  1. You will need to remove the radio to move the AC controls/cables/wires up to the cupholder position. To remove the radio you will need the removal keys (don't buy them on eBay they charge $10 or more for the keys that are $1.98 from Becker). Tool Pants did a cupholder removal post here also. With the right tools less than an hour to move things around.

    Loren,

Finally started the console delete project this afternoon. Got the old 'cage' removed and as soon as I get the a/c wiring harness moved I can proceed. Is there a trick to getting the wiring harness from below to the upper position? There are 4 connedtors on the harness at the back of the a/c controls unit. These have to go behind the remaining bracket and then get fished up to their new upper location. Maybe a fish cable? Got the radio slid forward to provide more room.

    Help

    Joe

  2. No. That is for the a/c trim that you already have.

    The a/c trim you need is 996 552 677 00 01C. Also need 2 brackets for the a/c display in the new location - 996 573 501 00. Then you will need a storage bin for where the a/c display was - 996 552 243 01 01C.

This guy might be interested in your cupholders.

Actually, I'm going to be doing the console delete so I won't need the storage bin. Taking out the CD holders along with cupholders. Thanks for the tip about the guy maybe wanting the cupholders.

    Thanks,

    Joe

  3. Tool Pants,

The cupholders you have, I call them the pop-out style, were only use for 1 year on the 996. They are easy to remove and move the A/C up above the radio where it should be. The only part you need to buy is the A/C trim. Search on cupholderectomy.

So when I move the A/C up above the Radio will I need the A/C trim part # 996 552 339 00 01C like you posted in another thread?

Thanks Loren and Tool Pants for the useful information. You guys RULE!!

Sounds like a good project while my 996 is sleeping for the winter. While I'm at it I will replace the CDR 220 with the TrafficPro I just got off of eBay. Now I have to get some updated CD's for the TP unit without blowing the budget. Anyone have an up to date Eastern CD they want sell?

    Thanks again

    Joe

  5. From my failing memory, there were 3 Traffic Pros depending on the color of the display. Amber that we use for Porsche. And red or some other color(s). Other than the color of the display they are the same.

Just watch out for something called Traffic Pro II. This was made for Ford and has a green dispay.

    Tool Pants,

Thanks for the reply, the unit I have coming has an amber display. Where's the best place to place the GPS antenna, in the center with the security (blinking light) gizmo? Love that technical jargon.

  6. There are at least 2 on Ebay, I have been looking at them. Here are links.

There are a few models, don't know which one is OEM for Pcars. Also, most seem to have European CD's and I don't know where you get the US version of the CD's.

I saw two separate models on eBay as well and have questions into the sellers. One is from a BMW E38, don't know about the other one yet. Have a question on the Becker board as to compatibility.

Thanks for the help. Will keep at it.

I know that they are single DIN units so they will fit into the dash. I think that most Beckers are Standard in terms of the rear plug-ins for the wiring harness' but don't know for sure. Also, finishes may be different (i.e. satin vs. gloss). Good luck, let me know how it goes if you buy one and install it.

One of the units was installed in a 2003 Buick LeSabre in its prior life. Owner says he upgraded to a more expensive nav system. May just try it and if it doesn't work I'll resell it on eBay.

The kit to remove the console is approximately $120. Here is a link to my installation instructions with pics.

My center console has my heater/ac controls and cd drawers in it. Above on dash console is my radio and cup holders (which I never use). How difficult is it to remove cup holders and remount heater/ac into the void left by it before doing a console delete

  9. So, where is this nice 911 with the key in the ignition?

Just kidding, but I always think of the explanation to the cops or the insurance company "well, I left the key in the ignition....."  Even though I live in a nice low crime area, my car is garaged and alarmed for both house and garage doors, won't leave the keys there.  Growing up in Miami, you see......

Yep, you guessed it...... in the garagePicture004.jpg

  10. Is it normal for the battery to die if a key is left in the ignition?  I left mine in the ignition the other night (In the off position) and when I tried to start it a day later no go.  Battery was dead.  I hooked up my Porsche battery maintainer/charger via the cigarette lighter socket and it charged right up.

Any help here?  What does it do to discharge the battery with the key in it?

And then it won't drain the battery?

    Thanks,

I believe things _were_ turned off so it may be a weak battery. I'm reasonably certain it's now weaker due to discharging the battery.

  13. 996 631 495 00 Rear Light Housing - Left -- Retail $430.40

You can likely get a much better price at Sunset Imports (Porsche Parts at Dealer cost).

Ordered it through porsche-parts-direct.com for $250.89 free shipping. This was their last left tail light, one for the right side would have been over $400, must have been a newer order more in line with the deutsche mark/dollar difference.

    Thanks Loren.
