  1. I couldn't pry out the exhaust after unbolting the flange so instead I tried to polish the exhaust while still attached to the car. I first used 600 grit sandpaper with "Mother's Chrome Polish", then 800, then 1500 to finish. I then used a 10" buffer (used for waxing) to finish it off with 1 coat of Chrome polish and 1 coat of wax. This doesn't look as good as removing it and using a drill attachment but it's a good alternative for people that don't have a drill and can't remove the exhaust.

  2. I just completed the 30K mile service on my car yesterday, belt, spark plugs, brake bleed (from track event), clutch bleed, and added radiator debris cleaning for good measure as a winter to-do.

    Since I was doing so much, I got the car up on jacks, remove all wheels. Also decided to remove rear bumper cover, heat shields, and mufflers including the muffler mounting bracket. In all it added about 30 mins as my Dad was helping out.

    I have replaced plugs in my other 996 before with just the rear wheels removed. And I wanted to tell you that replacing the plugs with all the other parts removed was a world of difference. Lots of room to get to the bolts and remove the plugs. For the small added time, I would STRONGLY recommend it as you could spend a lot less time in the long run struggling and cursing. I know, I still remember.

    When you removed the muffler, was there a gasket you had to replace? Did you notice any exhaust leaks?

  3. Hello there...My 996 3.6 was measured at 302hp when completely stock...With porsche sport exhausts,KN air intake system and remap ECU the car produced 329hp...It is a difference of 27hp...If you buy only the exhausts you will gain 7hp and 1kgm torque throughout the whole rpm range...
    Sorry, I have never seen a PSE (only install) produce any HP gain.

    Thanks for the replies. I guess I'll hold off for a while. 20 HP would be a more realistic gain from a ECU upgrade compared to 30. Does your car pass smog with all those mods + the chip upgrade?

  5. I just finished changing my plugs, man what a pain in the rear but there is no better feeling then finishing the job.

    Here's a few pointers that helped me.

    1. grease up the other end of the spark plug (only the part that makes contact with the socket), this way your spark plug socket does not get stuck onto the plug.

    2. I used many small extensions to get to the plugs. I would get 1 part of the extension in the space first, and then I would get another extension into the small space and then connect it while i"m in the small space. For me, this was the easiest approach. There are alot of other ways to do it but this was the easiest for me.

I have been using regular microsoft player (whatever comes loaded "free" in the puters) to burn music CD's without any issues, by either downloading and burning or making a copy from an original. Just did it last week, had no issues with CD-R. But do recall having issues with re-recordables CD's......

    I know this is a little late to reply to this forum but as people always say, better late then never...

    I have the exact same problem using NERO (many different versions even the new version 7.1) to encode my CD's. The fix is to use another software. I'm currently using Easy CD-DA Extractor 10 (Professional). You can find it here, http://www.poikosoft.com/ After trying the newly created Audio CD using that program, the same songs sound 100x better (no skips, no hisses, and best part of all, much better audio quality). I hope this helps anyone that runs into the exact same problem.

    I was thinking about installing an aftermarket Kenwood MP3 deck in my 99 Carrera and I stumbled upon this wiring diagram.

    So far, I figured out how to remove the 2 verticle pieces (left and right of the CD 220 deck) but I can't seem to figure out how to remove the rest. Do you guys have any pointers or additional documents I can reference to for further instructions?

  8. Hi,

    I heard there is an addital plug / bolt (besides the oil pan drain plug), you need to unscrew in order to get the oil to drain down to the secondary tank? Is this the case or are they referring to older porsches? (I have a 99 Carrara RWD)

    Yes, that comments is from the older air cooled Porsche's with a separate oil tank.

    In the current version cars only GT2, GT3, and TT have a separate oil tank to drain. But that is covered here in the DIY sections.
