  1. PS2's are great in the wet in my experience. I am on my third set on the BMW and first set on the Porsche. No complaints.

    Hi guys. I live in the Pacific Northwest and use the 997S to get to and from work (~ 50% highway, 50% city driving), and for some moderately-spirited weekend fun when dry (no tracking). I don't plan on driving it in the snow, which does not happen much where I live. Instead, we get a lot of rain. So I'm trying to decide whether to get a non-approved all-season tire (RE960AS) or an approved summer tire (PS2) and just drive much more carefully in the rain. I currently have PS2s that I will have to replace soon, but just got the car and haven't had a chance to test them through our "wet season" (which is pretty much all-year long except for a brief period in the summer).

    The trouble I'm having is that I've searched the threads here and elsewhere (and read websites like tirerack.com, etc.), but I can't seem to find a direct comparison of "Ultra High Performance All-Season" vs. a "Max Performance Summer" tires. I'm trying to understand, for example, how a 9.0 "wet performance" rating in one category would compare to another. I'm assuming the ratings differ across categories of tires on a relative basis? I'd love to see cross-category comparisons so I can see how much I'm sacrificing in each category.

    Bottom line is that I'd sacrifice some dry-weather performance for improved wet-weather performance. Will the RE960AS be significantly better than the PS2s in wet weather/resistance to hydroplaning? If so, will they then be significantly worse than the PS2s in dry weather handling? I'm not pushing the car to it's limits by any stretch of the imagination, but I don't want to end up with a car that doesn't handle like a "Porsche", because of the all-season tires, for the occasional times on dry pavement that I want it to.

    Any thoughts?

    I don't know the performance of the RE960AS, but I guess this is a Bridgestone tyre. Anyway, unless the the PS2 are worn down the wet performance of the PS2 is excellent. The traction and grip is far better than most people ever will know. In Norway we got a lot of rain and too and I have alse tested the PS2 at Nurburgring when raining with speeds above 200 km/h without problems with hydroplaning.

    For your use and condition you should be very satiisfied with the Michelins.

  2. I push the shifter forward into first, pull it back into second. Doesn't everybody? It sound odds to me to push back into first and pull forward into second. I pull the MPG reset in the same direction as second, "back", if that helps you.

    Reset the dash MPG by adjusting the lower left lever until the average MPG shows and then pull it straight back and hold until the reset occurs. Can do likewise with the average MPH as well.

    I think you mean to say pull it straight forward.

  3. Looks great. I thought I saw one on ebay in March. It was some shade of orange. A C4S in Houston. Might check the completed items. They also have a new Boxster S I have seen in that color.

    I think a signal orange 997 would be hot hOT HOT!

    not sure what you would do on the interior - Black or grey with Matching SIGNAL ORANGE leather accents maybe? I think it would be very unique in any case.

    I'd like to see a special edition 997 with the baby blue /orange gulf colors. That would be hot too!

  4. Skip the nav. Buy a Garmin Nuvi when you need a GPS. Easier to deal with and cheaper. And who needs nav much anyway? Much less always on, permanently installed. Maybe if you were delivering packages or making sales calls, but in a C2S? Not likely.

    I would be sure it has the sport seats. Not the comfort seats. Check the Tire Rack for your model. PS2's are expensive. For the C4S, which I just bought, it was $550 each for the rears and $300 plus each for the front. Plus installation, which is not trivial with those high dollar 19's of yours. C2S tires are the next size down in the rear, 295 v 305. You should get at least 10k on the rear tires. More on the front. I do not have the full leather. I think it would be cool to have, but I would not let the lack keep me from going for a good deal. I also have the basalt black with tan standard leather. Nicer than most cars. You will love the sport exhaust and shifter. Sport chrono is gingerbread which is fun to play with, but it takes a 12 year old to figure it out. I have not figured mine out yet.

    CPO if you are going thru a dealer. The process will highlight everything wrong with the car, and they will recommend fixing it or not.

    Shop around if you like, but the miles are low if you like the color and the price works for you. It is a buyers market but it is coming into peak selling season.

  5. Have you been to TireRack.com ? I would look there and call them. They make a living both from performance automobiles and from winter tires and will have an idea that works and will stand behind it. I have bought tires from them exclusively for over 15 years. Just scope out their website and call one of their experts and see if you are not pleased with the outcome. Good luck.

    The C4S is a wide body and comes with wider rear wheels/tires.

    I'd think you should stick with 295's. Why would you want to go with narrower tires? :huh:

    I want to put Z rated All seasons on the car. The fattest all season tires available are 275/35/ZR18.

    Factory recommends 265/35/ZR18 on the rear as long as the wheels are 18x10J

    I am uncertain if the C4S Coupe comes with 18x10J or 18x11J on the rear wheels.

    If they are 18x11J, then I will have to use the 275/35/ZR18, which makes a 2% diff (which is still below the safety limit of 3%).

  6. How can I tell a Mk1 from a Mk2. is this based on the year or not. How much better is the 997 vs the 996? Is the 2004 or the 2005 preferred, or pretty much the same? I haved read that this GT3 engine is the best Porsche engine available to the consumer. Is this consistent with your view?

    Could you really drive this car every day or would it annoy your neighbors and scrape on the parking lot entrance? Is it quiet enough inside to carry on a conversation on the highway or do you have to raise your voice?

  7. Possible purchase for me to drive every day. Supple leather, partial leather seat. Not full leather (Vinyl elsewhere) inside. PSM. CD. Most options ex leather. Is this problematic? Is a five year old car, in the mid $40's, an ok buy? Price like a Boxster, for a 911 seems to make sense intuitively. Not everything you want but pretty mint.

    Do these cars have limited slip standard or not? I was thinking surely they do. But does it have to be specified?

    Or should I go for a higher mileage 997 or later 996?

  9. Mid 40's delivered price. Lo teens mileage. Hi options. Aero kit. Leather. Nav. 18's. One owner. Metallic Blue. Said to be perfect. I am new to Porsche. This seems like an extra nice car fully priced. I have not driven a Porsche 911 but I hear it is fun. Car is out of state. Dealer is highly recommended to me found it and is prepared to bring it in for me to look at. Does this seem like a car worth buying? Would you go for a newer car at a higher price? Higher miles at a lower price? A Cayman S for a few more dollars? Or what?
