I checked with my local guys and there is no indication that the NC supplier did any work to the heads and the local folks say they didn't. What's involved with the heads and what's a best guess cost to work on them?

Another question along the same lines as above.
2001 996 C2 Cab Carrera 911
I had a rebuilt engine supplied by a NC supplier and installed by a local Indy which failed in the first 500 miles. Since the orignal supplier didn't supply a rebuilt engine for over 9 months, the local Indy at their expense sent the engine out had Cylinders 1 and 5 rebored and they reassembled and replace all the damaged parts destroyed in the engine supplied by the NC supplier. My question is that since I have gotten it back last July I have put about 3,000 miles on the car and have seen an average use of oil of about 1 liter per 300 miles. We have replaced the oil separator which didn't help the problem. I have had the oil tested and the results have shown no abnormalities.
Occasionally on startup there is blue smoke coming out of the passenger side tail pipe. During the initial warm-up of 3-5 minutes upon acceleration blue smoke can be seen occasionally coming from the passenger side tail pipe. After warming up I do not see any smoke even on hard acceleration or deceleration. However the oil has to be going somewhere. No warning lights, car runs good, no unusual noises.
Could this be worn valve guides or a problem with the rings? Any ideas?

Doesn't look like a 996 engine serial number. 996 engine serial numbers should start with 66; then a letter or number; followed by 5 numbers.
Thanks Loren

I have seen a lot of post on engine serial numbers but I am still having troubles.
Can anyone tell me what this means 93862103
or
Have I got some irrelevant set of numbers?
Thanks in advance

Loren, I have the coolant drained from the engine since I am replacing the water pump. Is this the time to replace the engine temperature sensor, while there is no coolant in the engine? Am I correct assuming the sensor measures the water temperature?
Thank you

Thanks Loren this is great!

Does anyone have a picture of the location of the water temperature sensor for a 2001 996 Carrera Cab?

This is not quite the same thing, the key cylinder is normally held into the housing with a spring loaded tab, it may be getting weak or was not seated properly. If just the plastic switch was changed out last time this would not have been apart, but if a new cylinder assy with switch was changed(the only way available from porsche with old style switch) this would have been traded out into the new cylinder... if you put the key to position two(right before start/crank position) pull on the key and if cylinder comes out again, push it straight back in and take in to have it looked at, if it doesn't come out it's probably ok.
Not that the other post are incorrect, yours seems to make more sense based on what I have read and your comments. It seems that I recall that I did push the cylinder in and there was a click just before it started working again. I will keep any eye on it. Thanks for your post.

that sounds to me like your ignition switch assembly going bad....
mine would do odd things intermittently, no headlights, no a/c, etc...
I swapped it out and have had no problems since.

I replace the plastic ignition switch last summer after I had trouble removing the key. Is this the same thing?

2001 C2 Cab. 58K At this weekend’s DE event I went to startthe car and the key rotated, in both directions, in the cylinder withoutengaging. After a few frantic moments Ifinally jostled the steering wheel around and the key engaged. Any ideas on what the issue may havebeen. Rest of the day the key workedfine but I was gentle. Thank you.

Porsche 6-Speed Shift Knob and Boot With Ring
Add the "S" style to your Porsche interior! This is the 6-speed shift knob for a Carrera 996 or Boxster S. The shift boot has a silver base and comes in black leather with dark grey stiching. The knob features a gold Porsche crest and has a glossy silver/black leather handle. All interior color matches, select below.
P-9x642498115Regular price: $489.00Sale price: $399.95
I found this at Import Auto Parts and Accessories if anyone is interested. I will try for a simpler (read this as less expensive ;) ) solution for now.

On a 2001 911 C2 Cab.
How do you remove the fuel door in order to replace the hinge?

Does anyone know where to get the plastic trim piece for the leather boot trim on shifter? Or a Porsche part number?
2001 911 C2 Cab short shift kit, leather boot held on at console by what appears to be a plastic trim piece. To release the trim I simply pry it up, its only held on by 4 clips. Boot and trim are separate from the knob and shifter post.
