  1. My car had a "3/4ths" retrofit done - both headlights, but no fancy relay and harness. The proper retrofit kit comes with headlights, relay, wiring harness and some misc. parts and connectors. In the retrofit kit, the relays only purpose is to manage the angle of the Xenon eyeball - up to assist the Halogen high beam, then back down for low beam. It doesn't come with the leveling parts or functionality. I was under the impression that what you are doing is much more complicated.
  2. I found a new wire harness in OEM Porsche packaging for a reasonable price on eBay. It seems that you can splice in the wires in lieu of the terminals listed in the kit, so at this point I believe I have all I need to wire my lights the way they should have been done in the first place.
  3. Found the answer to my original question when I finally found my trans serial number. Build sheet says car should have trans serial number GA96002011587 and currently installed transaxle is GA96001022944. Looking at this chart in 996 The Essential Companion the LSD unit must have been replaced at some point with an open unit. Kind of sucks, but from what I read, the LSD needs rebuilding fairly frequently. I'm not planning on doing much track time and the TC will help out in snow if necessary. Also, the replacement is 11,357 units newer! Still a bit bummed though.
  4. I discovered what may have been the source of confusion on my end. I was looking at the owners manual that came with the car and other than a printed date of 5/03, I can't tell what year it's for - though clearly not 1999! So I had been looking at the dash diagram and index where both referenced PSM. When I finally got close enough to my dash button, it clearly reads "TC Off". Thanks. BTW - do you know where the serial number is located on the transaxle? I found a few cast-in numbers, but nothing that resembles the trans serial number that is listed on the build sheet printout I got from Suncoast.
  5. OK, I'm really confused now. I'm looking at Adrian Streather's 996 The Essential Companion and on page 254 he states: "All 996 models up to and including 2003 with PSM installed as an option were not permitted to be fitted with any other form of rear differential apart from an open one. This is because the mechanical action of the LSD interfered with the operation of the PSM." Then on page 299 under the discussion of PSM he writes: "PSM was originally installed as standard on 1999 996 C4...However it was available as an option for the RWD Carerra model range (option M476), but the cost was prohibitive because along with the PSM syatem, came a different engine, e-gas and a new engine mgmt. software version." I don't have option M476, and I can see a throttle cable under the car and r&r's one on the throttle body when I did the AOS job so I assume I don't have e-gas...
  6. Car in question is a '99 C2. Option sticker indicates: M220-LOCKING DIFFERENTIAL 40 % M222-TRACTION CONTROL SYSTEM M224-AUTOMATIC LIMITED SLIP DIFFERENTIAL I had it up on a lift and was turning the rear tires, but the other rear tire was turning in the opposite direction. Any US built car I've ever owned with LSD, the wheels would spin in the same direction. Anybody have any experience with this? Is the locking something that is somehow regulated by the PSM? Thanks
  7. So I ended up scoring a new one on eBay for $100. It was a "Make Offer" listing and I offered $100 for the heck of it. Now I just have to chase down the harness. http://www.ebay.com/itm/180767473532?item=180767473532&viewitem=&sspagename=ADME:B:EOIBSA:US:3160&vxp=mtr
  8. I found one for a decent price from a seller in the UK with this part number 996.618.051.10 in the eBay pic you can see the Bosch number is 0 307 870 007. I found another RENNTECH thread on this subject and a user posted this picture which seems to cross to the Bosch number exactly, but the last digit of the Porsche # is 5 instead of 0 so I'm a little concerned that being from the UK that it may have some RHD flavor to it.
  9. The TSB does specify a control unit. Unfortunately it seems that my retrofit wasn't done to factory specs.
  10. I had the passenger side out last night and everything looked intact. The 4 wire plug where the auto-leveling comes in clearly goes to a small cylindrical motor with black, blue, red, yellow wires. I'm thinking is probably a combination of wires that enerigize the motor. So are you saying that even with the earlier Litronics - the projector eye of the low beam would move up to enhance the high beam? I thought that the aiming movement was only to revent the low-beam from blinding oncoming traffic when the sensors determine a change in the ride height.
  11. Car is a '99 C2 Previous owner did the Litronic retrofit so the auto-leveling feature is not active. When I hit the highbeams, seem to not be illuminating the far off road as they should so I'm now concerned that the mechanism that adjusts the projector lens is aimed down and consequently narrowed the difference between the hi/low beam pattern. Any ideas how I can check this? I tried powering pairs of the 4 terminals where the connector goes, but didn't have any luck. Anybody been down this road before?
  12. I wonder if a better solution would be to just solder the offending wires together. If I understand it correctly, the buckle fastened is what the Airbag Control Unit uses to determine whether to fire the airbag. Why they would have that one on the drivers seat is a mystery since the driver would most likely be in the drivers seat during the collison <_<
  13. Thanks. Looking under my seats, it appears that this all has been done - there are a lot of cable ties in the places specified in the TSB. Also, both buckle part nos. match what I believe to be the latest part number. That said, there is a clip that is designed to hold the wire out of harms way as it goes from the buckle to under the seat. Neither side had the wire attached to the clip, so who knows, the wire could be bad now. I'll probably get under there and see if the terminals in the connector are gold.
  14. OK, I just checked, and the drivers side buckle has the more recent part number (996-803-183-09) on it so I suspect it's been "updated" at least once. Do the newer style go bad too? Is there a way to tell if the harness has already been update with the kit?
  15. Where are the ground wires - I see the connector under the seat - Is it obvious which are the ground ones?
  16. '99 996 Coupe I'm getting the code that indicates the problem is with the drivers side buckle. FWIW - the light isn't always on. It comes and goes. Anyhow, I read over the TSB and it seems the Porsche fix is to install a wiring kit and replace the belt buckle. I also read over many other threads on this subject on this site as well as Pelican and Rennlist and I see that some have some success cleaning up the buckle, but I'm not clear what they are actually cleaning up? Then there is the ground issue - which it seem the kit addresses) - is it worthwhile soldering in a second or 3rd ground wire - I assume that would be at the plug under the seat. If I have to I'll buy the parts kit and belt buckle, but I really don't want to fork out the cash unless I need to. Any direction would be appreciated. Thanks
