  1. Just found out that I have a leak in this part as well.  Took it to an indy shop that quoted $1200 in labor to replace the part, which I thought sounded pretty high until I read these posts (getting a broken 987 part fixed is usually never cheap).  Interesting that the part doesn't show up in online parts diagrams or my 06 Cayman shop manual - guess they never expected it to fail?

    Anyway, thanks to those posting their experiences above!

  2. Has anyone done this yet on a 2011+? The calipers are significantly different from the typical Porsche Brembo calipers in that they don't have the single retaining pin on the top of the caliper - and the pads can't be removed from the top of the caliper. I'm not sure of the function of the 2 torx bolts facing outwards, but it appears to me that you can't replace the pads without removing the calipers . . .

  3. There were issues with Durametric v.5 and 987s resetting the Service reminder, because, I was told, the reset signal had to be sent in a very short window (on the order of a few milliseconds) for it to go through. Many people using slow laptops or not running them on A/C power, had issues with it not working.

    As far as I know, there have been no problems using Durametric v.6 (current) and resetting the Service Reminder.

  4. In Auto mode, the tiptronic will almost always start out in 2nd gear (it will sometimes kick-down to 1st if you are on an incline, or hard on the throttle). If you are at a stop, and put it into Manual mode, then it will start in 1st gear.

    I have always assumed that it starts in 2nd to help with fuel economy, smoother starts, and preventing wheel spin on slippery surfaces.

  5. Help! The PCM on my 2011 Cayenne is driving me crazy. I can't get it to store any of the radio or satellite stations on the Presets. I have followed the procedure for storing them initially (assigning stations to preset buttons), but whenever I stop and restart the car, they are lost. Is there something I'm missing, or is there a problem with my unit?

    Very strange, have you tried a factory reset.

    No, I considered it but was holding out to see if someone could explain what I might be doing wrong. A member on Rennlist pointed out that I need to save Presets to my seat memory button whenever I program them; I don't think I've done that yet, so I'll try that first to see if it corrects the issue.

  6. Can you tell us in what way the cat was damaged? Was the substrate broken/missing or was it melted, and if so, what caused the damaged to the cat? I'm very surprised you didn't get a cat convertor efficiency code.

    I'm not sure of the specifics, other than there was visible damage of some of the cat element. Some of the early 06 Caymans had cat problems, and in fact, my original left sided cat had to be replaced about 2 years ago when it went bad.

    I think this one did throw a cat efficiency code on 1 or 2 occasions, but only after running at high rpms, and not consistently. In retrospect, my service adviser mentioned that if they have another car come in with a similar problem, the cats will probably be one of the first things they look at, rather than the last.

  7. Great news. Do you know how they were able to isolate it to the cat.?

    It was pretty much by the process of elimination - after doing various things like switching sensors, coil packs, actuators, etc. from one side to the other, they had reached the point where they thought that it might come down to replacing the DME, or actually having to replace the whole engine (Porsche was apparently recommending that it might be necessary to replace the engine, rather than tear it down to look for a mechanical problem)! They finally decided to take a look at the cats directly by removing the headers, and that's when they noticed that the right side was partly bad. Replacing it cured the problem.

  8. **UPDATE**

    Problem solved - after 5 1/2 weeks in the dealer's service dept! It turns out that the problem was the right side primary cat was partially bad. It wasn't bad enough to cause a problem or throw a code under normal driving conditions, but under high load/flow (i.e. variocam range) it was apparently obstructing the exhaust flow enough to affect the valves on the right bank, and cause the lifter and misfire codes. Both headers/cats replaced under the 8 yr/80K mile Emissions Warranty - I am a happy camper again. :thumbup:

  9. I assume you cleared the codes to see if they would come back?

    I did - however it only seems to return under a combination of lateral g-load and high revs; cruising around town it is fine. I wondered if it might be due to faulty coil packs, so I replaced them all, along with new spark plugs. Even with that, I got a misfire code on cylinder 3 today when I tried to reproduce the condition on a freeway cloverleaf ramp. I'm off to the track tomorrow to see what happens. If it recurs, then I'll be taking it into the dealer on Monday to have them look at it.

  10. . . . Several cylinders may be stored as faulty, although only 1 valve on one cylinder is faulty.

    In order to guarantee safety during repairs, the flat-base tappets of the inlet valves of the entire cylinder bank should be replaced if a fault occurs. . .

    That sounds a bit ominous - I was hoping maybe it was just a faulty sensor or something. I hope this is covered under my (non-Porsche) extended warranty . . .

I have a 2006 Cayman S Tiptronic with 43K miles; recently it has been throwing the CEL codes shown in the picture below, but it seems to occur only when I am pulling a fairly high-G or sustained right hand turn and RPMs go above 4000 rpms (i.e. on the track). As the codes show, it only involves the bank 1 cylinders (which I believe are on the right in a Cayman). I don't seem to be able to reproduce it by normal driving around town, or acceleration above 4000 rpms in a straight line. The other day, I also got some misfire codes for cylinders 1-3, under the same circumstances (sorry, didn't get a screen cap). I do not notice any change in the way the motor runs (certainly no stuck lifter sounds or rough idling,etc.). I just changed the oil again, and that didn't seem to help. I am planning to replace the spark plugs this week, though I doubt that it would be related to that.

