  1. SHADINESS ALERT!!! To anyone considering an extended auto warranty: This industry is apparently as slimy and dubious as the used car sales industry. Go in with your super-skeptical guns drawn, maybe blazing. I'm all but certain that the warranty I bought two days ago from Continental Warranty is a cleverly crafted scam. While it was advertised to me as an extension of the original Porsche bumper-to-bumper warranty (my car's got 72K miles on it), I believe it's really just component coverage. Worst of all, there's 81 complaints against the company filed on www.ripoffreport.com and 250+ others at the Los Angeles BBB, which is more than enough in and of itself to avoid it like the Black Plague. This goes beyond shady, my Renntech friends. Beyond shady. [Dramatic soundtrack plays in background] Now I'm waiting for a call from one of their shady reps so I can cancel the policy and, um, get my $400 deposit back. I paid using USAA and they're rabid when it comes to fraudulent companies, so I'm hoping for a relatively smooth resolution.
  2. Thanks for the warnings. I'll comb the contract when I have it in a few days, but I just did speak with a rep at Continental and he reinforced that most warranties (including mine) do not cover emissions.
  3. Alright...there's a apparently a debate on facelifts and I'd like to hear some of your input on it if I can. Basically there's a 996-purist argument that warns that resale value will plummet if a 996 is modified to look like a 997. However, there's the other side that argues that the 997 is more of a classic look and might help sustain the value of the car. My preference is the 02+ 996 look.
  4. That's not very nice. I'm new to Porsche and I was curious as to what people said they had when talking to other people. :( I'm mostly kidding, but I am ever so slightly concerned about the resilient popularity of this thread.
  5. The best thread I've seen was "What's the dumbest accessory you ever bought for your Porsche?" It was hilarious. But this has to be the worst one. How can this many of you care what to say when someone asks what kind of car you drive? The last time someone asked me what kind of car I drive I was in high school during the 90s. And I certainly wasn't driving a Porsche. Are there that many Renntech members in high school?
  6. Just curious how a $4K 2-yr warranty for 30K miles with deductible is "better" than a $2,400 4-yr warranty for 48K miles with no deductible. What am I missing?
  7. I just purchased an apparently terrific bumper-to-bumper warranty for my 72K-mile '01 C2, covering me for 4 years or up to an odometer reading of 120K miles with no deductible for $3,800 from Great American Insurance (brokered by Continental Warranty). A legitimate extension of the original manufacturer's warranty at my mileage sounds a little too good to be true, so fortunately Florida guarantees 60 days to review the policy, in which worst case I would [ostensibly] get my $400 down payment back (I'm doing a 24-month, no-interest payment plan). Does any of this sound a little fishy to anyone???
  8. This is all I could find on the "facelift:" "This is without a doubt the cheaper alternative to buying the 997 and consists of an entirely new A) front spoiler bumper, B) two fenders with a racing fuel tank cap, plus an original Porsche parts kit including C) complete lighting units and D) headlamps (for vehicles with or without Litronic ). At first sight, it is not possible to tell the 996 apart from the 997. The conversion kit is available from HAMANN for the 996 series models Carrera, GT3, Carrera 4S as well as the Turbo and GT2." Is Hamann UK the only one who does this? They charge around 2,200 brit pounds ($4,400). Is this what you were talking about fastboydave?
  9. You've convinced me! I'm going to join the Club, and appreciate the benefit of your descriptions... especially the one that says I'll wonder why I didn't join sooner. I like it!
  10. One member wrote me the following and I thought it could be useful to anyone else interested in the cost of this type of conversion: "Here is the price if you buy it on ebay or used Porsche part store: - '02+ headlights: $1500 - '02+ GT3 front bumper: $1000 (hard to find at this price) - new fenders ($400 each) - new headlight mounting brackets: ($300 with all the nuts and bolts, dealers only) Paint & Install will cost $2000. You have to blend the color with the hood and doors." All this adds up to roughly $6K, which is much more than I care to spend on any aesthetic upgrade (...for a car I just bought). I'll keep it on the back burner, however, in case I ever find some extraordinary deals on these components. I appreciate everyone's input on this... it's an attractive modification for older 996s.
  11. Great point and I'm glad you brought it up. Though, I wonder how the fender could make a difference? I guess I don't understand specifically what the "fender" part would be...I'm pretty new to the DIY world. Thanks.
