  1. I have an '01 Boxster S with 55,000 miles on the clock. Two issues, I'm not sure if they're related. The last couple of days at idle speed, I hear a whine/sqealing sound from the engine as if pulley bearings or a belt is slipping. Doesn't happen all the time and not at all if the revs are over 1500. Also, the last few days at morning start-up a huge amount of dense black smoke comes out the exhaust. After a minute or so the exhaust is normal again. There doesn't seem to be any loss in performance. Thoughts. Are the 2 related or just coincidental? Is the dense smoke a signal that there is serious engine problems

  2. I have an '01 Boxster S with 50,000 miles on the clock. My clutch is slipping in all gears starting at 2000 revs. Is there any adjustment on the Boxster clutch? Is 50,000 miles the average lifespan on the clutch? Other than routine maintenance, I've had nothing done to the baby and am shakin' in my boots at the prospect of visiting my local Porsche dealer with a repair issue. What might I expect as a reasonable estimate on the cost of such a repair? Thanks to all

  3. I misunderstood your post in the other thread - sorry.

Anyhow, the M680 amp should work as long as you also hookup the DSP controller which necessitates an extra wiring harness be run from the amp back thru the firewall to the DSP controller in the center console. That's more than a fair amount of work to do for the results.....

When upgrading amps from the 4x40 to 6x40 (or just replacing) you need to make sure you get an amp w/ the same architecture as the existing... M490 or M680 (DSP).

    Good Luck :)

Any idea what the part # for the extra wiring harness would be?

  4. I have an '01 Boxster S with the M490 sound option (ie CDR220 H/U, HAES 4x40W amp) and I have recently added OEM rear speakers. I also have purchased an HAES 6x40W DSP amplifier and DSP faceplate that fits into the center stack. My question is this, if I cut the alignment keys off of the connector and plug my system into the new amp will it work and do I need to use the center stack DSP faceplate as well. Thanking all you stereo guys in advance

  5. Once you get the wiring to the rear of the radio from the rear speaker kit you connect the wires to a brown plug that mates to the radio. Once the pins are inserted they are difficult to remove. If you later need to go from the radio to your new 6 channel amp, a harness is used that also mates with the brown plug and allows enough wire to make it to the trunk. Harvey sells the long extension harness that goes from the radio to the AMP. I paid $25 to get one from him. I have short ones that can be used if you have not yet inserted pins into the brown plug or you have a pin removal tool like Tool Pants suggests.

    Maurice-

The brown plug is the connector piece between the rear speaker wiring harness plug (which usually connects to the back of the head unit) to the extension wires. The extension wires run to the front trunk amp. If you didn't get one w/ your kit, call Harvey and he'll send you one. Good luck! :)

Thanks for clearing that up for me!

    Regards, Maurice.

I too have an HAES 6x40 amp but mine is a DSP which I assume means digital . Iwant to replace the stock 4x40 amp in my Boxster S with the new amp. Ialso have recently done the rear speaker to the H/U install. My H/U is a CDR220. Will the new 6x40 amp work with my system, plug-n-playwise if I cut the keys off the connectors? Thanks for all your help

  6. Hi all,

My radio has been acting up for a while(switching on and off by itself). I sort of ignored it cus I could tab the amplifier a few times to bring it back to life.

It became so bad, it kept switching on and off even I locked the car.

Well, the result was it drained the battery and my car was dead.

Battery has to be replaced by a new one. It has been over five years, so it is about time anyway.

The parts and labor for replacing the amp is $850! Well, thanks but no thanks.

I asked them to pull the fuse for the radio and amp before they install the new battery.

Just curious, where exactly is the fuse?

If I decide to install the amp myself, what special tools I need? Do I need the radio code?If so, where can I get the code?

    Thanks!

I have an HAES amplfier 6x40W p/n 996.645.322.00. Might this be what you're looking for?

  7. Thanks for the info...had a look at the dash speaker and it seems fine...don't think the door speaker is the problem as it doesn't seem to cut in and out. Any chancw its an amplfier problem?

I would pull the HU and check the wiring harness as well. It's easy enough to do. You may find a loose connection. If the connections at the dash speakers are good and the doors aren't cutting out then the only other connection points are the HU and the amp. You can pull out the wiring harness behind the HU pretty easily.

Is it the stock head unit?

Yes, stock H/U...CDR220. Ihave pulled out the H/U and replaced it with one I bought on ebay...both exhibit the same issue. Also, had a look at the amp and all the connections seem fine. Goint to keep my eyes open for an amp on ebay. Who knows!!

  8. to access the dash, yes it's just removal of 2 torx screws

to access the door speakers, you need to remove the interior door panel. I'm going from memory, but it includes removing the following AFTER YOU DISCONNECT THE NEGATIVE TERMINAL ON BATTERY (since you are working near the airbag)....

    - rear view mirror sail panel

    - cover over top of door pull

    - torx screw located under cover above

    - c clip in door grab bar

    - torx screw under clip above

    - plastic cover that says 'airbag' on it (w/ fish line or carefully w/ a screwdriver

    - allen screw under cover above

    - plastic philips screw inside door pocket w/ anchor

Then you can pop the 8 or so trim plugs attached to the door panel holding it to the door. Specific directions can be found in Andy_M's guide in the DIY section on upgrading the Boxsters sound system or you can get it from the Boxster Wiki Here

  9. I have the m490 option sound system in an '01 boxster s (dash and door speakers). The right front speaker(s) cut in and out, but not completely. Seems to me that the high or mid-range speaker(s) cut out but the low or bass speaker(s) don't. Can't tell if its the door speaker or dash speaker. I want to check the connections at the speaker and see how to access the dash speakers (2 torx screws) but I don't know how to access the door speakers. Any assistance would be greatly appreciated
