  1. Mine says service reset, but seems to still bring up the service screen when i turn on the car hmmmmm.

    I just gritted my teeth and got a Durametric. Maybe I can convince my fiance she needs a Cayman instead of a 350Z, so I can make it more of a value :)

    The Durametric has done everything I needed (check engine codes, clear service reminder, and check my 0-60, 1/4mi, and 0-100-0 times. You know, the serious stuff.).

  2. Also - bought a CDC4 of fleabay - looks like new (thank god) plugged in and worked after swithching the PCM on/off a few times. But on the SW Version Screen there is a "!" even thought the unit works perfectly.

    I am quite sure that adding a CDC will require reprogramming of the PCM. I'm sure it will take a PIWIS or PST2 to get it on and happy if your vehicle is not configured to use a CDC as it stands. I did two searches using PCM CDC and add CDC4 CDC6 as search terms, and not a lot turned up (that weren't threads by me! hah) that would clear up your questions.

    A quick call to a dealership asking "Do I need to reprogram my PCM to add a CDC? My VIN number is xxxxxxxxxxxxxx" should solve all your questions.

I've had a few cars with disc brakes over the years, and the standard feeling was if there is a significant groove in the rotor from pad wearing, that you should replace the rotors (instead of turning them or leaving them). The dealership said that mine looked fine, and just replaced the pads. My concern is...

    Does the PCM tell me when the rotors get too thin, or is that something I should watch myself? I know there is a recommended schedule for brake service (I brake too hard too often anyway to follow it), but i'd rather be careful that stupid.

  4. Just as a point of reference (a month late, I know)... I have an OBDII and a durametric now. OBDII works on all cars I've tried it on so far, but can't really do much. Just to see engine codes and a few other minor data stats. Durametric is Porsche only, and limited on the number of cars you can use it on, but it works extremely well to get information, see codes non-emission related, and I have used it to reset my service warning successfully on an 04 CTT.

    OBDII has a lot of software out there, and can be logged and used usefully to diagnose a lot of problems. However, the Durametric is better suited if you only plan on using it for the Porsche.

    Worst case scenario, buy a cheap OBDII reader (should get one around $40 or cheaper), and see if you like what it can do. If not, the durametric is the way to go, and you'll have a reader to second guess mechanic work on your other car(s).

  5. 3ball, buy a Garmin. Much easier. And portable.

    If I wanted cheap and easy, I'd have bought a Ford Edge :)

    I know I'm doing it the hard way, but I hope to make it actually function and not just a waste of console space. I'm half tempted to just sell the PCM and buy a working system and custom fit it. We'll see just how ugly this gets before I get irritated enough to use a 3G cell connection uplink to the internet for realtime maps...

  6. Short answer: no. Not for CDs, ever again. Sorry.

    Long answer:

    The map database they produce has been migrated to a DVD standard (more maps fit on 1 optical disk, so no swapping out). As such, the database is HUGE and cannot be broken back down into regions without the original code or someone with a serious dedication to a reverse engineering project (personally, I'd estimate 500 hours of work to rip it up and relink it, and that's possibly way underestimated).

    I was working on this for about a month before I decided it just seriously wasn't worth it, even as a hobby. I'm looking into the PCM swap now.

    Good news is, if you do the PCM swap, you can sell your old one to recoup some of the cost of the new one.

  7. I drive a 04 Cayenne turbo, and am pretty pissed off I can't get the updated maps. Mad enough actually to buy whatever DVD version of the PCM I can find and put it in. Obviously I'll need dealership help regarding the PIWIS to get the new system accepted. I spoke with a fairly knowledgeable technician who said the DVD system is under the passenger seat, whereas the CD system is a slot-loading part on the PCM, and the wiring was different enough he told me I'd be better off selling the 04 and buying an 05 with one.

    Is this even possible to move from a CD system to a DVD system? Cost is somewhat of an issue; I won't pay over 2500 unless it's done by a team of gymnastic midgets (for entertainment purposes. I'd want my money's worth).

    The deal is, I can't break the maps up. The relational database is already compiled, and reworking the database without Navteq's help would be a full time job for several weeks. So as it stands, I can update maps from OTHER CDs to the Porsche format (I think, still haven't tested, but the format doesn't look different), but at this time NO DVD TO CD map conversions.

