  1. Hi

I am posting an update on my engine rebuild. After 11 long weeks I finally picked up my car last Thursday. It now has a completely rebuilt engine with re-bored cylinders, JE Pistons, and a long list of other improvements. Mike and the team at PowerTech did an amazing job. I want to thank them for being patient and taking the time to explain thoroughly every step of the process. I am breaking in the engine for the next 1500 miles.

    Cheers

    Richard

  2. Hello all

I would like the expert opinion of the members of this forum. I have a 2002 996 C4 Cab with 70k miles on it. Back in June 2009, I noticed that the car was consuming more oil than is usual, about 400miles per quart, and black soot was accumulating on the left tail pipe. At the time it had about 60K miles. I brought it in to an independent shop where they did a leak down test and bore scoped the cylinders. The result was mixed. Neither the sleeves nor the pistons were cracked but the pistons rings were shot on cylinder 4 & 6. The recommendation was a complete top end rebuild. I decided to wait and see if the situation worsened. Over the past couple of months the oil consumption has gotten worse; it is now around 300 miles per quart. So I called the shop for an estimate on the rebuild and they came back with $8900. The parts are about $3600 so that means labor is $6300.

I would like to know from the members here if that number sounds accurate and if anyone here knows of another independent shop in NJ where I can get a second opinion. Also if anyone here has had this kind of work done what was their experience? Did they feel it was worth it?

Thank you in advance. I truly appreciate and value your input.

  3. Hi all

I need to have my coolant expansion tank replaced. Coolant started leaking from the left tailpipe the other day. At first I thought I had blown a head gasket but when I took a closer look I saw it was the coolant tank. Anyway I am gathering quotes and would like to ask the members of this forum if they have had experience with this replacement. Labor and parts. As always thank you for the replies.

  4. I brought the car into the shop last weekend for the 60K service. I also asked to look into the high oil consumption (1qt/400miles). Well I'm picking up my car from the shop tomorrow. The diagnosis is bad piston rings on cylinder 6. The recommendation is an engine rebuild. For now they say the cylinder sleeves are not damaged and I can keep driving the car, I just need to keep adding oil. I'm really bummed out. I know that a million things could have caused the piston rings to go bad but for future reference, short of doing a borescope prior to buying, what steps could I have taken before buying to foresee this problem? I bought the car used with 52k miles. Also what questions should I ask the shop before dropping another $4k-$8K into this vehicle? I'm not wealthy and money is an issue. This car is my daily driver and I have no other car. So if I do not rebuild it, then it will be bye-bye porsche for quite a long time before I convince my wife again. I truly love driving the car. Has anyone in this community rebuilt their engine and what was your experience. The advice from the community would be greatly appreciated.

    Thanks

    Richard

  5. Did you ever figure out what the problem was with your 03. I also have a 03 C4S and I also live in MN and have been driving the car this winter. It has been brutal winter as far as temps go and I noticed that my left exhaust pipe has extra black soot around it and I am also burning oil at a rapid rate. I am running 0W40 and am burning a Qt every 500 miles. It seems to have gotten a lot worse when the weather got cold. It has been between -10 and 0 here off and on for the last month. Does anyone have any more input on what would cause this?

Thanks for asking! Still working on it, but it is slow. With every tweek, the dealer needs to do an official oil check, which means drop the car off for a day while it cools, pick it up, arrange my schedule so that I can return at 600 miles, then leave it a day so it cools to recheck, then the service manager calls the regional Porsche rep. etc etc.

My history mimics yours--consumption went up after my first winter with the car, and has stayed at the high level. When it warms a little around here I really want to try 5W 50 Castrol (can't get 5W 50 Mobil).

    Hey Jon

Did you ever resolve this issue? It seems that I might be experiencing the same thing in the same bank of my 02 996C4. Before I bring it to the tech I would like to have an idea of what is going on.

    Thanks

    Richard

  6. After a month or two of searching and reading posts and articles on how to get my iphone 3G to play (and charge) through my CDR-220 I could not find any solutions that I cared much for. It was either a cable to play and another to charge, a cable to play but won't charge my iPhone 3G, FM static machines, cable needs adapter to charge iPhone 3G, have to get rid of your CDC to play your iPhone 3G . . . . . I figured there had to be a way that I could have a single cable, that played my iPhone 3G through the CDR-220 and charged it at the same time all while letting me keep my CDC. I know what many of you are saying about the CDC (I have read your posts), why do you want it . . . . . . I can not answer that question, it came in my car, I just wanted to keep it operational. I finally figured it out and have completed the process of installing a "contraption" that lets me play my iPhone 3G through my CDR-220, charge my iPhone 3G with the same cable and keep my CDC. It even lets me have an option of video out from my iPhone 3G for when I get around to installing a video monitor. It is a little pricey for a hack job (less than $100.00) but well worth it to me. If anyone is interested I probably can put together some kind of DIY or would be happy to answer questions. Please be patient, I am not on here a lot.

    Hello Helmslaw

I would definitely be interested in a DIY (with lots of pics :) ). I too have an iPhone 3G and the CDR-220. How long did it take you and was there any soldering involved?

    Richard

  7. Heloo All

My apologies for the bump, but I wanted to update the group on me clutch replacement. I went with an indie shop (too cold outside for a DIY) near where I live. PowerTech  in Rockaway NJ. Great shop! They quoted me 6.5 hours for labor and put in a Sachs Peformance clutch and flywheel. The parts were at or near cost and the service was fast. I am very happy with their work and would highly recommend them to anyone.

  8. BTW; Don't be surprised if you see one of these become available in the FOR SALE forum in a month or so. ;)

Thanks Foster. I'll keep an eye out for it. There are only two reasons holding me back from doing it myself. My garage is not heated and it's **** cold out there. And I forget what the second reason is...Anyway, I started calling around indie shops and so far I've got a quote for 10hr of labor. that's a little more reasonable but still a bit high.

SA321 - I guess dealers are little more honest on the other side of the pond.

  9. Hello all

My clutch is beginnning to slip, as I expected, and it is time to have it changed. I just contacted a dealer and was quoted 17 hours of labor to change the clutch on a 2002 996 C4 cab. That seems a little excessive. I've been searching around the posts and it seems that the labor should be closer to 6-7 hours. At over $100/hour thats $1000 difference. Any advice from the members? Does anyone know of an independent shop in Northern New Jersey who would be willing to keep the labor under 10 hours to change the clutch? Thanks for your input.
