  1. Thanks for the information, for $79 I am going to give it a shot. Worse case I just take if off and stick with the original unit. I will keep all informed on my experiences. \ I bought one, and here is my honest and as much as I can objective feedback, given that this is a 79.00 part. While the closest thing is about twice the price. It works fully 75% of the time, what does that mean? 75% of the time, I press the button and it does the whole thing perfectly (open or close full cycle) 15% of the time, I press the button, and nothing happens, have to press it again or keep it pressed as the automated part was not there 10% of the time, I press the button and it starts opening or closing, but the rear flap stays open (after the convertible opens or closes), have to press the button, and keep it pressed for the rear flap to come down For some reason, it does not light up with the interior lights. Tyler provided great customer service, the first one was even more erratic than the second one. He shipped a new one immediately upon contacting him. He also acknowledge the problem with the lights, I can live with it.
  2. I am about to replace my CD holder with a storage tray in my 2004 996 Cabriolet (BTW - The guys at Suncoast are great, knew exactly what I wanted, good price and got in a few a days later). I am also in the process of getting my CD-23 head unit updated from Becker Audio in NJ (via mailorder) in which they are going to add a 3.5mm jack to the back of the unit ($100 for the entire process - seems like a pretty good deal) so I can listen to music from my iphone/ipod. I am thinking of putting the 3.5mm jack at the back of the one of the storage trays in my console, so it is not so obvious when you look at the unit/dash. Does anyone know how much room is from the back of the tray (depth from the back of the tray) to whatever is behind the tray in the console? Many thanks - Steve
  3. Loren - Thanks for the advice. I did a search of the archives and have come across some excellent tutorials on how to replace the oil pressure sender. BTW - I found the following wrench at Amazon that will also do the trick as the type of wrench was referenced in a couple of the articles: http://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B003DA5Q2G It is $9 with free shipping if you have an Amazon Prime Account
  4. I have noticed that in the past week that I will get a brief message on my display in my 2004 996 saying that the oil pressure alert is malfunctioning. It appears that the analog oil pressure gauge is working (as far as I can tell). I hooked up my Durametric unit and go tthe following error message: Instrument Cluster : 9121 Oil Pressure (status: not present) Is this something that I need to fix ASAP? Is it hard to fix myself? Any other comments would be appreciated. Thanks - Steve
  5. I currently have a 2004 Cayenne Twin Turbo and in the market for a second car. I am looking a buying a 2005 Carrera from a local resident in my building. The VIN is WP0CA29965S755348 Is there anyway of telling what options came with this car? Thanks in advance - Steve
  6. A neighbor in my building in Florida is looking to sell his 1996 Carrera 4 Cabriolet. He asked me to give him an offer for the car, however I am having a hard time figuring out what a fair offer is (Edmunds/KBB are all over the place with their estimates). I was wondering if I could get some advice on the car as well as what I should offer him for the car. Below are some details on the car: 1996 Carrera 4 Cabriolet Current owner has the car for 5 years. iThe car spends it's summers in NY and winters in Florida. Believes that he is the 2nd owner. Very good condition (some wear/tear in the interior) Just put $8K into the car (including new top/computer) 36K milles, though he aid that the odometer stopped working about 5 months ago. Thinks he may have put 2-3K on the car since that. My gut is that it has 40K miles on it. Said the that AC works intermittently, had the problem since he bought the car. Is this a common problem with this model year? I will be using the car in Miami so having an AC (even though it is a Cabriolet) would be nice to have. Is there anything mechanical issues that I should look at while testing the car? Thanks in advance for any help/advice.
