  1. I used oil I got from the Porsche dealer. It was actually Audi oil, 75-90W. I think there are all kinds of opinions on what kind of oil to use. On our Boxster there are two rear suspension struts to remove and an AL under panel. Then one needs a 17mm allen socket an a special socket for the drain. The socket for the drain is a sixteen square ... I bought both off ebay for like $14 dollars each. I made a special pump using shop air pressure limited to 25psi, clear tubing and an old water bottle.   2. I just did our '98 Boxster at 53Kmiles. Seems to shift better esp in the cold. It's a pain to do so really be ready to do it and study up. If you can get the car up high enough it can be done on jack-stands.
  3. Check this out http://www.renntech.org/forums/index.php?a...code=diy_optima . I agree about Porsche batteries not being great. We had problems with out '02 Carrera. I just replaced the battery and called the 1-800 number. They asked me to send them a letter with copies of the bill. In several weeks I got a check for the full amount. Check around and you'll see plenty of stuff on batteries.
  4. Assumed you were going for a GT3 look. They are only in the way without the seats.
  5. Is a new cap covered under the warranty ? Is there a TSB on this ? I just checked and both of our P-cars have the 00. Sure would be nice to ge Porsche to pay for one of them.
  6. Bubble wrap the front end. Should be able to pick-up a few yards at an office products store such as Post-Nets. Possible reuse of b-w as packing material.
  7. There was a change to the transmissions and flex shafts in '98. The best thing to do is the change things out. I'm sure there is a tech pub on the change. It was covered in the elctronic manual I have for the Boxster. The change involves replacing the transmissions, mounts for the transmissions and the flex shafts. I think Porsche only sells the new flex shafts as replacements. The parts cost about 1K$'s US.
  8. RT, I had the front of my 996 recently done for about 400$'s. the guy I used was from just West of Denver and does work for the dealers. I would use him again. Let me know and I'll find the contact info. Joe ps get the back of the mirrors done too...
  9. While you are at the hardware you might look for a tool called an easy out. It's like a drill bit except it threads in backwards so as you are tightening it into the opening it is applying torque to remove the busted screw or plug in this case. When removing a busted bolt you first drill a hole for the easy out to go into. If you can find the right size easy out it might be easier than hammering a bit in. Joe
  10. Check the oil filler cap and the fule filler cap. Also, hope you have a stock air filer not a K&N. Joe
  11. If this is a Boxster I hope you have not installed a K&N air filter. They really mess up MAFs on Boxsters. Joe
  12. I thought the standard Porsche thing was 4 psi difference front to back. That's why I went with the 36/40. I wonder if this is still too high. Given the Boxster experience think something like 34/38 might be worth a try. On our Boxster I use 32/36 cold and 32-34/36-38 hot at the track. Lower pressures seem to give more grip and less slide.   13. What presures are being used for road driving ? The 36/44 recommended by Porsche seems high. I am now using 36/40 and wonder if I should be more like 34/38. Joe
  14. Steve, Check the Porsche Web page for Porsche Certified Cars nationwide or in your area. It's a 6 year 100Kmile warranty. I just purchased an '02 Carrera with 6kmiles in almost perfect condition. '02 or newer have most hp and a bit stiffer body. Joee
