  1. I have a 99 C2 with Tip. On two occasions the Tip lights were flashing. If I remember correctly you couldn't use the Tip function, shifts were a bit rough and it wouldn't shift into 5th gear. I visited the local dealer and the took it in and reset it for free. They commented that it could have been caused by a low state of battery charge. The next time it happened I put my code reader on it, it showed a code and was able to reset it. It hasn't happened since but I make sure I keep a battery tender on it when I'm not using the car very much. Good luck with the problem.
  2. Thanks Loren. I had the front end off the ground this AM and went through everything. Checked all the mounting points including prying them a bit with a very large screw driver. I checked the tightness of the upper strut mounts and they are OK. Also checked the sway bar mounts and they seem solid. I did have a recent problem with the sway bar mounts on my wife's Benz. The bushings seemed ok but they would groan every time you went over a bump. I may take a second look at the mounts on the Porsche. This has got me stumped and I don't necessarily want to start chasing it with new parts. Thanks again for all of your excellent work on this site.
  3. My 99 C2 Cab has had an intermittent clunk in the right front suspension since I got it (3 years). Usually happens when I am backing out of my driveway and one wheel drops over the curb before the other. I've been reading up on the problem here and finally decided to replace the strut top bearing over the winter. While the strut was out I also checked the sway bar link, tie rod and lower ball joint. All seemed tight. When I first drove the car I thought I'd fixed it but the noise came back when I was doing a tight U-turn. I'm not a happy camper. Back to the garage today and see if I can find the source. Any thoughts on how I might proceed with chasing this issue would be appreciated. Cheers
  4. No, but it makes the oil change a bit cleaner. I've found that sometimes oil will collect in the skid plate and then drain out if the vehicle is parked on an incline. I always take mine off as it only takes few minutes.
  5. The previous posters have given most of the details. In Alberta I didn't have to do the bi-lingual labels - I guess we are far enough from Quebec! My experience in early 2008 bringing my 99 Cab was fairly straight forward. Had the local Cdn Tire do the inspection and paid the local Porsche dealer $37 to change the climate control from F to C. That was about it. Good luck. This from the RIV on salvage vehicles: Salvage vehicles are vehicles that have been damaged beyond economical repair due to collision, natural disaster, accident, trespass or other occurrence as determined by a licensing authority or a licensed insurance provider. All U.S. brand information on imported vehicles is acquired by RIV as part of the registration process. Vehicles in this category will have U.S. titles indicating the salvage status or brand. This information is verified by RIV through U.S. databases, and the salvage brand will be made available to all provincial and territorial licensing jurisdictions in Canada through the Interprovincial Records Exchange (IRE). A salvage status on a vehicle may severely limit your ability to get the vehicle licensed and insured in Canada. You should contact your jurisdictional licensing authority for more information. Salvage or rebuilt salvage vehicles can be licensed in Canada provided the original damage was not flood-related and the vehicle is admissible under Transport Canada's List of Vehicles Admissible from the United States. All licensing jurisdictions in Canada require a second rigorous structural integrity inspection for U.S. salvage vehicles to verify that the necessary repairs have been done to make the vehicle road safe. Salvage or rebuilt salvage vehicles can also be imported into Canada as parts-only vehicles through a Vehicle Imported for Parts Form Form 3 regardless of the source of the damage. However, once a vehicle has entered Canada on Form 3, it can never be licensed in Canada.
  6. Very cool. I know you have also seen the guy in the middle east who is doing the same in a 996 Turbo on the LS site. It's good to see your car on its wheels. More details please!
  7. I had the same issue with my 99 Cab. It looked kind of goofy with the nose higher than the tail. I ordered a set of rear springs from Sunset (about $125 IIRC). Be sure to get springs with the correct color code. When I had the old springs out I compared them to the new ones and there didn't look to be any difference but once installed, the car sits level. There is a thread about measuring ride height in here and I used the specs and directions provided to find out mine was sagging. Try the search function. Cheers, Scott
  8. Suggest you do as the BostonC4 said and get a battery tender. Starting it up occasionally is actually not great unless you bring the engine up to full temp for a while. If you don't warm it up fully you'll likely start to see evidence of the milky condensation crud that builds up on the oil filler tube.
  9. Have you gone on Rennlist to ask the same question? They also have a very active community and if you indicate your location there may be someone there that can refer you.