  7. I am spending the winter in the Miami Beach area and was looking for suggestions for a Porsche Cayenne mechanic in the Miami area . As my 2004 CTT just came off CPO this past fall, I am open to using an independent mechanic. BTW - Sorry for the typo in the above title, so much for my spell checker. Thanks in advance - Steve
  8. Loren - Thanks for the information above. Is it pretty easy to replace the oil sensor myself or is it a pretty involved job? Also do you know the part number for a 2004 CTT? Thanks in advance - Steve
  9. I have a 2004 CTT with about 60K miles on it that just came off of CPO about four months ago. When I was driving it today I got a error message in the message center console in the middle of the dash. I forget the exact message (two year old with the flu and wife in car), however it was something about oil temperature (or pressure?) sensor failure - not that it needed oil. The oil temperature gauge was working fine and the temperate seemed normal. Manual check of oil level was fine. When i turned the car off, the message went away. It came back on about 10 minutes into our return trip. When i got home I plugged in my Durametric unit and got the following erroor message (copied/pasted from the Durametric screen) Motoronic 7.1 Current Fault Codes P0199 Engine Oil Temperature Sensor Intermittent No Signal/Communications Is something that I need ot repair right away or can I live with this for a few weeks until I have time to get ot my dealer. Also what part needs to be replaced and is this fairly easy to replace or is it better to have the dealer do it? Also - Any recommendations for Porsche mechanics in the Miami area would also be appreciated.
  10. Thanks for everyone above with the towing tips. Ended up renting a 6' by12' trailer from uHaul in NYC. Below is a summary of the trip Made the trip from NYC to Miami in 22 hours. Average speed was 65 mph, average MPG was 9.8. The poor mileage was also due with having two bikes up on the roof as well as a Thule hard over container. The CTT was a champion. They only problem I had was looking in the rear view mirror and seeing a uHaul tailgating me for the entire trip :) Got a speeding ticket at 4:00 AM in the morning in South Caroling on I95 going 86 in a 70. 86 was probably the fastest I was going the entire trip and it happened to be when a South Carolina State Trooper was hitting me with instant on radar (I forget what band it was). The Valentine lit up when I was about 100 yards away from him sitting hidden in the median. the uhaul experience was actually much better than I anticipated. They were very friendly and had decent automation at the two locations that I visited. The trailer was in good shape and the guys were super helpful putting on the trailer (as well as helping ot diagnose a wiring issue)
  11. Andy - Thanks for the information. Looks like this trip will take a bit longer than by previous trips sans trailer. Best - Steve
  12. I spoke to three different subject matter experts and none of them said that this would work, so I decided not to go with it and will have the dealer in NYC do the programming. Said it would cost $150 to program two key fobs, I am going to have a local locksmith laser cut the keys. I will let everyone know how it all turns out.
  13. So has anyone in the US tried this method yet? I just order two new keyfobs from Sunrise Porsche (Luke Rogers in the parts department is a champion) and was told by a place in Brooklyn NY that advertises reprogramming of keyfobs that the dealership had to do the programming (my local locksmith can cut the laser keys) I might give it a go over the weekend, but am concerned about screwing something up. Thanks - Steve
  14. I have a 2004 CTT with about 60K miles on it and am about to make a trip from NYC to Miami in early October. i will need to rent a trailer from U-Haul in order to carry all of the family items down for the winter. I was looking for some advice about driving characteristics with the different size trailers along with any practical advice (I have never towed a trailer before). There are three sizes of trailers that I am looking at 6' x 12' cargo trailer 5' x 10' cargo trailer 5' x 8' cargo trailer Below is a link from the U-Haul site that describes the trailers as well as pictures of each model: http://www.uhaul.com/Reservations/EquipmentDetail.aspx?model=AV Questions: Is there much difference in the driving characteristics between the three trailers Assuming that the road is wide open, what would you recommend as a maximum speed Will I need any mirror extensions with these trailers Any other practical advice (even smart-*** comments will be appreciated) Thanks in advance - Steve
  15. As an update, I had the work done on my car this past week. They did the bearings/drive shaft under the CPO warranty. However they were not able to do the coolant tubes as they said that there was no sign of any leakage. If they would have replaced them anyway under warranty, they said that they could have gotten in trouble with Porsche NA. Also the AC system is not under CPO warrantee so I did not get the solenoid work done (the AC works like the day I got it) On the issue of the coolant tubes, do they start leaking (or any other form of acting up) before they decide to self-destruct? Thanks
