  1. IPD took a look at the car. He replaced the plenum and the problem has gone away. When installing the plenum he noticed that the hose from the airbox to the throttle body might have been incorrectly seated on the TB. I suspect that this might have been the problem from the beginning but hard to tell now. It was nice to have somebody stand behind their product (IPD) and take the time to help diagnose (at absolutely no cost). It's one mod I would now recommend.
  2. Thanks 355bhp. I did have Bill at Rusnak show me the part. It's the intake plenum. The previous owner must have added it to the car. I don't think I would have purchased the car if I knew it had been modified but it only had 3900 miles and met all the other criteria I had. Dealer sold it to me and represented it as having the factory warranty....with the modification it doesn't really have a complete factory warranty. I'll likely replace it with factory unit. The plenum was from IPD/Mike's Performance. I'm heading to the IPD now to have them take a look...I noticed the area code was the same as mine and they are only 20 minutes away. The part that is causing the problem is a loose hose tht comes off the plenum and returns back to the air box. The hose is loose and the back pressure must be making the noise I'm hearing. more to come. White987s - I did not know there were any mods.
  3. Thnks. Based on the diagram then my intake box is stock. I suspect they are talking about the filter.
  4. Rusnak just called and said it was an aftermarket intake. I bought the car used (about 4k miles) from a dealer and the original owner (my opinion) didn't look like the type of guy that would know how to raise the hood. When I look under the hood I don't see anything that doesn't look stock. Can anybody shed some light on what 'aftermarket intake' means? I will stop by and have them show me later but wanted to get prepared.
  5. I mentioned to Rusnak about the Cats/Muffler but neither of us could think of why it would be both temp and RPM related. My thought was something changes in the heat and the vibration is always there at 2500rpm...you just hear it now because it's changed. I'm not certain I have an oil pump like the 987 but I will mention it anyway.
  6. Update: Dealer spent a few hours on the car on Friday. They can hear the noise but can't find the cause.
  7. My 2007 997S makes a faint ticking or fluttering noise when decelerating. Taking it in to the dealer but I love to use these forums as a second opinion. The noise only occurs when the car is warmed up for awhile and decelerating at around 2500 RPM. I have found that I need to get it above 3500 RPM and let it come back down to 2500 to recreate the noise. The noise goes away around 2k RPM. Sounds like a ticking or the fluttering of a valve. Maybe exhaust leak but the car is not that old with around 20k miles. Can only hear it when the windows are up. Makes no difference if the AC is on or off. Any thoughts?
  8. First comment on 'they nibble on everything': I agree but I think the draw is the wiring. Any others that could comment on what rats like more I would love to hear. My research in this area is always wiring as the complaint and more so on the 997 than others ie:Cayene. As far as 'single out Porsche': just by the nature of this forum I'm making the point about Porsche only. I would hope that Porsche would like to lead the way if there was a fix available. I consider Porsche as an innovator and would hope they would be an earlier adopter of a solution if one was made available. Sounds like others have had the issue. Noise makers are another great approach. I have a friend that tried it but it bothers him he has to keep it plugged into the wall. He suggested a 12v version. I would argue that the Porsche battery needs while parked is already too high and adding a noise maker would just add to another problem. The urine seems to be the most interesting to me but I haven't tried it so I can't comment on the frequency of the application or does it smell. I thought it was synthetic so the smell (like the noise maker) is something I wouldn't notice. Any hunters out there that could comment?

Here is what I have found out so far: Moth Balls, Fabric softner dryer sheets, periodic starting of the car, keeping under the hood clean and checked every other day and my personal favorite....predator urine (fox or bobcat). It was suggested in another forum that you could put fox urine on a small block of wood and just park over it every day. You can buy the urine at hunting stores (somebody suggested WalMart). Still, my issue is "why do manufacturers use materials that attract rodents". Let's assume that there is no other material that can be used in the manufacturing process. Couldn't a repellent be added to the material or to a tape? How many vehicle fires or other safety issues have been caused by rodent damage? I would like to have a car that is better and safer than others so Porsche is a good place to start. I would be interested in any thoughts against a Porsche that repelled rodents ie:maybe it would cost more for a rat proof 997? PS: Insurance would cover this but I'm more concerned about future damage. Looks like rats like Porsches more than the other brands that we have (smile).
  10. No doubt..... but wouldn't it be cool if Porsche incorporated a repellent in the manufacturing process (like in a wiring loom) vs. today a car that attracts rodents.
  11. Update: PNCA called and confirmed that the wiring or harness does contain something "sweet".
  12. Dealer found wiring damage caused by rodents on our 997. It was explained to me, by the Service Advisor, that Porsche uses a coating or material on/in the harness or loom/sleeve that allows for easy installation...kind of like a lubrication so it can be slid easily in and through tight places. I am trying to find out if any others have been told this story: The lubrication or material found in the harness attract rodents. This might not be specific to just Porsches since the auto industry often sources their parts from various manufacturers. I'm thinking it would be pretty easy to add a chemical to the harness/loom that doesn't attract rodents, eliminating the problem and making this a better car. Thoughts welcomed?
