Similar noise on my '98 2.5 manual, workshop says it's starter motor and not to worry - it's something to do with it not disengaging quickly enough, and will eventually need to be replaced, but so long as it's not every time you start the engine it's more annoying than serious.
Interestingly, I had the Idle Stabiliser Control replaced to cure a different problem, and the faster, cleaner start meant that I didn't get the sqeal for a couple of months. Just getting the engine serviced so that it starts more easily could make all the difference.

I wondered if anyone has any real expereince and opinions on some of the more alternative tyre choices. I face the usual dilemma - I can fit four brand new N-rated Toyos for less than the cost of replacing my worn out rear Pirelli P Zero rossos (fronts are fine). So the question is, which way to go? I am tempted by the idea of four brand new, matched N-rated tyres, but know very little about the three brands in the title. All of my driving is in hot summer weather (it rains for about three weeks a year here), so wet traction isn't a problem and snow is irrelevant. I may also take it out on track late in the year.
So, who's driven on Toyos, Kumhos or Yokohamas? And how did you like them?
Or should I just bite the bullet and stick with Pirellis to match the fronts?

Another Dubai driver! I've just picked up a 98 2.5 manual and had to take it in for its 120k km service this morning. Quoted $490 for the major service, $109 to change brake fluid, and (Oeer!) another $545 to replace gearbox rear main oil seal, which is leaking, and does need to be done. All up, $1,144, and right before Christmas. Argh! Still, our only independent dealer does seem to know what they're doing, and until you set up a rival service...
Where's your friend's garage, and maybe I could start doing some of my own work too!

Hi all
Finally succumed to the 'stuck roof' syndrome, but I'm fairly sure it is just a sensor or microswitch failure, nothing major or mechanical. Specifically:
'Roof open' light on dash permanently ON
Windows open correctly when I unlatch the roof, but the roof itself does not 'relax' - instead, it stays tensioned.
Handbrake light operating normally
No sound of motors trying to work when I press the Roof Open/Roof Close button
Searching here suggests it is either the Handbrake On sensor, or the microswitch in the roof latch itself. For anyone more expert than I, two questions
Do these symptoms point to a specific component failure (sensor, switch etc) and if so where?
Where are the relays located, so I can try checking/substituting Relay 10 (I think?) - it's a LHD '98 2.5 manual
All help very much appreciated. It's 27C today, and we haven't got a lot more nice weather left before summer...