  16. Tim - Thanks for the insight. I will bring this up with my dealer when I see him early next month. I will also post how my conversation goes with the dealer as well as the end result. Regards - Steve
  17. I bought a CPO 2004 CTT in June of 2008 with approximately 40K miles. It has been pretty much buller proof with the exception of the following issues: The TPMS acts up so I have just disabled it in the menu settings (it says that I have low tire pressure when everything is OK- classic false negative) I had to replace the hatch struts as they would not hold in cold weather (this was not covered under warranty) Was about $400 to replace There was a problem with the injectors which was replaced under warranty It now has about 56K miles. Is there anything that you can think of that I should have replaced while I still have the warranty? My dealer is pretty cool and fortunatley works with me on these sort of issues (would be the reason why I would buy from him next time Any help would be appreciated. BTW - Enclosed is a picture of my CTT on my recent return from Florida back to NYC. Amazing how people get out of the left lane when you approach them at 100 mph with a roof full of bikes/carrier. Jethro of the Beverly Hillbilly's would have been proud Regards - Steve
  18. Does anyone know where I can buy the rubber strips for the roof system that were referenced earlier in this thread. I bought my racks used along with a Porsche (Thule like) cargo carrier and they did not come with the rubber strips. Without the strips the noise is pretty loud at the moment. Thanks - Steve
  19. I have the same problem with my 04CTT. I tried moving them to the back together but you can still hear the noise (plus I agree with you that it is a pretty ugly solution). I eventualy got use to the noise. Not much you can do with the law of physics. If this is any consolation, imagine it that it is like living with a supermodel that snores, only you and hopefully a few others knows that she snores :)
  20. I have noticed the same thing with my 2004 CTT if I try to put it into reverse right after I start the car. If I wait 3-4 seconds after starting, put into reverse and hold the brake for an extra second or two - no noise. Maybe the beast needs a few seconds to stretch before hitting the road :)
  21. I just confirmed that the problem happens when the car is not moving (spending the winter in Miami Beach and the same thing happened during one of the many rain storms we have been having this winter). So I can rule out the A/C vent issue (though thanks for the suggestion). Does the clogged roof drain connection make sense in this case (the one listed below was a clogged roof drain but it was seeping into the back of the person's Cayenne - http://www.renntech.org/forums/index.php?act=attach&type=post&id=11709) I have the factory service manual in electronic form but cannot find how to get to the front drain? Any help would be appreciated. Any other suggestions? BTW - I have found it pretty rare to see CTT in the wild, however here in Miami Beach the city is full of them (though many seem to be driven by housewives :) Any other suggestions? Thanks - steve
  22. Thanks for the response, though what to you mean "do I have a roof lid on the car".
  23. There was an excellent post earlier in Renntech that was about a Cayenne leaking water in the storage area and the culprit was that the drain connector came loose and needed to be re-sealed with silicon http://www.renntech.org/forums/index.php?s...8&hl==11709 My isssue is that the same thing happened to my 2004CCT but it is leaking in the front passenger foot well. Does anyone know how to get to the drain in the front passenger side of the following picture? http://www.renntech.org/forums/index.php?a...st&id=11709 Also before I go to the drain, the footwell was soaking wet after driving in pouring rain for 40 minutes and another time in a car wash. Would that much water come from these drains? Thanks in advance - Steve Also - Thanks for the heads up with the Durametric recommendation. Bought one last month and it came in very handy in debugging a rough engine problem (Bad coils - which ended up getting repaired under CPO warrantee)
  24. Paul - I am not sure about your other questions as they are out of my areas of expertise, however I would highly recommend getting a Durametric. It is easy to use and the information that it gives you will ehlp you with the following: - When posting to Reentech, it will give the smart guys (and there are plenty of them here) the detailed informaiton that they require to offer you detailed rememdies (as you can see from the above posts). Otherwise wiithout the codes it becomes very difficult to debug and I immagine that the quality of your replies may be less than ideal. - It will help keep your dealer/mechanic "honest" as I find that if you go in with some knowledge of the problem they are less likely to treat you like a moron or worse case start playing "replace the part" game. I also keep my unit in the car in case I ever have a problem while traveling. - $300 is not cheap, however if you figure that you will be keeping your Porsche for a few years, it will pay for itself many times over Good luck - Steve
