You might find it humorous to know that I contacted the nearest Porsche dealer (in St. Louis 100 miles away) and the service manager told me he spoke to his technician with 30 yrs of experience but he had never heard of such a problem with a cab top. My local guy balked at ordering the part b/c he thought the dash board would light up if the switch were bad. He suggested I let his guy clean the switch...and then wait another week to order it and re-take apart my center console blah blah blah. All to "save" on a freakin $15 part (delivered). Yeah, right. Just goes to show you that the smartest Porsche people are right here on Renntech.org.

Glad it worked out for you. Mine turned out to be the hydraulic fluid. Also fixed based on infomration found on this site, which reinforces your theory even further.

I justed topped up my fluid. These instructions were extremely helpful. Wouldn't have had a chance without them. Thanks very much. Top is working better than before now. I actually sprung for the Porsche fluid, which was ridiculously expensive as I noted above. Not much is required, though, so I still have 3/4 of a bottle left. THose ball joins are a bit tough, especially given the space in which to work. They do ultimately just pop off though. Thanks again.

Thanks very much for the confirm. Went by the dealer this weekend to try and get the actual Porsche fluid for it. They basically confirmed that's what it was too. The stuff from them is expensive, though. Approx. $41 for 250cl. I told them to order it, but I might not go back for it and just use the John Deere stuff you showed here.

I have a 1999 996 C2 Cab 6-speed. It's got around 54,000 miles on it. I bought it at 47,000 a little over a year ago. Has the oriignal engine. Had to repalce the water pump becasuse of a pin-hole leak and the mass air flow sensor on oen of the cylinders. Other than that, OK. I have one question, though. I bought it from a dealer and he told me that the cars burn oil as a matter of course. Is that true? I don't seem to have a leak, but I can smell oil burn with the top down and I do have to add some periodically, but not terribly often.

Hmm You know I found myself chasing an odor like burning oil or something. But I have come to believe it is actually the clutch. My car has had the suspension tuned by Champion Moto. and it sits tucked on 295-30-19's. It is a little more difficult to start my car rolling then other porsches that I have driven. I just think that the amount of torque necessary to keep it going and the fact that I get on it sometimes overwork the clutch a little. = ) Besides I have never had any oil loss, ever. I guess I'll find out when I hopefully get the clutch changed. I've been planning it for over a year now!?! Best of luck with your smell I hope it's nothing bad.

I'm not that worried about it. They told me it was normal when I bought it from the dealer and it says in the manual it's supposed to burn oil. It really isn't that much. I knew a guy who had an new M5 and he had the same problem and they told him the same thing.

How do you operate the top with the driver door key? I have a similar problem, but my tonneau and sides will open and then the roof won't come up and the light blinks. I've heard it might be the e-brake switch, the rocker dash switch or the hydraulic fluid.

The top opens and closes with the key in the drivers door. Turn the key to the right and the windows come down followed closely by the top. Turn to the left to lock the car, close the top and then the windows. It might be vice versa but either way, it works. It is also explained in the owner's manual. I'm betting it is the ebrake switch but I don't know how to bypass it. If mine were a fluid problem, I wouldn't expect it to work with either method.

Yeah. Looked in the manual last night and tried that. TOnneau opens and then just noise from the motor but no motion. Must be a fluid problem. Why don't you just replace your e-brake switch? I have the same problem. Except, with mine the tonneau and sides will operate, but once they are open, the top won't come up. Does that sound like the hydraulic fluid or a switch? Someone on another forum told me the e-brake switch could be bad. I've ordered a new one (they're cheap enough) but haven't received it yet. Any thoughts would be welcome.
