I am an OEM guy only, so my advise is Porsche factory parts, especially when it comes to the body. May cost more but the quality and fit is always right on.. IMHO...

Ok, I don't really know where else to post this. Does anyone know if there are any shops in the Los Angeles or San Diego area that stock performance parts for 996's? Specifically, I would like to pick up a cat delete or high flow cat x-pipe and a cold air intake... Maybe a short shifter. This is kind of last minute and I won't be able to install the parts myself again for a bit, so I was hoping to be able to just pick them up and go to work. I haven't been able to find a thing. Thanks!

You can buy OEM side skirts for the MK1 right from Porsche. Sunset in the US..

Nick, I will try to get some pictures tomorrow to post. Not sure what color your car is but---You may want to change your order to the black chrome because it is outstanding. It is not really black but blackened chrome-hard to describe-but I was extremely impressed and glad I did not get the other. They do look great..

I just replaced mine with the Fabspeed duel pipe. I must say I was very impressed with the quality of the Fabspeed product. Make sure you order the correct ones for your year car as the MK1's are shorter than the MK2.
Taking the old ones off was very easy but you do want to jack up the car for more working room. Putting the Fabspeeds on was not that easy because they (the dual pipe ones) fill up more of the opening and it is a little tighter to work. I also, put painters tape around the exhaust opening on the bumper so I did not scratch the paint when working in that area. Also, adjusting the tips takes time, at least for me, becuase I wanted them perfect.
All in all, it was an easy job. Just take your time. And afterward---well they look great..

You do not have to drill any holes to install the MK1 side skirts. There are small retaining clips that clip onto the lip under the vehicle (~10 per side I forget). The side skirts are taped on the top along the vehicle and screwed into the retaining clips that are under the vehicle. There are also two screws in the back wheel wheel and one in the front. Do not use glue and do not drill holes. PM me if you want.

After the bodywork gets done (don't ask) and that loser tuner :angry: of mine finishes my freakin swap (lost ECU programming when I changed my battery).
My self and another unfortunate member here are going to release the full dossier on Mr. Fabian Roock in the very near future. He is a street urchin and should be run out of the Porsche business. B)
You have pictures of your car with your body kit? People still ask me about my white coupe. I loved that car.
I think if I buy a Turbo I would leave it alone. Mods are a slippery slope that I don't want to go down again......... 415 hp is fine
Just left the shop.. Removed sideskirts and front bumper to repaint with the right color--I got the paint values from a Porsche dealer for Glazier White so it should be perfect this time. Wing is prepped and waiting paint. Then I will send you some pictures.. Sorry about your problems. Contact my friend at Vision if you need to.. He can help..
And I am asking----What bodywork???

The parts have to be sprayed separately
because the bumper paint has to have a flex agent added to it. Add in the fact that the texture of the surface they are painting is a bit different and you have a challenge. Having said that if you look at the rear of my car you'd see 3 different surfaces painted years apart and 400 miles or more apart. The original body, a repaired bumper and some Bumperettes. And the match is perfect. Where the front bumper painted at the factory seems a bit off from the hood. I had a Lincoln with a white that had a bit of a rose tint to it that the best paint shop in town took 3 tries before they got it right. It never left their shop before they got it right.
I know. My concern now is having to redo the paint especially on the side skirts as they are not coming off the vehicle and will have to be done on....

Hey my friend,
My old 996 (which was Glacier white) got ran into in a parking lot. It punched a small home in the rear bumper and I had it replacd. I had the front bumper and skirts repainted at the same time.
My body shop was able to match the paint perfectly. I could never see any difference between the body and bumpers.
I would go back to the body shop and have them make it right. It's not like it's some kind of exotic metallic or something. A skilled paint shop should be able to match it.

Hey I was going to get in touch with you.... Yes I understand the paint should be able to be matched... It is funny, as I explained above, all the soft parts have never matched and they are all original.. I am in the garage checking it out now and the color difference, espcially on the sides is very noticable.. i will take some picture and send them to you this weekend..

Anybody with a Glacier White 996? If so please let me know the color matching of the bumper, etc., to the body.
Apparently Porsche, at least on the MK1s, painted the soft parts of the body separate from the metal body. Soft parts include front/rear bumper, mirror casings, rear spoiler, trim around the door handles, and the strips that run on each side along the roof. Apparently they were painted elsewhere and then integrated to the body. It is not extremely noticeable but you can see the difference.
All those items on my 996 are the same white but a different shade from the body. Nothing has been repainted and all paint is original.
The reason for the question now is that I had a GT3 bumper and side skirts installed yesterday. The paint guy did everything he could to match the color to the body include bring the gas lid to the paint supply house to match. However, now that everything is installed, the color of the bumper and side skirts look like the original bumper color. It is not too noticeable on the bumper but the side skirts are—I guess because they are noticeable against the door, etc. And it kind of bugs me…
Anyway, does anyone have any thoughts? Is it due to plastic retaining paint different than medal? Anything..

I measured fender to ground, fender to wheel center, fender to rim protector on tire. All of them gave essentially the same answer.
As stated the body is not true. The only true way to measure is from the identified reference points under the vehicle using a true (measured flat) surface as the ground you are using is not equal and flat.
My C2 was perfessionally adjusted, aliened, etc., and the distance between the fender lips and the ground is different on each wheel. In your case your suspension is fixed (not height adjustable) so it should be fine. Does the vehicle drive straight or pull?
I put the Porsche X74 suspension on a C2 last year and the measured distances where different on each wheel; however the vehicle tracked straight and when brought in for a wheel alienment was pretty close even though the vehicle was dropped in height somewhat.

If you are measuring from the fenders to the ground you might never get the same height. This is because the vehicle especially the body is not always true. Proper way to measure is using the measuring points under the vehicle.

I wonder if this is possible a part number for the aero bumper and it is numbered different than the GT3 for MK1??
