  1. Loren's pic above puzzles me. I don't have anything in the middle of the oil filter. I have a oil filter housing that is just a cup and has a big o ring around the edge. That pic doesn't look like my 996 filter housing at all.

  2. Yes, you can remove the filter without draining the oil........

You will have some oil in the plastic cannister that you will remove to access the filter - so when you replace the filter cannister, your oil level in the sump may be 250 ml lower after you start the engine.

Just warm the oil up - let it drain back into the sump after a few minutes - top off the oil and all is well.

Have you tried this? I think you'll get a lot more than a cup of oil coming out.

  3. who did the 60k service? make sure the plugs were done. i would not use kn filter as it often causes maf going bad. clean your maf sensor with electrical cleaner spray. make sure your tires are properly inflated.

exactly when did the milage change occur? before 60k service? what other changes were done before this issue?

  4. This has been discussed many times. Bose is nice, best OEM ever fitted to a 911. It is quite good but is it NOT best. For your budget, you'll probly get better sound with aftermarket but you'll lose the stock look. I would not choose 01 vs 02 based on Bose alone. However, I do believe 02 is better because of numerous upgrades done in that model year over 01. Engine, interior, exterior, aerodymics are all improved. Plus, I don't like the Boxster headlights. If you come across a smoking deal on an 01, then take it if that's what you want. Otherwise, get an 02 and you won't regret it. 02 are still holding their value well for that reason. However, just don't take 02 based on Bose alone.

  5. You may need a new top. Many people had this and not have been able to glue it back.

There are a couple of upholstery shops that I recommend.

Palo Alto Upholstery and Premier Upholstery in Santa Clara are pretty good. Avoid Bascom Upholstery - very shady business owners that only care about money.

If you do decide to get a new top, GAHH now sells a glass window one for 99-01. They sell it on eBay and upholstery shop can put it in for you.

If coming up to San Jose is too far, you can order the top and have the dealer install it.
