Your 981 engine is very different from the early Boxsters. The good news is design is such that you do not have oil tubes.

The bad news is that your leak is likely elsewhere.

Thank you Loren for the quick reply.

I have an appointment at the dealer this Tuesday, guess I'll find out then.

I'm doing an edit. Found out that the smell is normal on the 981 and other models.  There are no leaks that I can see.  My 986 had a similar smell and that lead me to believe I had a leak.

Any recommendations for a service manual for the 981 Boxster?  I've seen a few links for online downloads.

    Thanks again,

    Keith

  2. Have to replace my pirelli Nero rears at short notice, thinking of Michelin ps2 for the rear only and keeping the pirelli Nero on the front, until I have to replace them too

I've only had pirelli on my Boxster ... Rossi and Nero .I've had some"manufacturers deformities " with the pirelli's

And may need to make a change

    Any feed back is welcomed!

I drive her every other day but love to her lose in the mountains

    Peace

I've had the ps2's for 3 years(2002 Boxster s), and love them. Over the years on other vehicles I've never regret putting Michelin's on them. But when I've tried other makers, at first I'm in love with the tire. Then about it's half life I'm like this tire, umm, sucks.

I noticed you had problems with your Pirelli's. I'm sure you liked them at first but after a while..., problems. That's my point, works great at first, then degrades to a somewhat satisfactory performance that you can live with but not liking it.

I've never experienced that with a Michelin tire. I loved them in the end as much as I did in the beginning. My everyday driver is a Ford 2008 Expedition, stock with Pirelli's, after 30,000 replaced with Michelin's and a world of difference.

Ps2's all the way. All though they may not be the best on snow, yikes! I had to drive a few blocks this year

  3. Hello everyone,

I've been searching through all of the posts to see if I can figure out a vibration that I have on my 02 Boxster S. At first I thought it was a bad front engine mount but the problem is that the vibration does not go way if I let the car roll in neutral. I usually let the car coast when I am pulling off of the highway (average speed is 65 mph). The vibration stays the same.

I am beginning to think that the problem is with the real wheel bearings. Does anyone have any info on diagnosing a bad rear wheel bearing and replacing them?

I did not find too much on the net about this so if I do the work I want to take pictures and post it up here for others as well.

The vibration sounds like it is very much dependent on the speed of the car and not on RPMs - when I let the car coast in neutral I still get the same noise.

    Anyone have any other suggestions?

    Thanks!

Believe it or not you may be able to diagnose it by hand. You'll need to get both back wheels off the ground for this. If a bearing is making that much vibration you should be able to feel it in your finger. You'll need to compare one side with the other. And if both bearings are bad, well, umm, comparison won't work.

With one hand rotate the wheel in it's normal forward direction, and with the other hand, place your finger on the spring around the shock. Compare one side with the other to determine which bearing is bad. Obviously the side with the most vibration (singing) has the bad bearing. This worked for me on my 2002 Boxster S. You can move your finger around like a stethoscope and see what you can find or feel.

On my car, I thought it was the tires at first, it needed new ones. So I put on tires (Ps2's), and well it was better for a bit (200 miles) then the vibration came back. Which turned out to be the passenger rear bearing.

    Good Luck!

  4. I just ordered the Enthusiast Package, wahoo!! :D

I changed out the battery and now have an "Airbag Failure" light. The night before I ran the passenger seat all the way forward to vacuum under the seat. So not sure what triggered the light. If somehow by running the seat forward I broke a wire or if it had to due with disconnecting the battery.

The wire harness that runs under the driver's side seat (left side for U.S.) with the large connector for the seat belt/airbag connections is long enough to allow you to unbolt the seat and place the seat next to the car without unplugging the harness. So, I doubt that is what caused it, unless you accidentally pinched a wire by pushing the seat all the way forward.

    Regards, Maurice.

I didn't force (or push) anything, both seats are electric and adjusted them that way. I'm just tracing my steps as to what I did before I got the airbag failure light. I'm thinking it had to do with replacing the battery.

Either it'll reset with the software or I'll get a code if something needs to be replaced. I noticed that the wires for the buckles are raped rather tight around the edge of the seat frame. Which over time I would think could create a possible problem of chaffing of the wires by movement or vibrations. Hopefully I can clear the fault and all will be good.

