Hey, CT, how about an update on the gas smell problem? What was the fix?

Don't know how close an '05 is to an '04 but a gas cap code on mine is closer to an P0456 than the P0441. So wvicary is spot-on with the EVAP call. Mine just threw the P0456 last weekend so I had the cap checked. The garage said it probably just didn't get tightened after the last fill-up. They cleared the codes and they haven't come back (touch wood). Good luck with the A/C testing and please let us know the outcome!

Does anyone know how much lateral movement is normal when pushing/pulling propshaft at centre bearing? Getting dug dug dug sometimes at low speed and suspect bearing on way out
I'm going out on a limb here, CP, and say zero or close to it. When mine went out on my '04 CTT it first felt and sounded like a flat tire while driving. Then a day or two later it started making a banging sound under the center console. It goes bad really fast. So don't wait for that wobble to turn to sudden death...it will. What year is your rig?

Perhaps not in the US-version?
where are you you located, 'beer? Not in USA? So you are not buying a US version?

Well I had ordered the seals/gasket for the cam housing and all 8 coils. Just one spark plug, they told me the same thing about the rest still being good for anohter 30K miles. The thing is that Sunset sold me coils ending in -07 not 05. Did he sell me the wrong ones? It is for an 04 Turbo.
Now I am looking at the engine and the though of doing the gasket replacement seems daunting. There is very little space in the back to work in, I called the dealer and the dont drop the engine. Don't know whether to try or call my Indy.
Check your gmail account, CT. I sent you a couple of pics I took when I had to do this job on mine.

On the issue of the coolant tubes, do they start leaking (or any other form of acting up) before they decide to self-destruct?
Thanks
The first sign I got was a low coolant warning on the display. I would add water and it would run out under the engine bay as fast as I added it. It will be sudden and severe when it happens to your car. Admittedly it never overheated past 3/4 on the guage even though I drove it for a couple of days like that, just adding water frequently. Not sure why.
Hope this helps.

Does anyone else have a CTT without Alcantara? After being in one with it I feel gypped.
I have an '04 CTT w/o alcantara that originally was purchased in Michigan and feel gypped the same way you do, especially after hearing from you it was deleted. My friend has a black CTT with the wood interior trim and alcantara and I really like it. Upgrading would seem like an uneconomical solution. My headliner is a light bluish-gray material like polyester.

Steve, I would have the coils checked for cracks even though you didn't mention the check engine light or a misfire. Also have the driveshaft bearings checked for wear. And was the coolant pipe repair already done? And that pesky ventilation system... if your's isn't in top condition have them replace the actuator solenoids under the dash. Mostly all the usual stuff everyone who owns an '04 with over 50K mileage already has done. And my personal experience is that PCNA would not discuss any of these issues with me after my car reached 50K.

My set of Pirelli Rossos barely lasted 12 months and maybe 14,000 miles. Fantastic grip and handling....terrible mileage. And no mileage warranty either!!

Is there any benefit in weighing our cars on digital scales? Measuring your car's weight distribution will generally set a baseline for establishing a plan for improving your handling. Will this really tell you how to change your alignment for better handling?

Did they let you keep the rebate check for your trouble?
I'd love to drive a CTT with the Sport Michelins. I can't imagine a better ride than what I have now.

Guma, I remember reading a thread here about having the dealer retrofit a plug so that the trailer lights will work. At least I think that is the issue. Be sure to ask your dealer about this so that it can be done before you return.

I have had really good luck with a red top Optima for 12 years and holding in my '78 Datsun turbo Z which I drive much less since I got the CTT. Admittedly there isn't much comparison since the Z has very little parasitic loss...probably only the DFI computer, stereo and clock.
I would also have your vehicle checked for unusual electrical system drains by a qualified shop.

My .02 on the T-pipes is to replace them now. Don't wait. That is also the opinion of my indie garage who replaced mine and I'm glad I went with his advice. It's just good insurance.

So now it's my turn. 2,050.00 for part and labor.
I asked about these T pieces and according the the service writer via the tech these parts are rubber and they have not yet experienced a problem with them. He continued that they are on the backside of the engine and they didn't have any info on cost to replace. (I'm not kidding) He said they would have to just look at how long it would take to "get to them" and estimate labor. He kept telling me that these parts are not plastic but rubber. Further stated that the intake manifold would not have to be replaced to access them if they needed to be replaced later.
Should I keep pressing?
I had my coolant pipes replaced 13 months ago due to coolant leakage. Just when I thought life was good...Bang......1 month ago my car dropped all of its coolant on the ground.Investigation revealed that there were two plastic T-pieces in the coolant system at the back of the engine, one of which had cracked.
The cracked T-piece was replaced along with the 2nd T-piece for preventative purposes. (CPO warranty picked up the tab )
Dealer tells me that they are starting to see an increased number of cars with these T pieces cracking.
Looks like they will be another money spinner for them.
I am not sure if these T pieces are installed on the non turbo Cayennes. They may not be an issue for the normally aspirated.
The part numbers for the plastic T pieces are: 955 106 323 50 and 948 106 035 51.
They are identified as "water hose" in the PET manual.
Get these changed without hesitation if you happen to be doing coolant pipe surgery on your Cayenne.
I had this problem with my Cayenne S. It is not limited to the turbos only.

