  1. If the tumbler jams or falls apart (as several have) you will need to replace the whole lock and switch assembly with the new style. As I recall the part is about $200 (discounted).

I hear that the tumbler needs to be recoded. If so do you know if the key transmitter must be reprogrammed? Does the tumbler come blank or coded to my original keys? Do you know any one that cuts and codes these keys? Thanks again for the info.

  2. Check but it might be the ignition switch which is a common failure on our car.

I just had mine replaced last week and had the same symptoms. Check the archive.

FYI you can get the part for $10 on autohauz, my mechanic charged me $50 for the part and 1hr of labor.

I had a track day next day so I could not wait, otherwise I would have done it myself.

    Good luck.

Yeah I replaced the ignition switch assy. it was easy. But the car still thinks the key is still in the ignition. Steering wheel column does not lock, stereo still stays on. could it be anything else?

  3. Th emergency release cable is behind the right front wheel well liner. It has been covered many times here. You just need to reach in there and pull the cable.

i had a similar situation. However the emergency cable would not release the hood. The emergency cable appears to be binding.Any other way to access

  4. I removed my key from my 98 986 but the door chime stays on, the dash lights stay on, Stereo also on. I replaced the ignition switch, accesory still on, I took car to local dealer ship stated tumbler needs to be replaced. Dealer to charge 750.00. I spoke with local european car mechanic he states its the steering lock, Anyone have any suggestions?
