  1. Hi everbody, I just bought a beautiful 2003 996 c4s. I live in an apartment complex and am worried about sun damage, rain etc. I was thinking about setting up a car canopy or building a car port but im not sure how long it would take for the apt management to ask me to take it down haha. How do you feel about protecting it outside with a normal car cover? I was worried about the cover getting dirty and scratching the paint, breathability issues etc. Also does anybody know of any cheap and good quality car canopys?

    thanks

So if you were me would you?

A buy a car canopy (rig it up to mount on pavement at your apartment complex lol)

    B use a car cover

C just keep it clean and keep a nice wax coat??

I have similar circumstances and I went with the cover. Haven't used it much, lately.

  2. So does the engine crank over or no?

Engine cranks over right away when the starter finally catches. It seems that outside temps make a difference, e.g. when I go to work early in the morning it's been pretty muggy in NE and warm the last few days (above 70*) and it might take a couple of tries turning the key to start the car. (and I'm off). Going back home in the afternoon has been a breeze. When it's cooler out it takes longer. Sometimes it seems as though I need to hold the key in the "start" position as if the plunger on the starter solenoid would need to be energized to overcome some sort of resistance ( I'm speculating). Then again, maybe it's a wire problem, or could it be related to the communication between key and immobilizer ( assuming that's how that works/?)

Being stuck in the parking lot of my local supermarket failing to start my car is what I'm contending with.

    (amongst other items...)

  3. I have a 01 Boxster S that has a strange rear spolier issue. The rear spoiler raises and lowers as it should automatically and manually, however on startup the light is on untill the car is moved. Once the car registers MPH the light disappears without issue. Is this normal? Any sensors or micro switches to check. Any help would be appreciated.

    Thank You,

    Andrew

    Normal.

Had the same thing happen to me on a '99 996 when driving away from a dealership. They said to drive it a few feet and the light would go off. So it did;... seems normal.

  4. Hi All,

I believe I've exhausted the posts covering ignition but I am still experiencing starting problems on my 1999

C2 coupe with tiptronic. Maybe someone here can provide further help. Shortly after I bought the car in January of this year the trouble starting it began occurring. I cleaned and lubricated the lock which seemed to make a difference for a moment, I bought a new switch which seemed to make a difference for a few days. Then recently I upgraded with a new ignition housing assembly from suncoast ( part #996 347 017 07 )

with the aid of R&R instructions from this forum. ( great instructions, btw ) And I had really hoped that that would cure it. However I am still stuck with a "getaway car" that won't start until I am almoast ready to give up trying ( same results with both keys I've got). Now I'm wondering if there might be a problem with the wiring in the plug connector or maybe the immobilizer or maybe the starter itself.

Any ideas...? If it is the starter I understand that it's tricky getting to, is there a link for it on RennTech?

I really would appreciate your help in solving this mystery. TxIA Oliver.

  5. Hello all. I have a 2002 996TT, 6 speed manual with X50 and FVD chip, FVD 100 cell cats and FVD exhaust. In first, second, and sometimes in third gear at wide open throttle, engine seems to lose power around 4,500 rpm. The sensation feels like if the engine is misfiring or hesitating, but I am still accelerating, just not as fast. My boost gauge still shows 0.9 bar when this happens and it does not drop off until I lift on the gas. The normal boost is 1.0 bars at WOT. In higher gears on the freeway, it seems to accelerate smoothly and consistantly at WOT. One time in fifth gear at full WOT on the freeway, the engine sputtered a few times before I lefted on the gas. I have 68,000 miles on the car and put new plugs in at 60,000. I am not getting any check engine lights. I have checked all hoses and they all seem fine. The dealer checked out the car and it had no fault codes. They thought it was the MAF sensor so they put in a new one and it still had the same issues so we put the original one back in. They are still researching and trying to contact FVD. I also have new billet blow off values and tried 100 octane race fuel. Being in Colorado with higher altitude and low oxygen, I thought it might be a air/fuel issue. Any ideas? Can it be a traction control issue? No traction control light comes on. Oxygen sensor? Sometimes at start-up and gear changes, I do get a puff of white smoke from my tail pipes. And, there seem to be a minor oil leak (see previous post). I also suspect maybe a waste gate issue but at this point I am lost. If anyone has any suggestions, please let me know. Thank you in advance!

HiJack, I am not a mechanic nor experienced in anything worldwild, but what you describe sounds like Turbo/EGR related issues. You might be on track with that waist gait talk...there might be some black smoke instead if someone were behind you long enough to report back
