  1. Hello everyone,

i like to run in trackdays with my boxster s my03, but last week for three times in the same corner, a left

curve that i run in third gear with full open gas, for some seconds i can feel no power on my engine and i can see a lot of white smoke on the rear,

also the engine check light on. When i close the gas the smoke ends, check engine light off and the engine start to work normally.

after these three laps where i have the problem, all going well and i've finished the track session without problems.

Anyone has experienced this problem or have idea of what can be the cause?

    Thanks a lot

I'm wondering if you ever figured this out. It does sound to me like an oil mist separator. You said you checked it out. For me, the way I confirmed this issue with my track-dedicated '04 986S was to see the inside of the intake. However, I experienced it everytime I pushed hard through the same left hander - so I had more oil visible in the intake - if you've only had it once, you may not have as much to see.

Your symptoms match an overwhelmed separator - the CEL and sluggishness is caused by the oil temporarily fouling the plugs. If you do a code read, I bet you will see a misfire in cylinder 5 and 6.

I've had this exact same problem on the track, as has a buddy of mine with an identical 986. Both of us are upgrading to the PMNA separator. Mine was delivered last week. It is about twice the size of the stock one. Hope to install before my next trip to Barber in Sept, which is one of the tracks where I get this issue.

  2. Sorry to keep annoying you Zeb !

I got to point 4 on the front sway bars - i.e. bent down the metal bracket etc. But for the life of me I couldn't remove the old bushing and u-bracket, it just wouldn't budge. Any tips on removing it ?

I just replaced my front and rear sway bars and bushings with bigger H&Rs. On my front (an '04 986S), there where two metal braces that made a "V" shape with the pointy end of the V toward the front and covering the bar in the middle. I had to remove those two bolts AND loosen the two on the other end of the braces some to get everything to wiggle out. I'm sure you have already disconnected the sway bar ends from the drop links.

Further, to get to the bolts in the back of these braces, I had to remove some of clips on the front plastic cover to be able to bend it down some and get my wrench in.

With the drop links disconnected, the braces well clear, and the bolts out of the U shaped bushing holders on boths sides, it should come out - maybe with a little aggression, but it shouldn't be too hard.

BTW, I did not grease my bushings - teflon fabric or some such thing on the inside.

  3. I have an '04 986S dedicated track car. I recently started having this oil ingestion problem on the track.

I have a buddy that has an identical car, and he has had the same issue in the same sort of turns - for both of us it would happen as we were back on the throttle hard on the exit of a left hand hairpin coming after a high speed straight. He was having his race shop install the PMNA part. I recently ordered it, and will give it a go on my car before my next event in August. Note the race shop said the 986 does not have the secondary air injector pump in the way like the Caymans do.

I got my part of Suncoast in Sarasota for $400 and change.

  4. I installed a Stebro racing exhaust in Dec 07 with secondary cat bypass pipes in my 04 986S - a dedicated track car.

I have four track days on it after making this change, and got a check engine light today for the first time while driving it around leisurely to warm up prior to an oil change. The code is P0340, Catalytic Converter Conversion Too Low (Cylinders 4 - 6).

I do not know if the new exhaust is related to the code, but it is suspicious. Even if it is not, and it is a bad cat, should I care? The car does not have to pass emissions tests. If a cat is bad, versus the mod somehow causing it, am I doing any long term damage to the engine if I don't replace the cat? Am I doing any damage either way?