It's a 2002 Boxster S. Been a great car, I have 59,000 miles on her. This is the first fault I've had, so no complaints.

Many thanks for the info Maurice, I'll keep you posted as to what happens.

    Cheers,

    Keith

Took about 2 minutes to hook up cable and open software and clear the airbag fault. So far I'm impressed with Durametric Diagnostics and half of it's paid for already by avoiding going to the dealer. :D

  7. I mounted my V-1 on the passengers visor and then used a remote head and put it by the front left speaker. It's easy to see any alerts with your peripheral vision.

With the top up or down drivers behind you can not see the remote. Also, no tape was needed to hold the remote in place, it just sits secure in its place.

    Here's a pic.

I don't think the V1 works the same if you take it apart and separate all the sensors. It's programmed to help you decide where the signal is coming from based on the strength of signals it is picking up from the front and rear sensors. When the distance between the two sensors goes from 3 inches to 10 feet, at different heights, it's not going to be able to analyze the signals the same way. I'm sure it will still "work" but it's not going to be as accurate.

I thought about a bunch of different ways to mount it, and I finally decided just sticking it to the windshield about 3 inches below the rearview mirror and left or right of the antenna whenever I was using it gave me the best experience. I only use it on the interstates and long drives. It takes 15 seconds to stick it up and plug it in, and comes down with a one handed motion in no time.

I didn't take it apart. The remote head can be purchased for your V1 for 50 bucks, and it allows you to relocate the signal indicator of your V1. Just plug and go.

Also, it's illegal in the state I live in to attach or suspend anything from the windshield. So I clipped the V1 on the passenger visor.

  8. I replaced my RMS, IMS and clutch at 52K. Left the flywheel alone. Cost is $400 +. It looked in excellent shape. No oil from RMS leak, took a caliper and checked for wear. I figured I would catch it next time I did the clutch at 100Kor so.

That's what I hope to do with mine and change it on the next clutch change but will have a better idea when it gets torn into.

I believe Porsche recommends changing the flywheel but as you mentioned if the specs are ok and looks good then run it a wee longer.

    Thanks for the information!

    Cheers,

    Keith

  9. LOL, figures I just had the oil changed. And yes, I used the recommended weight of 0w40. I'll give a heavier weight a try and see what happens. I live in Minneapolis, MN and don't take the car out unless it's 50's or above.

    Thanks Maurice

    Cheers,

    Keith

    Keith:

One of the people who did this and documented that his leak had completely stopped is Pedro on PPBB.com. Do a search on PPBB or send him an e-mail through PPBB, he's very helpful and very knowledgeable.

He's in Florida, but if you don't take the car out unless it's 50 or above you might give it serious consideration.

I'll give it a try and see what happens. I appreciate the information.

    Many Thanks,

    Keith

A side benefit might be that you will extend the life of your clutch as you should be reducing the chance that the pressure plate will get contaminated with oil.

    Regards, Maurice.

  10. Porsche approved and coded tyres have a rotation direction and/or inside-outside indication and can not be rotated left/right, beside that the front and rear tyres have different dimensions and can not be rotated front-rear as well.

That is why I was wondering if side to side is ok. I know front to back is out of the question but on an inside-outside tire would it hurt to rotate side to side? I suppose another thing is the tire is now turning the opposite direction in a side to side rotation.

  11. I had the same thing a few years back on my 2002 boxster S. I thought it needed new tires and it did. However, it was the right back wheel bearing going out.

I'm running Ps2, only 5000 miles on them and had them rotated today. Any pros and cons if rotation side to side is worth it or not?

    Thanks,

  13. Chris/Loren,

Do you know if the CDR23 will work in the 2000 Boxster? What is different about this radio and the standard radio the fits in the 2000 boxster?

Here's another idea by Kenwood for a single Din especially if you want to have a navigation system on board. I saw this at Best Buy and they're on clearance now, if you can find it in stock.

I have a the Bose system in my 2002, sounds decent but thought about updating the radio and adding navigation. The unit also has DVD, something I would never plan on using. I'm not sure how compatible it would be with the Bose system, otherwise I would do it. Not sure if it's worth using the bose amp or if I should put in a new one.

Crutchfield has a package including navigation for 1100.00 bucks. That's the second link. Also, on the Crutchfield website you can determine if a radio is compatible for your car. Or one that would fit without to much modification.

    Good luck!