    Does anyone have any suggestions as to what might be causing this, and/or why it only occurs on exiting hi-G right hand turns?

  12. I'd like to have a performance alignment done to my Cayman S. Does anyone have recommended specs? I'll be using the car for AX, track, and street driving (but not daily driver).

    The most camber you can get on the stock suspension w/o mods is about -1.0 on the front and -1.75 on the rear, which is not a bad compromise for street/track/AX. To get the max negative camber on the fronts, you have to push the strut mounting bolts all the way inboard in their slots.

    Like you, I wanted a compromise for street and track, so I went for near zero toe on the fronts (0.04 toe-in) and slight toe-in on the rears (0.08) and as much caster as possible. If you are really competitive in AX, then you might want a touch of toe-out on the fronts, but it will make the car wander more on the highway.

  13. I have a 2006 tiptronic cayman s. It currently has 1600 miles on it. The dealer told me the oil needs to be changed every 2500 miles. This seems a little excessive. Is this correct?

    Every 2500 miles is certainly not correct - however, it should also be changed at 2 years regardless of the mileage. If you have a 2006, you should start getting the maintenance reminder on the dash before too long.

    Anyone know what the 'N2' stands for?

    The N designation indicates they are approved by Porsche, N2 means they are the 3rd generation of SO2s approved (after N0 and N1). If the link above doesn't work for you, try the article on Tire Rack:

    It might be helpful to check the date codes also, to make sure the tires aren't more than a couple of years old.

  15. Started up for the Spring, and had CEL light. Porsche advised CEL would go away after (3) driving sessions of over 20minutes. During the first driving session, the CEL flashed and beeped once every 20 minutes. Called Porsche, they came and towed Cayman away for service! Only 2400 kms!!! Engine was running rough in the 1500 to 2500 RPM range, but ran smooth over 3000 RPM, but chugged with a slight rocking feeling during idle...appeared to be misfiring, but I'm not an expert. Anyone with CAT conv. problems on a 2006 Cayman S?

    I had a CAT CEL on my 06 CS a couple of months ago (don't remember the specific code off-hand). The service dept. had to replace the left side header cat. From my observation, there have been sporadic reports of Cat problems on 06's.

    However, I don't remember it affecting the engine at all (in fact, I still drove the car for a few days while waiting for the replacement Cat to come in). If you are getting some engine misfiring, I'm not sure that would be related to a cat problem.

  16. Not heard this issue before.

    Don't forget, a flashing CEL is very severe. And you should pull over (to a safe location) immediately, turn off the engine, and call Porsche Roadside Assistance.

    Hmm... a flashing CEL and no stored faults?

    Methinks he erased them.

    I'm aware that a flashing CEL is serious, but the odd thing was that it only flashed for a few seconds and then stopped - and when I did pull over (almost immediately) there was no CEL (flashing or otherwise).

    I did use my Durametric program to check for any fault codes before I had it towed to the dealer - to my surprise there weren't any - and I certainly wouldn't have erased them myself under the circumstances. Or, are you implying that the Service Tech might have erased them?

  17. My 06 Cayman S with nearly 20K miles recently experienced a valve lifter problem. It started this past weekend when the engine seemed to misfire, then the CEL started flashing for a few seconds and went away. After a few hundred yards, the same thing happened again. When I pulled to a stop, the engine was idling roughly, and there was a very loud "ticka, ticka, ticka, . . ." sound present (however, there was no CEL).

    I got the car to my local dealer, and the Porsche tech initially diagnosed it as a valve lifter problem when he heard it on arrival. However, they didn't get around to putting it on the PIWIS until today, and when he checked it today, the problem is now gone (and the PIWIS didn't show any stored faults).

    Since my car was just under 20k miles, the service department initially tried to blame it on my oil being dirty - until I informed them that I had changed the oil and filter (to specs) 3000 miles ago. I decided to have them go ahead and change the oil again, so they couldn't blame it on the oil if it recurred; they did strain my oil when they drained it, and didn't find any metal or particles.

    They are having one of their service techs test drive it tonight and tomorrow to see if the problem recurs, and if not, then they will return the car to me. Apparently the PCNA tech advisor told them not to tear down the engine if the problem seems to have gone away (their reasoning is that if it were a mechanical defect, it would still be present).

    Anybody familiar with similar issue previously in other models, or opinions on how the service department is handling this?

  18. If you are talking about adding the whole package, including the dash top clock, I don't think it is possible (or at least it would be prohibitively expensive).

    However, you can get the Sport mode functionality with the Snap-Flash DME reprogramming by Softronic and some people are adding a Sport mode button with that as well (plus you get a few extra HP to boot :) ).
