  1. Well.. it turns out to be an easy fix. Went to Sears and pickup the female torx bits (E16 - E6) for $19.95. E6 is the one you need. (looks like Sears is the only store has it). Here is how I did it. - use an erasable market to mark the upper edge window position with the glass closed - lower the window (otherwise you can't reach the skrew) - the hole is under the door. pop the plastic cover (the one on the edge of the door, opposite of the hinge) - I could lower the window about 1mmfor every full turn (counter clockwise) test drive, hit a few bumps and try again until you are happy with it. Remember, if you lower the glass window too much, you get wind noise because of the gap. I didn't try the 5mm socket. It probably would work.
  2. ha... I really hope so.. The review said 997 transmission is far better than previous versions. 30% shorter shift and smooth. I am saving my lunch money now..
  3. Thanks guy. The car is in Rector for the A/C now but I will definitely ask your friend to look at it. It's sad that they cant fix the trans. Looks like the only way is to replace the whole thing which is expensive. Perhaps the new 997, if I can convince myself.
  4. I actually tease at my friend Markus in German all the time. He is cool. I am ok with both systems. Loren, I am playing with the buttons, Monday should be Metric or should it be English..
  5. Thanks guys. I finally found the female torx at Sears for $19.99 + the driver for $9.99. Not even Kragen carries them. The workshop manual actually has the instructions for adjusting the window height and pressure against the door seal (in and out). I will try it when I get my daemon back from Rector. will post the result. Seems easy without opening the door panel from the workshop manual.
  6. Somehow I just don't have enough trust for Rector or Carlson. The last one ripped me off $7K for the alarm control unit, two mirrors and a clutch, saying the 2rd gear problem was the clutch. Thanks Bretto..That put them on my never-deal-with-again list. This 1999 C2 seems to be my on-going nightmare. Thinking of trading it for the 997 S perhaps later. Need a recommendation of any porsche mechanics that can take a look at the transmission. thanks!
  7. Good advice. I think I will tell Rector to leave it alone. for $3000, I probably can find an used transmission instead.
  8. Well.. my 1999's second gear is getting harder to engage. So I bought it in the Rector's but they told me it will be $3000 to open it and parts are separate items. Hard to swallow.. does anyone know the Porsche's waranty about this transmission stuff.. I know most of the car has great coverage about things like this (I never have to worry anything about my M5 etc.) I am new to the P car..
  9. Loren Do you know Porsche's policy for this issue? The trannie is expensive.
  10. I simply have to pull the shift back hard to get my 2nd gear in. Otherwise it will spring back when I press the gas pedal. I changed the clutch, doesn't seem to be the clutch problem. From 3rd to 6th, it's very smooth. Do I have to adjust the shift cable or I need to have the transmission checked?
  11. There is a pin that locks the fuel door. When I push the remote, I can hear the actuator doing something but the pin is not moving. Somehow I have to take it out and perhaps replace it. Question is, how can I get to it without removing the front left fender? I heard some had problem even reaching it from the wheel house Need help
  12. Loren Are you sure you didn't work for Porsche before? :) thanks
  13. Ok.. this is weird.. when I was trying to replace the ignition switch, I disconnected the fuse (#1 in Row 2) and killed the power supply to the cluster (and the door gongs when the door is open). after everything was done. reconnected the fuse and everything seems fine except now the cluster showing numbers in German KM/H instead of our MPH. No that I don't like it, I probably will have problem explaining to DMV next time. Any easy way to fix it? Non-documented buttons to push like the A/C display etc. Need help...
  14. Wurth Rubber Care Gel Stick works. It kills most of the sqeaks. I am still waiting for the female Torx tools I ordered but the Gel stick actually works. Cost $10 bucks.
  15. My 996 A/C is not functioning correctly (blowing hot air in a sunny day). I opened up the passenger side sensor cover and nothing is in there. From the workshop, this part seems to be 996-653-241-00. Does any one have experience replacing it. Where can I find one for a reasonable price? Thanks
  16. I probably will try both.. using the gel and adjusting the regulator. The picture provided by guru is quite clear. I couldn't tell what it is from the shop manual. Thanks guys!! This is a great site. With all the helps, you think I should pop in a turbo engine for my next project? :D god speed.
  17. Guys here is another one I am fixing now/at least I am trying to fix My driver side door window squeak, I traced any possible clues and looked at the work shop manual. on 57-6 Page 4. It has a few sentenses describing how to adjust the door window height etc. The window glass is rubbing against the door seal when I hit a bump. Quite unpleasant sound. It was caused by my last visit when the dealer tried to fix my power window. I searched through the door (opened it and also looked under the 4 holes under the door. I couldn't figure out how to adjust the window height like the manual described. Anyone knows how to do this. It should be a simple fix.. I just need to find which screws. The manual says "Adjust the uppper limit stops of the drivers by screwing the Torx screw T30) in or out with socket E6 in or against the direction of travel. (ha.. ) ... also accessible throught 2 holes at the bottom of the door.
  18. Thanks guys.. I finally bought the workshop CD from eBay. Found out there are a few sensors for controlling the A/C. Outside sensor, blower outlet, interior sensor, Sun sensor. quiet a few to check. Is there anything similar to OBD-2 software/tester to quickly find out what's going wrong?
  19. Replacing the outside and inside sensors seems like reasonable. The control unit may still be good. The temperature reading on the instrument panel doesn't seem right. Must be the outside temperature sensor then. OK.. where the this little guy?
  20. I wonder anyone has experience of fixing this. Say the weather is hot. my 1999 996's outside temperature reading says 62F (of course not) and my automatic A/C is blowing hot air. The only way to override it is the set the A/C temperature setting to LO. Is this an easy fix? Really don't want to go back to the dealer that charged me $7k last time. Foster City, CA Peter
