on my 01 Boxster S. It is coming from the right rear, and you only hear it when you rev the engine. Sounds alot like a loose or vibrating shroud or heat shield of some sort. Its only a nuisance, but it didn't do it before.

    Ideas or an obvious place to look?

    Sounds like it might be your exhaust heat shields, especially since you state that you only hear it when you rev the engine.

    You can replace the bolts that hold them in place. Some have removed them and wrapped the areas with exhaust wrap "tape".

  11. If this is the broken clip you are talking about - then replace it.

    Tool Pants, don't know if you realize it or not but you've helped me out several times to your replies to other people during the last year. You replied to my respones last year about the clip that holds the light socket in place. I duct taped it and as temperary fixes go it turned out to be temperary. Do you have the part number of the yellow clip that I need or can you please tell me where to find it. If not, I'll try the local Porsche Dealer. Thanks.

  12. LOL... i have not investigated the OF f yet, although that cracks me up every time i see it. I'll take a pic, maybe tomarrow. As far as the boxer guys having trouble, i dont know what to say, it was "mildly" difficult, but nothing impossible. It was no harder than the install of the short shifter ;). I have gigantic fingers too...so if i can do it, anyone should be able to.

    We'll see how it works in the long term though, if i have some major problems i'll post em up to let you know. Anway, if anyone wants to give it a whirl and has a question feel free to drop me a line drjustinrichardson@hotmail.com . I'll try to help!

    I did mine last weekend and it came out great. The instructions above were very helpful, especially when I got to the part where the window is too big for the inset. I made the cut and wedged some plastic in the open area. Hopefully it will stay together, it seems very tight. Anything is better than the half numbers. Thanks for your input.

    I have a dark blue that I bought used, it had the best motor and condition, but if I bought a new one, I would buy the Speed Yellow or Guards Red. Hey, it's a Porsche!!!

  14. where is your cup holder located Bill?

    If it's located in the middle,then not an option with PCM.

    The cup holders that came with my 2003 slide out with interesting engineered assembly. You push the tab on the right, the mechanism pops out for the first cup and then you need to pull on it for the second up. I'm not sure if this is the same as the 2002. Anyway, last week I went to the dealer becuase my cup holder will no longer close correctly - $218.00 for a replacement assembly! I'm still without a cup holder so I'm glad to see other options.

    Yes, exactly, it's in the middle of the dash right above the radio and climate control...

    That sounds like what I have on my 02. A mechanical marval that can only hold a can of Red Bull. I don't usually drink anything when I drive, I use my car on the weekends, but there are times I would enjoy a can of soday or a cup of coffee and there is no way with what I have. ;)

  15. The Boxster doesn't have a timing belt- it utilizes a timing chain, and you're not going to have to replace that. What you do need to change is the polyrib serpentine belt which operates the engine's accessories like the water pump, a/c, alternator, etc. Porsche recommends changing this belt at the 60K mile service interval.   16. Recently the Northern New Jersey Porsche club sponsered a discussion on routine basics for Boxsters which I was unable to make. One topic was when to replace the timing belt. I have not been able to find anything on the Search Engine here and was wondering when one should replace the belt. Is it driven by mileage or time? Thanks

    That was a good question, I was cleaning my throttle body a couple of weeks ago and was wondering the same thing. If you haven't cleaned your throttle body, it's a good idea to do so. Keeps the idle constant and the engine operating efficently.

    Tom, can you post a pics or a quick set of DIY steps for doing the throttle body cleaning on the 986 correctly?

    I don't have step by step instructions but here's what I have.

    The way I removed it was to first remove the air duct then, you'll need long handled torx wrenches (star sheped) to remove the four bolts throught the throttle body.

    The hardest part was getting the air duct back onto the throttle body. I've had mine off two times. The first time I used grease to help slide the body back on but was cautioned by Loren not to use grease in this area since it attracts dirt and grime. The second time I used a heat gun to expand the end of the duct so it would go over the intake to the throttle body. Others have told me it just snaps in. The end that connects to the air box does but the other end is a bear. Good luck.

    Ok, got it all done. Idle after running it seems to show up somewhere in the 650-700 range. Seems a whole lot smoother and more responsive with the cleaning. Was a little bear to get that rigid air intake pipe off, but I managed. It was gummed up moderately, but probably enough to affect the proper closing/opening. Figured that after bringing it to 3 Porsche repair centers, they could have at least cleaned the throttle body and the engine compartment. I just don't know where the heck customer service has gone --- I doubt any of them even opened the engine compartment. Feel like taping a $100 bill to the engine and see if any of them actually find it.....people are far too reliant on their fancy diag testers and don't perform proper maintenance and customer care, IMHO.

    Thanks for the info --- hope it will help my gas mileage out, but I cannot imagine how much more fuel I was using at idle at 1000rpms vs. 650-700 ----

    I had the same problem several months ago and cleaned the intake side of the throttle body. I didn't have the proper tools to actualy take the body off and couldn't get to the other side of the throttle body. The idle smoothed out but started to come back a couple of weeks ago. By then I had the tools to remove the throttle body and cleaned the back side of the throttle body. It was very dirty. That completely solved the problem. I have a 2002 S and your idle is the same as mine. Sometimes it's the simple things.
  19. Thanks Maurice, As for the Sig image, im waiting on a photoshop pro that i know from another forum that is really good at making sigs to make one for me.

    She looks great, glad your story had a happy ending. :) My boxster is the same color and I have some nicks that the previous owner tried to repair with touchup paint and didn't do too good of a job. Plus the fornt bumper has some road rash. Hopefully next spring I'll get mine in the shop for some work.
