  1. Today I installed the Europipe Stage 1 exhaust system on the 02 X50 and I have to say that the sound is exactly what I wanted. You can tell there's an upgraded exhaust there, but it's not obnoxiously loud....however as you hit 4000 to 6000 rpms, it opens up very nicely. Since it has 100 cell cats, the turbos spool up quicker and the back pressure has been reduced considerably, but there's no CEL's thrown at all...and absolutely no drone at any rpm. I bought the system off another Rennlister who wanted to mod his Porsche to 700 and the Stage 1 is limited to 600 HP. I'm content to stay where I am and enjoy the wonderful sound of a great system. The downside of Europipe is the cost, but I couldn't be more pleased.

If you go to the Europipe website, it has all the db ratings from inside and outside measured at various rpms, and compared to the stock systems....so it gives you a fairly accurate way to judge the sound levels.

You do realize that the lower back pressure and faster spool with the EP is **tehcnically** a mod that can lead to Porsche denying a engine faulire related claim. Technically they would be correct.

  2. Software works sequentially.

After some period of observation the SW decides "rpm too high, cut fuel"

If the engine is accelerating wildly, then perhaps the time it takes for this step is long enough that within the next time period the DME analyzes the engine will already be into a Type 2 over rev.

Remember these are step, by step computations and calculations- all piggybacked onto a continuous mechanical process.

I will not hold my breath for Porsche to provide clarification- other than the party line "Type 2 is abuse, Type 2 is abuse, Type 2 is abuse" you get it. Why possible reason would they have for exposing the truth on this matter?

PS It doesn't happen on the "up shift" it is on the 'late shift'....

  3. Same question- What is the software hack that allows GM nav CDs to be used in Porsche???

I have a similar question to the OP:

    Can a PCM2.1 be used in a 2004 996 that already has a PCM2.0?

The 2004 is a MOST bus.

The PCM2.0 is an integrated unit- Nav+display in one unit.

The PCM2.0 uses CDs for maps and they get loaded in and out of the front of the unit. The detail on the map SUCKS.

So, can a 2.1 be retrofitted into a car that had a 2.0? I hear "yes" but have never found anyone that has done it!

    Thanks

  4. I jus bought my 996TT, contributed to this forum, and I must say I'm pretty disapointed. After days and days there are no new posts and the activity seems really low compared to 6speed and others. Whats the story? Why is no one posting here and why is the activity so low?

Well, I say 'quality not quantity'.

There are a couple of issues- the focus here is tech, which draws less input simply because there is less true 'info' than 'opinions'. This site is also highly segmented (this is a criticism) and this make navigation difficult, and really cuts down on the odds that a post will be seen.

I regularly visit 6speed, but find the solid technical advice to be limited. a few % of the posts are of a caliber that you can 'take it to the bank'. I find those that know (on 6speed) are tuners and they will not disclose very much (other than as a hook to bring in business). (BTW, I HAVE NO ISSUE WITH THIS. Just the way it is. ) In the BMW world there are way more DIYs so more tech knowledge is shared. IMHO.

I need to post here more often though, just need to think up intelligent stuff to say <_<

    My quick two cents.

  5. I just bought an 02 996TT X50 that will be delivered in about 7-10 days from back east. I have a question about getting the car certified for California emissions.....hopefully there are California guys on this forum.

With an all wheel drive like the TT...how do they usually smog your cars? Very few smog stations can do an All Wheel Drive vehicle, so what do they usually do? I'm going to have to smog mine in a week or so and need to know the process.

    Chuck

Pretty sure they skip the dyno and just use a tailpipe sniffer.

Mine was delivered yesterday (996tt x50 as well) and that is what my local shop said.

Too busy driving to take it in for smog! :) Did manage to get temp tag at dmv...