  10. I believe you are mistaken as the 996 is not an aluminum frame. There are some aluminum body panels attached to the frame but the actual unibody is steel. Good luck with the repairs.
  11. You might want to give Competition Motors in Belleville a call (no affiliation). They are listed on the L&N site as an authorized installer and I've heard they have a fairly good reputation with Porsche motors. Cheers, Scott
  12. I bought a 99 C2 Cab with low miles (28K) 2-1/2 years ago. The car was and still is in exceptional condition and I have had no problems with it - just normal oil/filter changes, tires (which were noisy), etc. Do as Loren says and get a PPI done on the car. There have been cars that have had issues but there are also a lot of them out there working perfectly. They are a blast to own and drive and at that price you can't go too far wrong. It makes me want to go out and get another one!
  13. Sorry for the delay in response. PN i have for the mirrors only is 996-731-903-01-01C. I got them from Sunset in 08 and they were $58.72 each. Good luck with the fix. It's pretty easy once you pull the visors off their stalks. There is a thread here somewhere on popping the mirrors out. Cheers
  14. Do yourself a huge favour and order new mirrors from Sunset. I tried to fix mine and it was a waste of time as the fix lasted for a little while and came apart again.
  15. Just tried it and it worked like a charm. Many thanks Loren. I really appreciate this forum. Not a lot of idle chatter and drivel - just straight answers to the questions.
  16. Thanks Loren. I'll give it a try when I get home tonight.
  17. Just went out for a drive and when I pushed the window switch momentarily to do the auto-down function and it didn't work. The window will go up and down if you hold it. Any thoughts what might have gone wrong? Is the auto-down function contained in the switch or is it part of a window controller module? Oh BTW it is a 99 Carrera Cab. Any help would be greatly appreciated. Cheers
  18. You will have to get the crushed lines replaced fully. The lines are aluminum and I don't believe they are repairable. Do you know if the system isn't working because the lines are crushed or because the lines have a hole in them and the refrigerant has escaped? It is likely that if they have a hole in them you will see some refrigerant oil leaking at the point where the hole is. If you are going to attempt the repair by yourself you should take it to an auto A/C shop and have them capture the refrigerant in the system. Then you can go ahead and replace the lines, take it back to the A/C shop, they will pressure test the system, evacuate it with a vacuum pump (this is a critical step as it eliminates air and moisture from the system and you will never get it working properly without doing it) and fill the system with the correct quantity of R134a. Good luck with the fix. Cheers
  19. Tough to say as automatic transmissions are not an area I'm knowledgeable on. Just as a thought check out the 996 Forum on Rennlist for a thread from 06/18/2010 titled Tip Assistance. It details one owners issue that turned out to be something totally different.
  20. Oklahoma Foreign lists a 99 tip with 50k miles on it for $3000. Have you spoken to any local indy shops in your area for advise? They may be able to assist. I have no personal experience with Vertex but know they have been selling Porsche stuff for a long time. I have a 99 tip and if I had an issue I would probably go that route. Good luck with this issue.
  21. I think the popular opinion is that with stock rim width (7 & 9) you can go to a 225 front and a 275 rear. I was considering doing this until I purchased a set of 18's Check out Tire Rack as the spec section gives a rim width range for each tire size and you can also talk to their customer service guys. They are pretty knowledgeable.
  22. This happened to me about 2 years ago. I was driving it pretty hard on some mountain roads (followed very closely by a guy from my office in a Maserati Spyder). The light came on and stayed on (flashing) but the temperature never moved. I watched the gauge for a while and kept my eye in the mirror for any signs of a leak (i.e. the guy in the Maser turning on his wipers!). After a while I had a chance to pull over and stop. I shut the engine off and restarted it immediately. The light didn't come on and I haven't had a repeat of the incident. My theory (as a sh*thouse engineer) is there may have been a bit of air in the system that got dislodged by the high rpm's and high cornering forces. It found its way back to the tank and caused the sensor to activate.
  23. I just installed one on my 99 C2 Cab/Tip. The installation was dead simple and once together there were no leaks or any issues. I did it because I always struggled to get the canister off. This should make it a lot easier and cheaper to do the oil change. I ordered the deluxe kit that came with the magnetic drain plug. Good luck
  24. My pleasure. If you have any other issues just post and I'll do what I can to assist.
