  1. Installed new battery today-no effect. I suppose this doesn't exlcude a circuit board problem with the remote, but how likely is this? The remote has never been dropped, subject to any shock nor has it been wet. I think now I need to have a error scan with the testor, but I know the stealer is going to do me over.

Hi there, my 1999 996 C4 is having the same mysterious prob this week. I can manually lock doors, but key is not opening remotely with strong LED lighty thing and fresh remote battery. Would be interested in whether monro86 issue has been resolved and what the solution was. Thanks!

This is really strange. A lot of people are having similar issues, including myself. Tried out the battery and tried out all the possible solutions posted here at the forum and it still does not work. :renntech:

  2. My understanding is that MY97, 98, and 99 were 2.5 liter and the 2.7 liter engine started in MY2000.

Thanks Loren...I just want to make sure because the spark plugs I bought was for a 2.5L Have you look at the oxygen sensor I bought from oxygen geek.com? Would there be any difference between the bosch from oxygeeks?? thanks

    jc:

If you don't want to spring for the costlier Bosch direct fit replacement O2 sensor, the universal Bosch ones that require you to splice the wires are in the same price ballpark (maybe a little cheaper) that the ones that are direct fit replacement from the Oxygengeek website.

Several electrically informed posters on this board have explained that there is no difference in the performance of the universal type of O2 sensor (as long as it is the correct Bosch application number) as compared to the direct fit Bosch unit. I had always been under the impression that splicing the wires (or soldering them) would make a difference because of the change in the resistance values of the spliced wires, but that is apparently not the case.

    Regards, Maurice.

    Thanks Maurice

  3. A leaky water pump is not uncommon, and is often an indication the pump will fail soon. My recommendation would be to replace it.

Once you have replaced the pump and have all your hoses back on, you can refill the system via the fill tube located in the trunk next to the oil fill tube.

Take a moment to run a search, there is at least one DIY thread here on renntech on the proper procedure for filling and bleeding the cooling system.

    Good luck!

thanks Kabel..found the thread..still waiting for the seal and the hose I ordered from porsche....

Finally got evertyhing in place..water pump, thermostat, belt drive...tomorrow: sparks plugs and oxygen sensors...thanks everyone for your help

  5. I have the same issue, only sometimes the remote works (but i have to be super close to the car, and even then sometimes it doesnt work) and sometimes it doesn't work. The key works just fine. I replaced the battery with a new one, and same results.

    ???

Thanks everyone for your replies..I'll try out and changed the battery if not I guess I'm gonna have to go to the dealership and have them look at it.. :renntech: :thankyou:

  6. Ok, I finally got the new water pump in place, the radiator hose, the thermostat and the new belt drive. Since, I have the car still on the jack stands, I decided to replace my spark plugs but when I removed the old one, the part number and the brand is different from what I purchased. Also, I am not sure what my car's engine size is: whether it is a 2.5 or 2.7 liter. I looked for any information in and out of the car but couldn't find it. Any ideas where I can find this info???

I'll be starting to replace the oxygen sensor as well and I just want to know if you guys have used this type of oxygen sensor:

    OXYGEN SENSOR

    Thanks...

    JC

  7. :thankyou:

I know how to remove it..I just need to know what paint they used and how it was prepared prior to painting it..thanks

    1) The surfaced needs to be slightly "etched" so you get good adhesion

    2) Primer coat

    3) 2-3 coats of quality paint

    4) Clear coat

    5) Let the paint really "cure" before you put the windstop back in, especially the plastic grill/vents.

    :thankyou:

  8. The silver Boxster you posted a picture of has a Kokeln rear deck lid and spoiler installed. Attached are a couple more pictures of this setup - including a couple other shots of the specific car you posted - a Boxster GT3 RS  .... whatever that is.

I've got the Kokeln ram air ducts and can attest that their quality is top notch, but then you'll pay for it too. I've never seen this rear deck/wing though, so your mileage may vary....