    If anyone spots an updated cd map version from navteq on ebay (any manufacturer), I'll buy it and see what I can do. Newer maps than 2004 = best.

    I have stalled out with new DVD information, and I'm not crazy about paying almost retail for a new set...

    porsche navteq:

    Search returned 0 results.

    Unfortunately, I will want as close to the porsche standard design for the data. If someone were to extract the map data for me from the BMW/Audi etc CDs though... that'd help a lot. To do that basically, you'd compare two versions of the same model CDs, and find the maps. I'll try again by cross referencing two of their CDs; maybe I can figure out how to rip just the maps. I'll keep you guys informed; I have some spare time this weekend, and I'd *really* like to get this working before I leave for the beach next month!

  10. So now Porsche says that I can't buy just the blade, I have to get the whole fob/blade. Does anyone know what the average price is for it? The quoted me $225 plus 1/2 hour labour for programming.............. sound about right??

    Good News: That's actually about $75-150 cheaper than I would have expected.

    Bad News: when an ebay search turns up ZERO entries for a Cayenne key or blade... looks like you're paying the $250 or so.

    Programming the RFID requires hardware you probably aren't interested in buying, but I'd ask someone here to confirm the PIWIS/PST2 would be needed. It's been a while since I looked at getting a second key.

  11. 1,2 - I can't help you, I have a model year 2004, but it could be similar. Push map button, and zoom in/out using the right knob to see your current location and path to destination. The calculated path is orange on my display.

    3. You can't, as far as I know. I guess in theory you could make a tin-foil pocket for the key... it would block the RFID transmitter. I'm not sure how the system would respond to a key just "appearing" inside the car though. It may trigger the security system, or it may just do nothing.

    4. Again, don't have this option, so no real advice, but one way to check is have someone stand behind and point at the camera and continuously close in until you find it, and see if it has an adjustable housing (i.e. not a hard plastic case with a fixed mount point - which is very likely)

    5. every 50,000 miles for a turbo, but I'd check your included maintenance schedule to be sure.

  12. I have not noticed this and it's sounds like your dealer is feeding you a line of BS. Ask to take another Cayenne of the same year from their lot for drive and see if it acts the same way. There is a TSB issued on a ignition coil problem(V6 only?) but I believe it also triggers a check engine light when the problem occurs.

    wvicary - thanks for your response. Can you advise, what gear is your vehicle usually in when you are travelling at 50-60 km/h?

    My 2004 Turbo is in 5th or 6th gear at 60 also, and when i punch it there's around a 2 second delay before it drops to 3rd gear. What wvicary suggested is definitely your best bet. If you get the same feeling with another Cayenne, then you might have a legitimate issue. If it feels similiar (especially if it's a newer model), you're just noticing a nuance in the design.

    -edit: I should mention it's in 5th gear in "normal" mode, and 6th in "comfort"

  13. 1. is there any reason we should hesitate on getting a 2004 CS? I have read many posts on the forum and nothing jumps out at me.

    2. silly question, but this one has the crappy Bose sound system, with the subwoofer in the back under what looks like a compact spare tire cover. the sales manager told us not all Cayennes came with spares. there is a bottle of fix-a-flat gel in the back.

    I bought a 2004 Cayenne Turbo in June of 2007 for $52,000 with 38k miles. Make sure you are getting a solid deal. Even ebay auctions are cheaper than what you would think - a quick search will bring up a lot more than than just this one, but it was the first I opened.

    2004 Cayenne S, with 37k miles, buy it now under 32k

    Realize that you'll need additional shipping (under $1000 is common and reasonable), ebay charges (what is it now, 3%?), but overall only you can tell what the better deal is going to end up for you.

    1. Electrical problems are frequent in 2004 and earlier models. Also keep in mind the navigation CDs are dated and no longer updated (but I'm working on that). Make SURE the navigation CDs are included with the car when you buy them; they're $300 for a new set, and navigation will not function without them. If it has a CD changer, make SURE the CD magazine is in the changer (the removable part that holds the CDs).

