  1. Ok, my Porsche has been standing a lot lately. I have not had the time to keep her battery power charged. SO! I tried to start her yesterday and noticed very little power. I cannot even pop the hood to get to the battery.

Can anyone tell me what I can do to jump the car without accessing the battery?

    Loren?

I know this is an old post but can't you just push start the car?

  2. Hi all,

I's been a while since my 986's sold.

I missed Jeff, Loren, and the great Renntech gang here, so came back with 987.

OK, here is my first question.

The location of cigarette lighter plug in is now far away from winshield, where do you guys put your radar detector? Thanks in advance.

Are you coping me ;) just kidding

I had an artic silver with red leather 986 as well. Bought a new speed yellow 987. Have hardwired my solo S2 to keep from going through batteries all the time. Easy to take with me when I get a rental.

  3. Get the windstop and xenon headlamps. Upgrade the wheels if you can afford them. I have a stock radio with the PCM 2.1 and its a little weak. Might as well splurge for mats, you will pay about the same on ebay. I love the steering wheel controls and havent bought a car without them for about 15 years.

I am happy with the 5 speed but havent driven a 6 speed.

Just curious what color your going with, some colors have some nice to have exclusive options you may want to consider. I have the matching seatbelts, dash, airvents and boxster emblems. Seen a few cars close to optioned like mine but have never seen one exactly like it though sure there is one out there somewhere.

    Good luck!

  4. Hey thanks for your response. All valid points. Do you have a picture of your car? Just wanted to see what it looks like....

Here is a pic of my boxster with 19in wheels from the factory. They are the turbo wheels and no lowering or other mods are needed. I have read some posts that say that the 19in wheels doesnt handle as well and hurts the performance due to unsprung weight. Havent researched the difference but my car is just a sunday pleasure car and I like the look of the 19 in wheel much better that the 18.

  5. Just bought a new Porsche and found out I am going to Iraq again. This will be my 4th time (reason I can afford a Porsche). How do I store the car. When I went over in the early 90s I filled my cyclinders with oil and disconnected the battery. The last 2 deployments I just sold my car before I left. I just bought this car so selling it is not really an option even though I got a great deal on it.

  6. Who do you use for service on the PCM 2.1. My cingular chip doesnt work and I went to the ATT store and they said the phone was the wrong frequency for their network.

What other carriers use a compatible chip? Curious as to who has the best network. I have heard bad things about T mobile and have only used ATT.

  7. Does anyone have any pics of boxsters with racing stripes? I was considering putting a racing stripe down my speed yellow boxster. I have seen a few corvettes with the black stripe and wanted an idea of how it would look. Going to use film so I can take it off if I hate it. Any thoughts?

I could imagine racing stripes somewhat like the f430 scuderia that progressively get larger as the go up the hood would look nice.

This was a model I found in yellow

    thanks!

Thats what I was thinking, and with a decal it will come off easily. I just wanted to make sure I wasnt in left field.

  9. :o I'm new to the forum.

I just got a 2005 Boxster S. This is my third Porsche. I love this car already. I have noticed that after I drive the car for awhile and stop, there is a brief hot rubber smell. I notice it as I get out of the car. I know this has been mentioned by other people. But I have never heard a good explanation for the smell. Some people have said that the smell persists without any problems but it worries me. Any ideas.

The independent dealer and service shop where I bought the car have been all over it chasing the smell before I bought the car. They found nothing wrong. I trust their assessment.

I too have a 2005 Boxster S and have noticed the same smell but have had no problems with the car in the year that i've owned it .

I have a new boxster with 19 in rims, I figured it was just the soft compound tires as I notice it more when I drive hard. I would be curious to see if 17 in wheels and tires do the same thing? I never noticed it with my old boxster that had 17 in rims.

  10. Akif,

Forgive me for my ignorance but what is the advantage of the 18" wheel vs. the 19" wheel? Seems you would get more performance from the larger wheel.

    thanks

    Mitch

There is a common misconception in the general public that bigger wheels = better handling. Here's where the misconception comes from:

    1) People see race cars and they have big wheels. There is only one reason race cars have big wheels - so they can fit big brakes. Otherwise they want as small a wheel as the rules allow. Small wheels weigh less and have lower rotational inertia. Since wheels and tires are part of unsprung weight lightening them is roughly 4 times more important than lightening the car's body or engine.

    2) Aftermarket tire resellers and car magazines have pushed the idea of plus sizing. The concept is that we can keep the tire outside diameter the same but decrease the sidewall height by going to a larger inside diameter. Since sidewall flex increases roughly by the square of sidewall height, and flex decreases transitional handling, mags have equated bigger wheels with better handling.

The reality is that for you want the smallest diameter wheel you can get without giving up sidewall stiffness. Probably a 45 profile tire is about as stiff as you need for the street.

  11. Thats a cute car, and it seems like a good deal. I test drove a speed yellow S a couple of years back and it was the closest thing to driving a police car with the lights on - traffic continuously pulled over to let me pass... I could get used to that ;)

Thanks! I think it was a fantastic deal, on the road for 44,600 thanks to no sales tax in oregon. stickered for 59525

  12. Sorry, the air vents and the 19s don't do it for me. But, if you enjoy them that's all that matters. Have fun with your new ride!

Really?? I would have never paid for the vents but I like them and they were already on the car. The dealer took a loss on it so I look as them as a free upgrade. I still dont see how they can charge 1200 for vents? I would have rather had heated seats. The 19s on the other hand are awesome, not looking forward to buying new tires though!

The dealer told me they took about a 2K loss and there are about 2K in options I wouldnt have paid for but they are nice to have. Havent seen another like mine on any forumn or website so its nice to have a unique car.

  13. Concerned with how often I will be buying tires at around 1200.00 a set! I am estimating about once a year.

You should get about 15-20,000 miles on the rears if you take good care of them. Proper inflation is key. Of course this does not include any track-time or Autocrossing.

The dealer told me that I could expect around 10K miles out of them. That sounds a little low! Got the windows tinted today and that gave it a nice look. Really like the Nav package with the phone although my cadillac is easier to use.

As far as the car, apparently it was a special order from a drug dealer or something like that, the IRS came and took the deposit and records from where the guy had purchased other cars. Salesman said the dealer ended up losing about 2K after all was said and done, seems like they would have taken a bigger hit than that but apparently Porsche has a 6500.00 dealer incentive on them right now.

  14. majormcf, I bet that car was a Custom Order that was never picked-up by the person who placed the order. I say this because that is a unique set of options. Not the usual fare the dealership picks out.

I think your right! His loss, my gain! I would not have splurged for some of the options but getting 15K off sticker made it a moot point. Air Vent option, rear lid, roll bar and climate control are nice but not sure I would have paid for that. The 19in wheels look awesome but 3675 is a bit steep for a wheel upgrade imo.

I wanted the Nav package and xenons and a wheel upgrade (18in), everything else was just a bonus! Concerned with how often I will be buying tires at around 1200.00 a set! I am estimating about once a year.

  15. Buy 93 octane from the busiest name brand station in your area. Chevron if you can get it.

I usually get my fuel from a Valero and use the 89 octane in my bmw and SRX cadillac. They carry the 93 octane as well. I am in nowhere arkansas and there are alot of generic fuel stations that I avoid. I usually go to the Valero because its brand new and I assume the tanks are still fairly clean.

I will try to fill up along the interstates at Chevron when I find my way out there.

    Thanks for the tip!
