  1. My'99 C2 Tip also had a tick like you described. It was at the right bank that was present all the time. Soft in volume (like a screwdriver tapped against the head) but speeded up as you revved the engine Spoke to all the specialists and they figured it was a lazy lifter. Left the car in to be serviced and it turned out to be a sightly loose spark plug. I fix cars myself but this one was new to me and the specialist including the main dealer. Anyway, happy ending as there was no damage to the head.

Thanks Minny! I had similar ticking sound that was so distinctive that it had me concerned I might be in for a huge expense. Can't tell you how happy I was to find a loose spark plug! Tightened up on the plug and the ticking is gone.

I'll have to make another donation to RennTech.Org! :renntech:

  2. After ignoring my check engine light for several weeks my 2000 996 failed to start immediately after refueling. The engine would turn over very well but wouldn't catch. After two or three tries and maybe 3 to 5 minutes the car would start. This happened twice (for some reason I dread sitting in a disabled Porsche in public). I thought it was time to take it in however, next refuel didn't result in restart problem.

A few days later I am accelerating after entering the boulevard and all of a sudden I loose power. Fortunately I was lucky to be able to pull off the road into a parking lot with the momentum I had established (avoided that dreaded incident of being on side of the road in a disabled Porsche). I engaged the parking brake, put transmission in neutral and attempted to rev up the engine. RPM would not exceed 1300 regardless of pedal position. Now I knew it was time to take it in (duh). I turned the car off and restarted it. Surprisingly I could now rev the engine to any level.

Figured my luck may be running low so I had it towed into the shop. Diagnosis was failed evap fuel valve. Just got it back. The part that was replaced listed as a "Vent Line" on shop invoice. Part number 996 110 129 52 maps to something called a "Regeneration Valve From Throttle Body for Fuel Vapor System". Check engine light is gone and seems fine. For some reason this doesn't feel like it's over. Will update later on whether it solved my problem.

  3. Have you made any progress in finding the fault yet? I have exactly the symptoms you describe.

No progress. Haven't taken the car in for the test. It's taking me a while to "pucker up" :) Although the beeping and clicking is "driving me up the wall".

Just received assessment. Water damage to Alarm Control Unit under driver's seat. Alarm Control Unit needs to be replaced. This was likely caused by clogged drain ( I have noticed moisture on floor behind drivers seat before). I could live without an alarm at this stage however, I'm told that it's not possible to disconnect the alarm system. I read that these units have to be programmed so I suspect it's not likely a DIY job if all you have is a set of metric wrenches (like myself). Also, unless I can find the "key code" I'll need to purchase new keys to remotely lock/unlock the car.

  4. I have an 2000 996 and recently noticed that my doors will lock and unlock periodically while I'm driving. Sometimes I press the dash switch to unlock the door and the horn beeps twice, interior lights come on and the lock remains engaged. The lights dim after a few seconds. Sometimes while unlocking the door with the key remote the horn will beep twice. The car is certainly trying to tell me something I just don't speak beep. Please help!

  5. Hello everyone on my way home last night my daily toy hit 149000 miles.

  6. Greetings again!

I am working with my dealer to track down high oil consumption. It has not reached the value needed for warranty intervention, but is getting close. Car is a 3.6L 996; 2003; about 35K miles.

So far, here is what I can say:

Car seems to run fine . . .

    No drips at all.

Quite a bit of soot above left exhaust. Almost small black droplets here and there. Much less on right.

    No oil in coolant.

    No smoke.

Recently we ran a compression test and a leakdown, both with good results. Compression values varied about 2% between cylinders (210 to 215), and leak down was only 1 to 2 % per cylinder.

I have asked the service team about the AOS, but the absence of smoke makes them think the AOS is OK.

Still under CPO, by the way.

    Any suggestions RennTech?

    Thanks again!

  7. 2000 C2 Coupe, 6 speed - original owner, 106,000 smiles. 3rd RMS counting original. Replaced Transmission at about 90,000 miles (not smiling at that moment). Burning about 1Qt oil every 2000 miles or so. I drive it everyday. Some days I drive it with no where to go. I am really hoping for at least 200,000. Can anyone comment on whether oil consumption is coincident with the reported engine failures?
