  1. Got smartTop in the mail today and got it installed in about 20 minutes. Seems to work just fine and hasn't gotten stuck partway like I experienced with remoteTop (with 4-5 tries to make sure it was working). One thing I don't like about it, that I guess it's by design, is that if you start the up process and turn the ignition off, it stops putting the top up. I thought I would be able to pull up to a stop hit the up button and pull the keys out of the ignition and walk away while it continued to do its business. So, I guess I'll have to start the up procedure as I'm pulling up to park so it can be complete by the time I'm ready to pull the keys out and walk away.
  2. Well, I can't tell for sure. I walked to the parts department and picked up my speaker that they got in for me. The parts department was only about 20 meters from where I dropped my car off. Didn't have to do any paperwork for it. So, I'd say 10 secs walking, 20 secs waiting to speak to somebody, 80 secs for him to go back and get it and 10 secs for me to walk back where the guy was already done. So, I'd say about 2 mins.
  3. Took it in today and another guy was working. I had printed this thread out in case I needed it. This other guy had done it before and had it done within a couple of mins. Now I know when it's hot outside! :P
  4. Well, I did about all I could do to it to fix the scratches myself. I tried putting touch up paint in the scratches and then sanding the overflow off but I'd always end up taking more of the paint out of the scratch groove than I wanted. But, the scratches that weren't grooved came out completely using Meguiars Scratch-X. It certainly looks better but still far from perfect.
  5. Yeah, can definitely feel it with my nail. Buffed out as much as I could but its deeper than a buff can solve. I just wanted some knowledge of what's involved in this so the body shop doesn't tell me something that may not be entirely true and me not realizing it.
  6. Yes, they should paint the whole panel. That's what I was afraid of. I wonder if I should get the whole car painted. Over time, it has gathered all sorts of minor scratches and chips due to daily driving. How much would that sort of thing cost? $1k, $2k?, $3k?
  7. Trying to use my car as a pickup truck probably wasn't the best idea... Anyway, before I take it to a body shop to see what they say, do you guys know the extent of work that would need to be done to fix a quarter size scratch (somewhat deep with small indentations) up on the curved part of a door about 1" down from the window? This is on a black 2000 C2 cab. Would they have to paint the entire door or could a small area be fixed and blended together with the existing paint? I don't know how they could get it so perfectly matched since this is in a very visible area right on the rounded top of the door.
  8. Hey, are the LCD instruments soldered on or do they just plug in? Curious as to if I find a mileage LCD if I will be able to just unplug mine from the cluster and plug a replacement in.
  9. Might be helpful if you could post a picture of the problem.
  10. Ok, well the guy at the dealership was thinking there were two kinds of 911's for that year and one of them didn't have the connection for the computer that was needed to do it. I take it there's no truth to this then?
  11. Could you please point me to instructions somewhere? The service tech said that I should print out the instructions and bring them in. The only instructions on the web I could find were for a Boxster and if I bring those in, they'd probably tell me "Oh, sure we could do it on a Boxster, but not your 996". This is what I found before: http://www.brackenrig.net/OBC_Hack.htm If it's the same thing, I'll try to convince them of that.
  12. I went to the dealership today and asked them to turn on my onboard computer on my 2000 C2. The experts had left for the day. But, the people there said they didn't think it could be done. They thought there were two types of 996's and I had one that it couldn't be done on. Can it be done on all or not?
  13. Well, maybe somebody on here would have more info on that. Then I would have no cluster. :( But, I see you have a mileage readout that isn't being put to good use that I could help you out with. ;) Because I didn't know anything about that. I'm taking it into the dealership on Friday to get a couple of new tires put on. I'll ask if they can enable the OBC while I am there and then maybe I can go on and do the singe switch hack that i saw on the web this morning at a later date.
  14. I have some sort of blotch in the mileage readout on my instrument cluster. I hear this sort of thing is somewhat common. Is this something that can be fixed or do I have to replace the entire instrument cluster?
  15. Yeah, I've heard that too. I'll see what the dealer says on Wednesday. But, I will have to agree with Firestone on my rear tires (Pirelli Asimmetrico 265/35-18) though. Took another look at them and they really are in pretty bad shape.
  16. Yeah, I asked the Porsche dealer about the squeal and he said that was normal. Not what I was expecting him to say. They guy at Firestone said that all the breaks were pretty well worn on the inside pads but hardly worn at all on the outside pads.
  17. Update on my brakes: I took my car to Firestone today to see if they can take care of the squeaking brakes. They tell me I need new pads and rotors and it is going to run me $1700 (plus $800 for the two bald tires in back that I didn't know I had - only bald in the middle of the tires). They told me that $1700 is about $700 cheaper than if I would take it to a Porsche dealership to get it done. So I called the Porsche dealership and talked to the manager there. He said that in the last 5 years he hasn't had to replace one set of rotors. Said it just really isn't done on a car like mine very often at all. I told him that Firestone said that rotors were grooved and he replied "so what?". He also said that he could do a full set of pads and rotors on a Cayman for cheaper than $1700. He told me to bring the car in for a free brake inspection on Wednesday afternoon. So, I'm going to do that. Oh, I checked out the rear tires too. The things are just like Firestone said. They've got deep tread towars the outside but near bald in the middle. That's not the type of thing that you can see very easily without raising the car up. I put my hand across the tire to feel it and once I got towards the middle, there was hardly any tread at all. This caused by them being overinflated maybe?
  18. How 'bout that -- an instant "Half-off Sale"!!! Imagine what their profit margin is at the "regular price". Good job scoring the lower price... and good on ya for contributing! Yeah, thanks to you for listing what Suncoast would sell them for (plus, they were showing me the screen that has MSRP of $60 and their price of $120 next to it).
  19. Went to the dealership today. The guy there was about clueless on finding those speakers. So, I pulled up your post and got the part numbers from it. The dealership had them priced at $120 each but he let me have them for $60 a piece. Got them on order now.
  20. I bought a PET CD-ROM on eBay a while back. Well worth the approx $20. That's how I found the part numbers. I got the price the old-fashioned way by calling the man. As an aside, you've received a fair amount of assistance the last few weeks from this site. Might it not be time to contribute? I see. Thanks for the help. I did contribute this morning but it hasn't marked me as a contributing member yet.
  21. I called them today and I'm just going to send my remoteTop back and get it replaced with the smartTop. Yeah, the tech support guy I talked to was nice and I told him the problems that I was having. I think I'll be better off with the smartTop anyways because I wasn't too kean on how the remoteTop actually operated when it was working. If I didn't hold the keyless button down long enough, it just locked the doors, then when I pressed it again and held it down to do the hood, it saw the door was unlocked and tried to put the hood up. Kind of a pain to sort that out when you can't tell exactly what state your car is in since you are not in it.
  22. Thanks for the reply. So, I have to buy the speakers too, huh? Not too happy about that. How did you find those at Suncoast? I couldn't find them there. I found the speakers listed over at pcars with your parts number. I tried searching there earlier but had no idea what they were since they don't have pictures or detailed descriptions of those items.
  23. Sorry, I really tried to find the parts myself but I haven't had any luck (I never do it seems). I need the parts for both right and left speaker grills for a 2000 996 C2 Cabriolet (black); mine have holes in both of them. I couldn't find it on any schematic at Pelican Parts or by searching Google. Can somebody point me in the right direction, please?
