  1. I am a big fan of the Lloyd matts. When I owned a boxster, I purchased interior matts and one for the rear trunk. The quality is far superior to the OEM. It also feels more comfortable to the feet. My 996 purchased this past summer already came with Lloyd matts. I don't know how old they are, but feel thicker and heavier than the OEM. I would definately recommend them.

  2. I previously asked questions about a squeeking noise in my 1999 C4. Most people thought it was the front hood release, but adjustments did not help. When I drive slowly and go over bumps, there is a sound that I think sounds like the suspension/shocks/? is squeeking. Also, when stopped and I turn my wheel right and left, I can get the same sound. Power Steering fluid is normal. Car is running fine and handling fine. Recently got the weeks aligned. Any suggestions?

  3. I would also go with the 996. You will have less maintanence problems in the long run. I can't speak for the 964, but I had an air cooled 928 in the past and the car would overheat when the weather got hot and the car was stopped or slowed down. Trust me, no matter how much "fun" a car is, there is nothing fun about the temperature gauge inching up as you sit at a red light.

The dramatic title pretty much describes it.

I'm in the market for a new daily driver/enjoyment car, and after about 6 months of research I've decided on either a 964 C2 or a 996 C2.

Everyday I constantly switch back from both cars, thats why I want to hear some of your opinions. The 996 would obviously be the better DD but I'm not sure I would enjoy it as much as the 964, and air cooled flat six is orgasmic.

Unfortunately I have only been able to test drive the 996 and that was when I was about 9 years old, I have though been fortunate enough to be a passenger in a 964 and it was pretty amazing. Anyone ever driven a 964 and a 996 and what was your thoughts on each?

(**** every time I make a thread I have a 3 page essay in my head but it comes out trimmed, any extra info I'm forgetting I'll add it in as I go.)

For day to day driving i would definitely recommend the 996, if you were planning on driving the car on weekends or everyonce in a while i would go for the 964...

the ideal situation would be to have both parked in the garage

  4. Try "sportscarextras" ebay store. The website address did not copy correctly.

I also replaced mine. I have a unit with LED lights for both the rear brake light and the spoiler light. They are definately brighter than the original and I highly recommend them. They are sold on an ebay site http://motors.shop.e...s=1&_from=&_ipg

The guy who sells these items is the guy I purchased my 1999 C4 from. He used the car as a model, so I have all the items he sells. I also recommend the front bumper daytime LED lights. Really updates the car. Seems the quality of items he sells is very good. He sells the rear lights for $90.00.

IIRC there are a number of bulbs in there, not really designed for individual replacement. I ended up replacing the whole unit, ordered from Sunset. It's plastic and mine had gotten very brittle, from exposure to heat from the engine I assume.

  6. It seems to me that different types of interior upgrades go in fads. I remember in the early part of this decade how carbon fiber was the way to go if you have enough money. Now it seems a bit outdated. If you are thinking about selling in a few years, I don't think you will even come close to recoup your investment for alcantara and a few potential buyers may not like it, prefering the original interior.

    Eric

    will

As long as you stay tasteful with it, I don't think anyone is going to complain about extra alcantera surfaces when you sell.

  7. Thanks Geoff:

Good advise. The noise is only intermittent and does not bother me much. But, I will take your advise and have my wife run beside my car while I enjoy a nice beer in the sunlight.

    Eric

Thanks for the reply. It is definately not the top. The top is a 2008 GAAH top and does not rattle. I will listen more closely to the noise. I don't think it is the hood. It seems to be near the rear tires.

The TSB fix is for the piece above the windshield that the convertible top goes in to. If you don't get the noise with the top down, only with the top up, it's definitely related to the convertible top

The problem with squeaks is their exact location is sometimes really hard to track down. After multiple trips to the dealer to fix a squeak that was driving me crazy, the head mechanic and I went out for a joy ride through the canyons until we found a corner where we could reliably recreate the problem. He got out of the car and I slowly drove forward and coasted back for over half an hour until he was able to pinpoint the source of the noise. The fix was easy then. It just took a long time to diagnose the problem. If you can find someplace where you can consistently get the car to make the noise and you have a assistant who can stand outside the car in various locations until you can pinpoint approximately where the noise is coming from, it will be a lot easier to identify where to start checking

There's an old TSB (6110: Rattling Noises From The Cabriolet Top) for a new/improved set of convertible top roof pins that eliminate a lot of squeaking and groaning. Not very expensive. I helped a friend put them in in his '99 cab and he said his top was a lot quieter; very easy to do yourself. Part numbers from the TSB are as follows:

    996 561 605 02 A09 New/centering peg, incl. cap, left

    996 561 606 02 A09 New/centering peg, incl. cap, right

On my Boxster, I also had intermittent squeaking over bumps and it turned out to be the front hood latch adjustment. The Boxster and Carrera front hoods and latching mechanisms are the same

  9. Since you are all so helpful, got another issue. 1999 Carerra 4, cabriolet. I have an intermittent squeeking sound, when I am going slow and especially hear it when I go over bumps, like a speed bump. Sounds like it is coming from the rear wheels more than the front wheels. Sounds like something needs to be greased. I am having new rear tires and a 4 wheel alignment done on Thursday and thought you may have some suggestions on what I should have the shop look for / evaluate.

    Thanks,

    Eric

  10. I used your WD40 technique. I sprayed the latch and still no light. Used the front trunk many times over the next week. Still no light. Then, for unknow reasons the light began to work and has been working fine for the past few days. Weird? But, I don't care as long as it works. Thanks for the easy fix.

    Eric

I had the same problem with mine plus the front latch was a bit sticky. I made sure the bulb worked, tested for voltage and found that it switches ground, anyways long story short. sprayed WD40 into the front latch and inadvertently got it into the microswitch. The front trunk light has worked ever since.

  11. Do you get a single beep when you set the alarm?

If so, then you likely have a bad microswitch in the front latch assembly.

Yes, I get a single beep. I did not know I was supposed to have more than one beep. A few questions, how complicated is fixing a bad microswitch? Do I have to replace the front latch assembly. Also, the light is not much of an issue for me. I can live without it. Does the microswitch do anything else? Any other functions that may not be working?

    Thanks.

  12. my 99 996 cab with 60k miles has the rear window coming unglued from the top. Top is still in good shape I want to get rear window stiched in to repair. I am looking for a referal of a shop that does this in the Tampa Fl area.

    Thanks in advance!

I live in the Tampa area. I don't know any shop which replaces the rear window. I would suggest purchasing a new top with a glass rear window. It is so much better than the plastic and you can use the rear defroster which I used every morning in Tampa. I have a GAHH top which is just as nice as the original. GAHH has approved shops in Tampa they work with that can install the top. I also have a 99 cab, so if you want to see how it looks let me know.
