  1. Depending on the degree of damage, you might be able to get the bumper repaired by one of the specialists that actually do it on site. I've used them for a fairly large scrape on the back and the results were outstanding. Perfect match in paint, perfect fix...$200 Cdn. Search for one of these professionals, as they often do work for the top dealers such as Mercedes, BMW etc. At least they'll be able to tell you what they can do. They do it in a day...its amazing.

  2. Well, I learned that the creaking noise in the rear of my car required the replacement of both control arms. I lost the debate as to whether it should be covered on my extended warranty and to add to that, they found a nail in my new rear tire. The control arms on my 2000 C4 with 70,000 kms have now all been replaced due to wear. The fronts under warranty last fall, just after I bought it.

I go to pick up the car today and they can't find my key.....anywhere. While I'm standing there with my dealer, I notice the license plate in the front is a little crooked. I notice the car is a little dirty around the wheel wells too. I go home, get my spare bring the car home.

I discover someone bumped the front, pierced the bumper, bent the housing clip that holds the license and the car has been splattered with what looks to be cement. I was none too pleased. Took it back, pointed it out, was asked to come back Monday. Not wanting to let the cement cure further, I took it home and 7 hours later got it clean. The car was driven when the street around the dealer was being washed. The cement dust from the new sidewalk, combined with the water made....cement... that got on the car. For those of you who get this on your car, act fast. Use warm soapy water, some very good wax/polish - I used Meguiars ScratchX - and get scrubbing. It's the toughest thing I've ever had to get off.

  3. I had a chance to drive my wife's girlfriends new 997 C2 Cabriolet. I took the car through its paces and got a decent perspective on how it drives. Some interesting observations. First, the 997 was a smoother shifting car at least compared to my 2000 996, although mine has a new clutch. It was an interesting perspective from the cockpit, but overall the car seemed smaller to me. Second, it felt a little subdued and the steering was precise, but light and almost a little vague. Overall a nice car, but somehow...it lacked a little of the exciting "rawness" I experience in the 996 C4. As to overall power/acceleration, I didn't notice much difference at all, if anything the C4 felt a like it had a little more torque. In any event, it was certainly a refined ride, smooth and linear. As to the cockpit, didn't grab me like I thought it would. I'm sure a few more hours in the 997 and I'd get some different impressions, but it was an interesting contrast none the less.

  4. Well after driving around for a while the dreaded vibration was still in the steering wheel, exhibited at higher speeds. Sure enough it took two trips to solve. An out of round tire in the rear, fixed for free and I paid for the other one - so I have two new ones. And then the front forced balanced, for the second time - for a nominal amount. Finally....got it driving right. For those with similar problems, you've got to be persistent.

  5. After doing a little research, its amazing to learn just how much impact tire pressure can have on the handling attributes of any car, let alone a C4. Significantly under/over inflated tires will have a material impact on handling. According to Bridgestone, an inflation mismatch greater than 5 psi means that two tires can be significantly different in circumference. In a dual assembly, like a truck, the larger tire will literally drag the underinflated tire. So depending on just how much the 4wd system is activated, an underinflated tire can have quite an impact.

I'll be using the pressure guage more regularly from now on. ;)

  6. I have cleaned up my 2000C4 after it being in low use mode for the winter. I've only owned it 6 months. In the winter I drove it on clear days only and infrequently. Well, I had noticed the car was tracking to the right slightly and a very slight shimmy at higher speeds. I checked the tire pressure and sure enough, all tires were at different levels and lower than the recommended pressure. I adjusted all of them to recommended pressure and now it tracks straight. The shimmy is gone too. I can understand it tracking straight, but the shimmy gone? Don't get me wrong...its great, but I've never experienced that "fix" before. Anyone else experienced that?

I have stock 17's, relatively new Pirelli PZeros.

  7. What is the average life for a factory set up  of struts/springs etc..?

Also "when they go..." what characteristically will I feel when cornering?  :drive:

Absent visible leakage, can one tell too by visual inspection or palpation?

    Paul

    (1999' C2 Coupe w/ 18" wheels with 73k miles)

This is a good question. I'd like to know too. My sense is that shocks may wear faster than springs and how you drive may impact the life.
