I keep seeing that others have "desnorkeled " their Boxster. What does this mean and where can I read about it?
means you pulled out the intake's sound muffler on a 986. makes the engine sound much more aggressive especially at 4K RPMs and higher. Negligible sound increase at idle. Takes less than 10 min to do
Here's a link to one set of instructions:

I'm sure others can be found in the archives here.
It's really only for the 986 as w/ the 987 it's been reported (unofficially) your mileage will be dramatically reduced.
Thanks for the Quick Reply-I'll give it a try this weekend.
I made the change-love the sound difference but it triggered a Check engine light for my MAFS. I will clean it again and re-set. Thanks for sending the file with photos-very helpful.

Well now,
figured i'd share this little bit of customization.
originally, had the standard ashtray, the lid no longer stayed closed.
then i bought the non-smoker kit. liked it better than a busted ashtray but still not that useful.
the other day i was looking at my old 4g ipod, and realized the width was just about perfect to fit width-wise into the old ashtray bezel.
this type of install is only good if you plan on only rarely taking the ipod out of the car. mine is a big clunker 40gb so i only take it out to update song every so often.
also have an rf wireless remote to control tracks and such without using the ipod. although with this mounting, its pretty easy to skip back and forth without looking at the ipod.
so, anyway, an hour or so with a dremel tool has resulted in this.
nothing to see here.
hey, look! i have an ipod in my ashtray. still not really safe to use while moving. but in general, i like not seeing any wires and think its a simple, clean install. also, putting the ashtray lid back on helps cut down on unwanted attention from thieves and such.
just a few cuts and a bit of grinding to get a perfect(ish) fit.
a kind of big hole for the dock connector. this is for the ipod connector from the aux input. the one from pie or whatever.

all that's left of the ashtray door. now just used as anti-theft.
Very cool. How does the remote work?

Part 2 coming very soon !
This weekend I will be replacing the head unit and amplifier. I will write that one up as well. I think I'll call it "Guide_to_Modifying_the_Boxster_Sound_System - Part_Deux" :P
Andy-looking forward to the Amp and head unit discussion-Thanks for taking the time!

Very interested in your vfbox's adapters. Let me know if still available:jsellers5@cox.net
It seems like it has taken forever (2 months with all the interuptions), but I finshed one of the more economical upgrades of Boxster stereo speakers in my 2003 S today.
I elected to continue to use the factory CDR23 HU and Becker BE660 Amp because I wanted to retain the stock appearance and as they are linked by fiberoptics, if you change one, you must change both.
Andy Morris' DIY on stereo upgrades is a great guideline to start with and along with that and some personal e-mail advice from Andy I completed the task for less than $450.
I used Harvey Peck's PNP rear speaker kit to start with and then installed 4" MB Quart DKD 110s with vfbox's foam baffles in the dash and 5 1/4" MB Quart DKE 113s in the doors using the stock baffles modified slightly ala Dremel.
The transformation is phenomonal and the results far outweigh the money spent. Those of you thinking about upgrading your system, should do so.
I would like to have a little more amplifier power, but then again I don't want to deal with the fiberoptic compatibility issue.
I initially tried to use some of vfbox's adapter plates to fit the dash speakers, but ended up cutting up the original speakers to do the adaptation because of some clearance problems. These adapter plates are really a nice item and I would guess that they work well in 95% of the Boxster applications. I have them available at a much reduced price, should any of you be interested in them.
Many thanks to Andy Morris for taking the time to put his detailed DIY on the Forum and now I'm on to the next project: the exhaust system.

That's what I thought-I also recently added a K&N filter so that may be the culprit here. MAFS seem to have a shorter life expectancy here in Southern California for some reason ( air quality?) but this car has only 23k on it. I'll clean and pray! Thanks.