Guys, does anyone know of a source for a used driver's side (right-side?) grille insert for my '04 turbo? I lost it somewhere in the snowstorm we had here in north Texas a few weeks ago. Searched the roadways but never found it. A new one s $100 from Pelican!!!

The pipe in the pic. is a ventilation/breather pipe, the brittle plastic water pipes/connectors are situated on the rear of the engine (between the engine and the firewall)
I have those parts as well and can take pics of them if someone needs an ID. The shop replaced the vent/breather pipe as well as the plastic water pipes.

I second that! My indie shop did replace both T-pipes (they are rigid plastic, not rubber hose) and the vent tubes. Here is a quick pic of the vent/breather for ID...
I have the individual parts for the T-pipe replacement and can take more pictures if someone wants a more visual detail.

Geoff, I ordered a set of the Michelins today coming from Tennessee to DFW, should be here by Friday. Will let you know if they materialize. Thanks for the positive input. I talked to my local tire guy for a while about both brands and ultimately decided to pay the extra based on what I read of experiences here in the forum. They did come very close to matching Tirerack's online price.
My tires came in today, exactly as I ordered them, so they are out there. I got mine from Discount Tire. They told me there are two more sets of the 275/45-19 somewhere in the US according to the Discount guy. I just got back from having them mounted and feel a lot more confident about driving in rain/mud/snow. Now I can plan my next trip!!

Geoff, if you haven't already purchased, my local tire guy told me about a new Continental tire called the Extend Contact DWS. The 19" is priced right at $235 per tire here in DFW. He compares it favorably with the Michelin.
Tim - thanks for the recommendation. I purchased the tires back in mid-November (and already received the $100 rebate). Still no tires. I've got the original Continental tires still on the Cayenne, with 26+K miles on them, and still not at the wear bars. The tires wear well, but were nothing special. I'll look into the Extend Contact DWS tires, but based on my Continental tire experience with both my Cayenne and Boxster, and compared to the Michelin Pilot Sports on my cars, I'm less than impressed with the way Porsches perform with Continental tires. The Extend Contact DWS tires aren't listed on the N-rated Cayenne tires at http://www.porsche.com/usa/accessoriesands...tsanddownloads/ - I also drank too much punch, and am inclined to go with N-rated tires, at least as long as the car is still under warranty, based on my discussions with the head mechanic at my dealer (I also still put Mobil 1 0w40 in my cars, so what does that say about me?). I'll do some research on the tires and report back. I'm leaning away from the Michelin Latitude Sports, since they don't do great under about 40°F on the off chance the Cayenne sees cold weather any time in the next year or two
Geoff, I understand your hesitation at repeating a mistake with Continental but the guy assures me this is a new design with reinforced sidewalls to handle the weight of the Cayenne and a 40,000 mi warranty (very unusual for any tire that will fit our car). So I'm inclined to listen to the pro and consider it. He will take the tires back if after 30 days I don't like them. He also assures me they are great in snow and mud. I don't think the tire is listed because it was just released into the market. I 'll keep you posted on my decision as well.

I ordered some 19" Michelin Latitude Tour HP tires from my local tire store back in November, and told them no rush before mid-December. The store manager ordered them anyway, and found 3 in the US. Unfortunately, I need 4 tires. I've checked with the store ever 2 weeks for the last month and keep getting the story the tires aren't being manufactured right now. These are all season mud and snow rated tires.
The manager offered to split the difference between the cost of the Latitude Tour HP and the Latitude Sport (the Sport is about $30 more per tire). The Latitude Sport is a higher performance tire, but not recommended for snow or ice (which I've only driven the Cayenne in once). Anyone here have the Latitude Sports? If yes, how do they drive in the rain (lots expected here for the next month)? I expect almost anything will be better than my original Continental tires, now with around 27K miles on. I would like to have tires I can take to the snow, but not sure when the Latitude Tour tires will be back in supply.

I hate to toss a grenade into this very informative discussion but does any one have an opinion on AMSOIL? They have a 5W-40 European Engine Oil that claims to meet ACEA requirements.
I stated earlier that I have used Amsoil 20W-50 in my 300hp Nissan turbo motor, but I did not say how long. I have used it for over 10 years now ( I am not a distributor...I order directly from the warehouse) and am very happy with it. I also use the 0W-30 in my MGB and have used it for close to 8 years now. I am totally sold on their products, especially the oil filters, as well as Wix, but that is another thread for another time. I am going to switch to Amsoil for my CTT unless I find some damning evidence of catastrophic failures. Motul is great but very expensive and harder to find in DFW than Amsoil. I have not found a direct shipper for Motul. I should also state that the only reason I strayed away from Amsoil is that I won a $50 Motul gift certificate at a local car show.

So..I need to change spark plugs on my 06 S...Why and what are the differences between the 14.00 plugs from Porsche and the 5.00 ones from NGK...and should all coils be replaced at the same time...
Thanks
is your engine misfiring? It wouldn't hurt to check the coils while they are out. All 8 of mine had hairline cracks where the spark plug goes into the coil housing. You need to look closely; mine were hard to spot at first and the indie shop that did my coolant tube replacement failed to spot the cracks (??!!!!) when they had them out. I did change to NGK and noticed my wallet is a little heavier. Fuel mileage is better (15.2 vs 13.8) , but it would be with any new plug, I bet! It still launches like a missle. I have a '04 CTT.