Ok, I called them today and here is the price quote I was given: BOXSTER DECK LID IS FOR $1091.38 AND THE WING ITSELF IS $1,355.05...WOW!!! I WILL BE SPENDING 2,500.00 INCLUDING SHIPPING... :king:

  10. There you are Marice.

Its a pain but if you can build a house or read a blue print you can sort this out. When your done you'll marvel at how simple it really was. As tool pants said, you first need to get it in the service position and familiarize your self with the components (levers, cables, tie-rodss, etc)

Everything has probably been covered here or on one of the other Boxster forums. “Maurice” is the man you really want to talk to or do a search of my threads. I went through the gamut last year on line (here I think)

    Regards, PK

yup PK is right. Maurice and TOOL PANTS are the experts!!!

  11. well... "cool" is a matter of personal taste. You'll need to look into the after-market for spoilers like that (Techart, Gambella possibly).

If you put one of those on you will certainly stand out. ^_^

Cool, is certainly a matter of personal taste. In my opinion, those spoilers are sort of ricey to put on a German car.

Just make sure your prepared to drill a few holes through your trunk, and post some picks when your done.

Ok, perhaps I exaggerated a little bit....I just can't seem to find spoilers for boxster similar to 996 Turbo and 996 GT2, and the 987.. :(

will defintely post some pictures once I found what I'm looking for...

  13. You mean like this? _MG_2227.jpg

Sorry for the small image. It's a track car and I had to drill holes in the trunk. I don't like the lift in turn 8 at Willow Springs at 120 mph.

yes..similar to that..can you take some more pictures so I can get a better idea what it would look like..thanks

  14. post-27827-1213074686_thumb.jpgpost-27827-1213074492_thumb.jpg

Ok, ive been looking for a spoiler for my Boxster and I found these pictures online..Any ideas where I can get one of these??? I have a 1998 boxster. All I found so far for boxsters are crappy spoilers..Why can't they make a super cool spoiler that will stand out like the one on the pictures????...Thanks

  15. You need to cut the connecting web to get the old gasket out. http://p-car.com/996/diy/waterpump/

Remove the caps then the plastic plate under the caps. To open the bleed valve you lift it metal lever up and it will stay in the up position.

thank you very much..I appreciate all the tips and the time you took to answer all of my questions...still waiting for the parts i need..once i get it(hopefully tomorrow) I can start putting things back together..

  16. Not at all, because I have owned cars in the past where you did have to lock down a belt tensioner. But they were cam belts, and all you are going to replace is a fancy fan belt. You can even drive the Boxstir without the belt on, but then it is hard to turn the steering wheel.

As for the replacement belt. http://www.renntech.org/forums/index.php?s...506&hl=belt

As for the thermostat, you leave it alone. Murphy's Law. The water pump has a reputation for failing after X miles, not the thermostat.

    Take pictures.

Once everything is back together you need to bleed the air out.

cool!!! I found some thread that you just leave the coolant cap off overnight and this should let the air bubbles out..is this true???the other thing I did too is, before I did it, I asked the dealership what kind of coolant I can use. He said that I could use any coolant as long as it is 50/50...so, I used prestone to top it off(this was before I located the leak)...now, i read on one of the thread that i shouldn't mix it and should stay with porsche coolant...and if mixed, it will form a jelly like coolant..can I just flush it with distilled water before I added the porsche coolant with 50%distilled water??

No, just leaving the cap off will not bleed air out.

You need to open the bleed valve for a few days and check/top up the level at least daily until it stops going down.

If you are doing a complete flush any good coolant for alloy/aluminum engines should be fine. Porsche's coolant is organic.

one more thing, I just removed the water pump but the metal seal is stuck..i guess it's connected to something and needs to be cut.....any ideas on how i go about in doing this??tools?? thanks in advance...where is the bleed valve?? thanks tool pants
