  1. Just a thought. Is it necessary to remove the wheel carrier in order to remove the complete strut from the wheel well? By doing so, the strut would fall vertically downwards and come out of the wheel well without any problems.

    I cannot seem to find the solution to this problem which I imagine is a very obvious one!

  2. OK so just had a go and unfortunately failed..

    I jacked the car, removed wheel, removed caliper and rotor, removed any of the smaller pieces connected to the strut, removed the three nuts at the top of the strut and removed the ABS and brake lines out of the way.

    Problem was that I would not remove the strut (whole assembled mcpherson strut) from the wheel arch. I managed to push the strut down so that the three bolts at the top of the strut came through into the wheel arch area, however I could not go down much more. What is the part that support the lower part of the strut called? is that meant to be disassembled too? Is the spring meant to be compressed in order to remove it from the arch? I tried to compress it however it is not easy as it is conical shaped and just about has three coils that can be 'grabbed' by the compressor on one side, and two on the other. Definitely not enough to get it out of the arch. I am obviously missing something basic here and i cannot put my finger on it.

    I would really appreciate some help with this. I am not sure whether it makes a difference but it is a 4S so the front wheels are driven. I do not know if this changes anything with the strut removal.
