This is definitely the way to go, I would just pick up a cheapo OBDII from Harbor Freight (I think that's a CEN-TECH) or Amazon (the newer Acctrons work well) and then go durametric for the Porsche. I personally spent way too much money on a fancy OBD reader for my other cars, and the first time I saw a CEL in the Porsche I wished I had gone the Durametric route.
  2. Just thought I'd add that the CPO warranty does not appear to cover mufflers, sport or otherwise. If it is covered under another warranty (which would likely be the case only if recently installed), you may have a shot. And you can always drop into another dealer, my experience is that most dealers love doing warranty work when possible/excusable. You may want to ask the dealer's service manager to research this.
