  1. Hi Darren,

I think i read your first post incorrectly and thought you were asking if California cars specifically included an extra or additonal factory warranty to cover catastrophic engine failures...

Anyways, I have a Repair Master, aka Warrantech extended warranty. www.warrantech.com. They have been decent so far and the warranty covers all engine internally lubricated parts, so they could be worth checking out.

    Good Luck!

did you have any warranty work done? how was the claims process?

  2. * Note: just saw the previous thread same topic: http://www.renntech.org/forums/index.php?showtopic=21709

hi there, was wondering how concerning my noisy clutch should be. all still feels, works as usual but can really hear acuation of the clutch as i push it in. kind of like walking on an old wood floor. i've seen a tech notice about this and the resolution could be solved by lubing up the right areas. would that pretty much into a "take it into the shop" thing? i realize this could be a much bigger issue, but was hoping to get some feedback on some common issues in this area. thanks.

try spraying the area where the clutch appears to go into the firewall with white lithium grease. this should solve the problem.

  3. Guys - I will not be able to make it tonight. My company (Chrysler) just announced that they are laying off 25% of the corporation's salaried workforce by the end of this year. I do not know how much longer I will be employed at this time, and need to start planning and making arrangements. Unfortunately, this will most likely include putting my beloved pcar up for sale.

If you know of any companies that need an engineering manager/supervisor - please let me know.

oh geez, that's bad news. i'll certainly keep an eye out for any opportunities. i'll PM you with my email address and you can send over a resume.

  4. this item is listed on Ebay and i was wondering if any have had experence with them. do they really add 12HP?

    http://cgi.ebay.com/ebaymotors/Parts-Acces...d=p4506.c0.m245

my understanding is that an engine needs some backpressure. bypass removes just about all of it so you'll experience some loss of torque at low RPMs. as to whether or not they'll add 12 HP, the only way to know for sure is to dyno your car with them. try getting on a dyno check the HP and then get on the dyno again without mufflers. this will show you what changes, if any, you'd experience with bypass pipes.

  5. how about 8pm on this Friday at Richard O'douls. If you type in D_ck, the website detects a bad word, hence 'Richard'. I'm out of town Tuesday thru Thursday.

    Ken

    racerken@yahoo.com

Not sure if I can make it on Friday just yet, but I will let you guys know.

    Do you mean D_ck O'Dowds - 160 W. Maple - Birmingham?

    -Don

Can't make it tonight, family in town. Let me know if everyone meets up again. Have a great weekend!

We have a tentative date/time of 9:30 pm this Friday at Richards. Can you guys make it?

I have to show you guys the new engine!!! It also whines like an F1 car(not really but it's in my mind). Today I drive 3.5 hours down to Wooster, OH, with new tires.

    Regards,

    Ken

i'll be there sometime between 9:30 and 10.

  6. There are two mechanics in the area: Gilsons who I think was featured in the Freepress (I think he gives oil change lessons) and the other guy in Novi (I'll get his name from work).

    $70/hour is pretty good.

Hey Yasuro, this sound ridiculous but I have one Dunlop Wintersport D2 for the 996 front tire. Someone side swiped my car years ago in the Boxster and his insurance paid for my rim and tire. As it turned out the D2 was discontinued so they gave me 2 D3's. So in my garage is 1 D2 and a funny looking rim (cosmetic damage). Your more than welcome to take a look at it. Give me ridiculous offer and it's yours. It's good if you just want sub-light speed tires to deal with winter. If you want, you can compare the D2 to the D3's as I have them both.

We should all meet at (Richard) **** Odouls one night for some show and tell or horror stories.

    ken

    ken,

thanks for the offer. if i end up with a mixed set of tires i'll keep you in mind.

we should all get together before the weather gets too dicey. i'd say beers and stories would be a good idea. i might even be available this saturday.

  7. Yasuro-san, (I'm totally guessing on the '-san' part so don't be offended if I'm off)

OK, so this month is not so good. My stupid retirement plan lost about 30k just in the last 30 days. I hate all bankers.

The good news: I have my car back and it runs really new.

The bad news: I paid for it.

    Here are the facts:

I picked up my car today.

The bill was $ 1986.79 at $ 119/hour(which was lower than quoted so I think they adjusted the hourly rate)

Labor charge for the engine removal, engine disassembly.

Failure: Intermediate shaft bearing, engine full of metal shavings.

    PCNA approved goodwill engine replacement.

