  1. Could be ignition switch broken. A lot of times mechanics not familiar with car can torque the key to hard and break it. Try wiggling the key (more counter clockwise) and see if the offending systems recover.

The plastic piece can be found on ebay and Autozone online. Do a search here for part number. it runs from $14-30 depending on source. Can be a DIY replace (instructions also on this site)

    Good luck

  2. With my 99 C2 I found that the headlight plugs were loose. This affected all the lights in strange ways. You can check this by removing the headlights then reaching into the fender. See if the plug is loose in it's holder. There should be a sliding clip that keeps it in place. On mine this clip was not engaged.

The only other easy item is maybe a faulty ign. switch. But since it is just that one light then probably not.

  3. 1. This thread has trim part number http://www.renntech.org/forums/index.php?s...2;ac+trim\

    2. I found another post somewhere that mentioned a cross member was between (horizontil to divide the two dins vertically) the two Din slots and was easily cutout. This is fairly common in most vehicles.

Have you gone and played with the different Nav units? That is the one thing holding me back. So far I find most of them to have very cheesy feel. To the point that I am now thinking of doing the mini PC mod. Or keep the Alpine 9856 and add a Parrot BT for phone and a Alpine 422i cable for my iPod.

One unit I have not tried is the combo Alpine w205 with blackbird. That seems interesting since it allows you to take the GPS with you to other cars. It has full iPod control but no HD to rip cd's too.

  4. I am getting my new to me MY99 C2 (non PCM but aftermarket Alpine 9856) on Monday and have been thinking the same idea. After having done a ton of research I have found the following.

    1. The AC controls will easily move down with a $7 trim piece from Suncoast.

    2. Some cutting will be needed in the Double Din area if it was a car that had no nav.

I am not sure about the Bose infacing or if you loose any functions remove the PCM.

Do you have a iPod? If so why look at the units that rip to HD? Just get an iPod controllable unit.

Good luck and let us know what unit you picked.

  5. In my search for "the one" some interior carpets are showing some fade. This of course gets the wife turned off. For the life of me I cannot find replacement carpet for 1999-2002 996 cars. I looked at Sunset site, googled it etc. Are 996 carpets listed differently? I have also looked by searching 1999 911.

Also are the lower carpeted parts of the door replaceable easily? since that is where she notices it most.

    Thanks,

    Ben

  6. Thanks guys for all the input.

    1. PPI......YES! Saw that advice numerously here.

    2. Car is for both of us. It will be mostly my good day commuter (sharing good days with my Ducati that is) What major maintance differances between coupe and cab? Other then obvious top motor and parts. are 4+ cycles of the top a day overkill?

    3. JohnJ I am sorry to hear about your problems. What was the failure? From this board it seems that the main issue is RMS or inter. shaft seals failing and letting oil run low. What are the other major issues? Those seals were visably inspected 5 miles ago (FW replacement) and found to be dry.

    4. Some known options so far are Aero2 wing, 2pc 18" wheels, Litronic Headlights, 3-spoke steering, full leather, heated seats, LSD (is this an option and how common)

    5. Dealer seems to be a well established ind. Dealing in mostly highend vehicles.

    6. I am in MA will correct profile.

I have seen some C4's slightly above my range. What are the frontend maintance like on those? Is it a worthwhile move to that?

    Thanks for all the input

  7. Great info here guys. I am shopping for a 99-01 996.

    My budget is upto 30k.

I have found 99 coupes with milage in the 40k-70k to be in that budget. Mostly are dealer trades with limited history notes.

One in particular is a 99 silver ext with red int. C2 coupe. It has 42k miles on clock. The dealer didn't felt some vibration so had the clutch and flywheel checked by a Porche ind. shop. Clutch had plenty of meat left but they stuck a new stock FW in it. Now fine. The shop said the RMS was dry also. The only other known issue is they is a slight vertical crease near the edge of the hood about 1.5" long. Looks like someone had left something in the channel when closing. Carfax shows a minor accident in the rear at 32k miles. 2 owners 1st was a lease 2nd college kid that only drove 10k miles for 5 yrs he had it.

    Dealer is firm at $26k

What milage should I be looking at for this budget? Is the maintance different bigtime between C2 and C4? Wife thinks she want CAB. What should I be looking for in these?

Thanks for the help! Hoping to be an owner in two weeks!