    2. I have seen 2 other Cayennes without spare tires in the spare tire well; both had an extra battery in there because accessories just kill the stock battery setup in hours. I've left my ipod connected overnight and gotten a dead battery. As far as whether they come with/without a spare, I don't have the data to back it up.

  14. Not really a matter of the "newest" dvd, as much as it is a problem of "can i do it at all?" I'm already bidding on an older set of Navteq DVDs on ebay, due up Sunday evening. I figure hey, if I can get it working for $50 in parts, I'd be willing to buy a new set to push the maps. Otherwise, I feel like my money spent on a new set would be a foolish investment.

    I'll keep you informed though, if this DVD to CD conversion works, I'll certainly be hitting you up :)

  15. I went with the Cleansweep, and added amps. All works fine, and no hiss or whine from the engine.

    Looks like a solid audio solution! I'm still holding out for the m0bridge for the car-puter option. Already bought the mac mini which just happens to fit perfectly. The nice part about the m0bridge is the video feed to the in-dash display. I'm a geek, and have no problem admitting i want a computer onboard...

    U0006-0060-210 (CD Pkg 2002-1)

    Good news though!

    I was able to successfully create an ISO9660 standard image, and swap the maps from North America (Southeast) and North America (Northeast)!

    It took 3 attempts; there's some unmarked sectors on the CDs which declare it the format useable for the system. This is an observed speculation, since creating a straight image from the CD works, but merely formatting in the same setup and adding files creates a frisbee. My My next step is to find another CD set to attempt to update.

    If anyone has the DVD navigation system, I'd love to have some information regarding the file names and sizes on the DVD so I can see if it's worth buying to update the CD set.

  17. Eh, I've got the CDs, that's not the problem. The problem is I drive around on roads that don't exist 4 years ago :)

    If I have a GPS system in the car, last thing I want to do is buy *another* GPS system... but you're right, TomTom is $$$.

    I'm going to work a bit more on it tonight, and see about patching the files. Does anyone have a more recent nav CD/DVD than 2004, that would be willing to upload the map files? I might be able to frankenstein the files in. I'd like to try, anyway.

  18. I emailed Navteq about getting an updated map set for my 2004 Cayenne with CD nav system, and I got the response

    "There are no map updates"

    So, I'm assuming I'm screwed for new maps. Talk about regressing to the stone age; I'm half tempted to rip the system out and just put something functional in. I heard the m0bridge unit will allow for video feed from a carpc :)

    My question is: are there any known solutions for updating the Navteq mapset?

    I have imaged my CD, and looked at the base fileset; I'll run a bit more deeper shortly. So far, there's a propriatary setup but I was able to alter the files listed in order, and even managed to change which mapfiles existed. However, I think Navteq moved to DVD format the next model year, and those files are likely too big to be on a CD.

  19. Did anyone ever get an answer or resolve related radio issues? Mine continues to drop out as I described above, head acts normally but doesn't make a sound, and all audio settings revert to zero. Turning the radio and/or car off, removing key, etc., doesn't help, and it will be ok after it has been off and parked for a while. It happens very infrequently but is annoying as hell.

    My V-6 is at the dealer, they are still messing with it, unsuccessfully, and my warranty ends in just a few days, so I was hoping to get it addressed.

    Since you have the problem documented while still under warranty, doesn't that require them to resolve the issue, even if it continues out of warranty? Assuming you never close the issue fully with them...

    What do you mean by Sport Setting? I wasn't aware of any sport mode on these cars, there is a sport suspension mode, right? Thanks~ Mark

    I believe the newer models do have a proper "sport" button.

    For older models, "PCM off" provides a similar experience, at least in terms of transmission shift points, etc.

    Yes, the sport suspension mode. Oh, and I tried the "PCM OFF" button. Good lord, what a difference! I bet it shaved a half second off the 0-60 time. Going to try the runs again next month, with PCM off. The vehicle behaves much more wild with it disabled, that's for sure. Almost to the point of recklessness... think I'll nickname it the "no longer civil" mode button. Or the "scare the bejeesus out of my passengers" button. Turbo spool time is about the same, but the raw V8 power shows up more.