Engine reinstalled, cleaned transmission, flushed coolant, recharged AC, replaced drive belt (it was cracked).

The manager was Mark Torongo. I think DFC69 had a bad experience with Mark but I saw the good side. He treated me well on all occasions especially in being on my side to convince PCNA that the car was well maintained and that PCNA should consider goodwill replacement.

The mechanic was Kern Serota who I did speak with today and he does know his stuff. He mentioned that the 05's forward had larger IMS bearings and that my replacement engine had the larger bearing and housing so I should not have a repeat problem. He also mentioned that the engine swap included all hoses, all plugs, the coil(s), starter, pretty much things that were bolted to the block.

I have let events settledown before I send my request to PCNA for repair reimbursement. I just have mixed feelings about having to pay for something that should not have broken down in the first place given the low miles. On the otherside of the equation, I could be out about $20k.

Now off to the wine glass.

    Ken

sucks about the the retirement account. i feel your pain. looks like my plans for early retirement are down the tubes as well.

from what i've read on other lists, you might be able to get some of the labor costs reimbursed. perhaps 1/2. good luck with that in any case.

for you and DFC69, i highly recommend http://www.gilsonmotorsports.com/ as an indie mechanic. howard has a great shop and if you're a PCA member, i believe the labor rate is $70/hr.

now i'm off to find winter wheels and tires for my 996. i use mine as a daily driver and intend to drive it until it falls completely apart, hopefully in 5-6 years *knock on wood*.

  8. ...

WRT to the future... Well it's either I keep the 04 996 with new motor or get an 09. Does anyone know if the IMS problem was fixed? Or, what can you do to prevent this? Change the IMS bearing every 4 years? I've read the thread on IMS which lists a number of drivers running into this problem but none discuss the prevention.(or I missed it)

    ...

racerken, congratulations on your new motor.

I believe the '09s have the new motor design which eliminates the IMS.

the '09 is a completely new engine with no IMS as such. it was described in either panorama or excellence magazine a few issues ago. the new car seems to work out all the problems in the 997/996 and hopefully will mean a new direction for porsche.

ken, did you get your car back? i was at fred lavery yesterday to pickup a tail light bulb. i saw a boxster and a black 996 turbo in the service area.

however, i did notice the big price drops on 08 997s and even on cayman S. 10k off of dealer list.

  9. From the MY99 Owners manual...

    post-1-1221106397_thumb.jpg

    1) That say "canadian model"

    2) I do not have the cut-outs

    3) But, the porsche dealership said it is "back there" while I should take the panel off to check..... my issue is.... how do i take the panel out? Is there anyone else here who have done that before??

i never had to take out the back panel. the cutouts are there about 1/3 the way down the rear glass straight down. sometimes it's hard to see. you have to cut them out with a carpet knife or box cutter.

  10. I got a 99 carrera with the GT3 body kit and wing. I got the car like this and now I got an OEM Deck lid ebay and as you can see fron the attached

picture is missing some stuff. I need to re-use from my GT3 deck the fan, hinges. My question is what I am missing? Wire harness, motor for spoiler?

    Visit My Website

based on the pic you only need the wire harnes and the locking hook (other than fan and hinges)

I don't get it. How does it raises and lowers? I got a wire harness for the fan. Do I need a different one?

the wiring harness for the OEM decklid is split. one will power the fan and wing motor, the other will power the light on the decklid.

  11. I recently purchased a 2000 Carrera 2 with 61,500 miles on it.

I have driven the car for a little over 1,000 miles in past 4 months. In early April the main crank bearing failed. I have an extended warranty that covers such mechanical breakdown, but the Warranty Co are refusing to pay for the repair, saying it's a "pre existing condition". I don't understand how they can say this when the car drove perfect right up to time it failed. However, I purchased the warranty after owning the car a few months, (est'd 62,500) and the deffect occurred only a few weeks later (62,650). Talk about bad timing and very bad luck!

The Inspector who has looked at the engine (removed from car and broken open), considers it to be in great shape (for age/mileage) and clearly was not driven with the deffect (!!??). The car was driving well right up to when I heard the "clank clank" in the engine, when I immediately turned it off and called the recovery truck.

My question is this: What do I do if the warranty company some how wiggles out of covering the repair, what recourse do I have? Legal action against Warranty Co. for breach of contract/fraud, Look to the dealer I bought car from for help? Ask N America Porsche for assistance? Other solution?

out of curiosity, which warranty company is it?