  12. First, there is a hole for a peg, which may very well just be a screw. Second, are you a naval aviator (re: avatar)? Third, if you are, might you recognize the bird on my rear window? Mine bounces in the wind as well, but I figured it's just 'cause one side is detached. If someone can identify the brand, I'll be grateful, since I can go directly to them for the pieces. Thanks.
  13. I'll definitely be selling these at some point and will give you the option before eBaying them.
  14. I love my '01 996, but the '02+ nose and headlights are unquestionably sleeker and more attractive to me. My present headlights are yellowing and the laminate eroding anyway, so I figure I might replace the headlights and the nose with the newer style of both. I'll probably buy the components on eBay and have someone other than Hoehn do the installation. Does anyone have any experience with this? Thanks.
  15. Thanks, Loren! Super-descriptive thread...But I think it's for a different issue. My problem isn't replacing the spoiler trim (aka "rubber accordion"); it's replacing the left "peg" that attaches the the after-market spoiler to the car. I don't believe the linked threat addresses this.
  16. Can anyone tell me why someone would join PCA? I've gone to the site several times to find out what it does for its members, and I can't tell if it's substantially more than a college fraternity (without all the regret). Please share the merits of the membership.
  17. The left side of my spoiler recently detached from the grill. Now, I've tried five different adhesives (silicon, gorilla glue, crazy glue, aircraft epoxy, auto epoxy) and it's come undone every time. I still can't believe aircraft epoxy didn't work. Anyway, the spot I'm gluing is looking worse every time, so I'm over adhesives as a solution. This amateur has been making amateur mistakes. I'm ready to learn to do it right. It looks like there's a plastic peg that connects the other side (which has fortunately been strong enough at speed for the past couple of months). I thank you in advance.
  18. I got the car with this spoiler already installed, but it's definitely one of my favorites; it's clean, unobtrusive and understated. I'm one of those people who abhors whale tales, and I love anti-whale tale spoilers. I do have one complaint for it, though: The left side of the spoiler has recently detached from the car. How do I fix this? It looks like there's a plastic peg that connects the other side (which has fortunately been strong enough at speed for the past couple of months). Thank you in advance.
  19. I bought my '01 C2 two months ago; odometer reads 71K miles, but the engine was replaced under warranty at 46K (engine's at 25K right now). Loving it...what should I expect to pay for my 25K service?
  20. Can someone tell me why I'm paying $0.20 more per gallon for 91 than I would for 87? Right now, it feels like a gas-company propagated superstition and I feel like a sheep by not really knowing the empirical difference.
  21. I'm not even a little pissed about that one, cause the color's fine...it must have been the lighting around the time I took the photo outside. I'm around plenty of P-enthusiasts who probably would have brought it up even if I wasn't very sensitive to the subtlety of a color difference. Thanks for your constructive help on this thread. I'm surpised you think that the color is fine, as it is not. Many of the Artic Silver cars came with the front bumper improperly painted. Right color, but layed down in the wrong direction. Mine came that way and dealer had to repaint before deliverly. As far as the leather goes, saturate the seat with mink oil like you would a baseball glove. Let it sit for a day. Rub it in real well and wipe clean using a good leather conditioner. I guess you're right, although I sincerely can't tell the difference, except in that photograph. It's probably among the last on my list of things to do. If the nose was painted beige, it would be closer to my top 5. Thanks for the tip, though. Kind of a silly factory oversight for Porsche! I'd even be surprised if KIA let that slide.
  22. Nice call on the side markers, toddel! I've never even seen them until you pointed them out, and now they're like cold sores on the lips of my 996. Eeew! Any other quick fixes you can suggest?

  24. Silver 2001 C2 Coupe 6 speed with black interior in Fresno area here with a select list of 4 minor gripes after owning the car for exactly 30 days. If you have experience with any of these issues, I'd be grateful to hear about your solutions. Disclaimer: These are minor problems and overall I'm thrilled with this spectacular machine...but, as with anything, there's always room for special improvements: 1) No gas gun ever let's my car fill up! I have to spend 3 minutes "massaging" the trigger to release gas into the tank until it invariably spills over. Why do these guns think the tank's full when it's barely half way there? 2) The internals of my doors make a rattling noise to vibrations, especially the stereo's lows. Are there professionals who specialize in silencing this rattling? 3) Passenger seat leather is hardened. How did this happen to one seat, while the other (the important one, thank god) remained plush? 4) I don't smoke and sometimes it pisses me off that there's a vestigial ashtray in my car. Has anyone else modified that space for anything useful? Thanks for your expertise in advance!
