A repair to the instrument cluster fixed the problem. 650 dollars- I am not sure what they did- but its fixed.
-
The instrument cluster was "repaired" at the cost of 650.00 plus tax. That did the trick. I couldn't get any additional information about what got "fixed" but it's working so I guess that is fixed enough for me. What a colossal pain in the butt. Thanks all for the help!

I have a loaner instrument cluster in for the weekend. So far so good no warning lights. If this holds out until Monday they will send my instrument cluster in for repairs. ($650.00) The loaner instrument cluster must be from a hardtop because the top wont go down. On the bright side it only has 8000 miles on it.

I just picked up the car with a brand new alternator! (548.00 parts) (270.00 labor) The specialist said that it was a common problem. On the way home all the lights came on again! Back to the shop next week. Nice...

I am kind of out of ideas. I guess I will take it to a shop on Tuesday. (uhg)
Thanks for the ideas though.
When I find out what the problem is I will report back.

I have a feeling it may be the ABS Module. Come to think of it just before all this started I was getting some weird shuttering on a few very low speed stops.
A few more questions...
Is replacing the ABS module straight forward?
If so where is the best place to buy one? (online USA)
Is the procedure described anywhere on this site? (I couldn't find it)
Again- thank you thank you thank you!

Epic Fail- the warning lights are back. (uhg) (ABS failure- break distribution failure- check engine light) What is the next thing to try?
Thanks!

Oh Renntech joy!
The cluster had not been out ever but I went ahead and reset all the connectors and cleared all the faults and all is as it should be. Took a spin around the neighborhood with a great feeling having conquered a problem with the help of friends that would have cost me a grand at the dealer.
Thanks Loren and Wvicary!

Here are the codes out of the Durametric. It is only the second time I used it- but I think I got them all. I would really appreciate any help in making heads or tails of this!

I haven't had a chance to attach the Durametric yet but I have new info
While working on an unrelated roof rattle and roof hook refusing to latch issue. (sigh). The failure lights began to flash. While this was happening the car was cycling the rear wing! Any ideas?
I will attach the Durametric when I get the power suppy for my pc found!
-
I will check the durametric as soon as I get a chance. The break lights work- I also noticed two other warning lights at lunch, the check engine and a message that said system failure- or something like that (it only flashed for a second). These don't stay on the just beep and flash for a moment. The MAF could be the problem as I have occasional super jerky early morning starts in first gear...
Thanks Loren!

I have a 2003 C2 Cab. No Mods. 40,000 miles.
I started getting warning lights just driving along at any speed. The lights say "Break Distribution Failure" and "ABS Failure" they blink for a second then go off. There is no noticeable change in the breaking. I had new break pads, discs and sensors in the garage ready to put on- so I did that all they way around just in the slim chance it might be a sensor. That didn't help. I have the durametric code reader. Any ideas of what this might be or should I go to a dealer
I have searched around for hours- sorry if this topic is fully covered somewhere I missed! Any help is appreciated!
Thanks!

Did the PST2 or PIWIS say it was setting activating the radio?
Perhaps it would make sense to disconnect the "other devices" and see if the radio works again.
The PST2 never said that it was activating the radio- even with the Gateway 500 set in bypass mode I could never get the radio to work.
The good news is that I just picked it up from Rusnak Porsche in Pasadena- and its working!- the radio- and the Gateway 500!!!- to get them to reset the radio- and enable it to see the cd changer was $150.00.
On the up side I got to poke around on the PST2 for a while so its not such a mystery- I think the software version on it wasn't recent enough to address the TSB. (That or complete operator error on my part) naw- it couldn't be that!
Also- the instructions that came with the Gateway 500 left a little to be desired.
I have my iPod playing in my cdr23! and it only cost about $700.00!!! ouch!
thanks again for your help!
-
Either can be used. You need a PST2 or PIWIS tester and then follow the procedure in TSB 5/02 9120 Activating the CD Radio "Porsche CDR 23" -- dated 10-11-02.
Loren,
First off- thanks for your help.
The TSB procedure didn't work. I tried it for hours. Still no sound and the dreaded "protect" code on the cdr23.
Is my only option is to go to the dealer and open the money spigot? I have two dealers to choose form- Rusnak Porsche in Pasadena- or Porsche of downtown L.A.
Do you think sending the head unit to Becker is an option? Is this problem in the head unit? Could they re-program (reset) it? (I don't like the dealers).
Thanks!

There is a TSB on this...
Yes- I did run into the problem mentioned in this TSB where there was no sound. I will try this fix- thanks! but I fear that may only be half of my problem.
Is there a place I could find instructions to remove the "PROTECT" state of my CDR23 using the (Porsche system tester 2)?
Is there a tool other than the (Porsche system tester 2) that the dealer has that fixes this problem?
I think I have seen you mention a (PIWIS) is that the same thing?
Thanks for your help!

I have a 03-996-cab with a cdr23- I have added a Gateway 500 so I can use an iPod for music- while adding the cd changer to the most system with the Porsche system tester at my mechanic- the battery on the tester died. Now the cdr23 reads "protect"- when the tester is attached it either reads "service" or a radio station. When I remove the tester it reads "protect".
With the Porsche system tester 2 can I fix this problem? If so where in the menus?
Is the Porsche system tester 2 different from a PIWIS?
Please forgive me if this has already been answered- I searched around for hours.
Thanks!
