  1. My current car just got wrecked and am looking at a 1989 911 Silver Anniversary edition with about 100,000 miles on it. The owner says it burns about a quart of oil every 1000 miles and a mechanic said it needed valve guides. I'm getting a PPI done later this week but for a 100k mile 3.2 with worn valve guides, would a total engine build be a better option? Better to pass on the car? The car drove fine, no smoke but it felt a little gutless compared to my Boxster S.

All depend on cost and condition of the motor. At 1000mile per quart it doesn't need doing anytime soon. Leak down tests etc are what is needed.

    Ask here.

  2. Well, I recently sold my 02 Boxster S and have a notion to make good on that dream as a teenager - one day I will have a 911 Carrera just like the one in poster hanging on my bedroom wall.

I am trying to buy a 911 of the mid eighties era (probably 1985) and have a few questions for those in the know.

    1) Did all sport models come with the whale tail - how can I easily identify the sport packaged equipped 911? For the 85 year was there basically 3 choices - Carrera Coupe, Carrera Targa or Turbo?

    2) Targa vs Coupe - is the body rigidity really that much reduced in the Targa?

    3) Having never driven one - how is it likely to compare to the Boxster S I just sold. Is it as fun to drive, .......how will it handle in comparison?

    Any input is appreciated.

    Thanks.............Alan

Impact bumper 911s (as they are called) will be nothing like your Boxster to drive. Old 911s are a class of there own. You wont regret it, but you must do your research first.

The only site dedicated to theses cars is http://www.impactbumpers.com/ register on the website and introduce yourself, tell em Coxy sent you. All the info you require you will find their in the forum.

Good luck, see you in the forum.

  3. hi all

    carrera 3.2 1987 year model

the engine is in need of a rebuild the vehicle has done 136,000 miles and is burning oil a bit and fouling the plugs up . can anyone advize me on whether the bottom end will need doing as well ? it has good oil pressure and no rumbles ! so i was hoping to get away with valve guides / rings basically a top end rebuild

any suggestions or thoughts greatly recieved

    thanks simon

Im in a similar situation, mine 3.2 sse 1987, is in need of valve guids its done only 65k. Some say to do the lot whilst the engines out but thats a lot more wonga. If it had 100+ miles on it then i would do the bottom end. On the strip down it may show that it needs it. Think im going for valves, guides & rings on mine.

Let us know how you get on.
