  1. Does anyone have any comments on Royal PurpleÉ It was recommended to me for my 996TT. Prior to using the Royal Purple, I was using Motul. Oil consumption was higher using the Motul and I subjectively thought I had more valve train noise. I have not performed any oil analysis and as such can make no comment on performance. Has anyone elseÉ

    Page two indicates that the 0W40 "meets or exceeds" ACEA A3/B3-04 warranty requirements and the 15w40 meets or exceeds ACEA A2-96 and A3-02 warranty requirements.

    I grant that this does not mean that the oils have been tested and received approval by the European sanctioning body.

    I`m still using Mobil 1 in my 09 CTTS. Back in my Datsun 510, 240, and 280z days, I swore by Mobil 1 and Slick50.

    Good to see another Datsun/Porsche turbo guy on this board, Doug. I still have my old 280 but now it also has a turbo motor in it. I got addicted to the spool-up and bypass sounds, and of course the power! I don't think the discussion of oil viscosity here applies to turbo engines. I was told to use the 20-50 Amsoil in my Z and the 0-40 in my CTT. I would love to use the Amsoil in both cars but have not researched it for Porsche. Sorry, I know nothing about Royal Purple.

  2. Has anyone noticed that Motul lubricants carry the Porsche-approved designation? I have used both Motul 0-40 and Amsoil 20-50 in my Nissan turbo car for years and just noticed the Motul actually carries the ACEA approval. For those of us who love throwing gobs of money at our cars here is yet another way to do that. I have been looking for something other than Mobil 1 and found it by accident in my own garage!

    Motul 8100X-CESS and X-Clean are P-approved, but are only API SL and SM respectively. SL is bare minimum IMO. Motul X-Max is not on the P-list.

    I have been using very expensive unapproved, but terrific Motul 300V, but will probably go to Castrol Syntec this year. From their website:

    SAE 5W–40:

    is engineered specifically to meet the Volkswagen engine warranty requirements, exceeding VW 502 00 and 505 00. Exceeds all car and light truck manufacturer’s warranty requirements for the protection for gasoline, diesel and turbocharged engines where API SL, SJ, SH, CF or CD is recommended. Exceeds European ACEA: A3, B3, B4, MB 229.3, MB 229.1, BMW LL-98, Porsche A40. Meets the engine protection requirements of Volvo, BMW, Mercedes Benz and ILSAC GF-3 for API Certified Gasoline Engine Oils.

    Mike, the Motul product I was talking about is the 8100 E-tech 0W40. I went out to the garage to grab a bottle. It says it's ACEA ratings are A3/B3/B4 and API is SJ/CF. THe Porsche approval is 229.3

    I hope this clears up more of my original thought. So Motul may not be acceptable for all Porsches. Anyone know?

  4. all true. I called PNCA about the cracked coils. Thank God nothing melted/burned. They said too bad, so sad. Out of warranty when I called. No telling how long the coil problem went unresolved by previous owner. I had the intermittant misfire ... hard to detect. One indie said it might be a broken vacuum line he found while doing the coolant tube repair. I asked him to replace the coils while he had it apart but he balked. Probably wanted to charge more later when I found the misfire was still there.

  5. Stealthtt, please let me know how you make out with the drive shaft change. My car is still under warranty!!! I called PCNA national and registered my problem. They are going to have a National Tech check out my car. I am guessing it is the shaft as well .... but who knows.

    Let me know what happens with you and I will pass this info to the Nat. Tech.

    Also I am curious what they are going to charge you for parts and labor.

    What they charge will make you glad you have a warranty, Andy!! The shaft (presumably Porsche, not VW) was $775. Labor varies and mine was done as a rush job on a Saturday afternoon and included the time and gas to go get the part. With tax it came to a little over $1K. Next time I will know to ask for the VW part. I had a private shop do the job.

  6. I bought a set of the newer oem cayenne 18" wheels ... the ones that look similar to the GTS wheels, on ebay. I was going to use them for winter wheels. Even though I had my 19" speed force balances with new tires, I decided to put yokohama goelander HTS on the 18's. I had them road forced balanced as well. I figure I will give it one more shot to fix the problem, and then just sell the car.

    First test drive tonight ... I think the vibration is gone. Can these cars actually be that sensitive to wheel balancing. That is rediculous ... and a major design flaw. I will drive it to work in the morning and confirm it is fixed.

    Got my fingers crossed for you, Andy. Sorry to hear you want to sell. It is a magnificient automobile when everything is working right.

    Are the wheels proprietary to the Cayenne? They don't fit other models? I don't know about wheel balancing...when I bought mine it had brand new Pirelli P-Zeros with fresh balancing all the way around. I love driving it in the worst Texas weather...rock solid.

  7. I have a 2005 ctt with 10k miles on it. It has 1 year left of warranty plus cpo (2 years). I have the vibration!! F'ing annoying. It has been to the dealer several times, wheels speed forced balanced, new tires, everything. Still there. I am at a loss of what to do next.

    hey carrerac3, get them to put it on a lift (be sure they turn off the suspension first!!) and they will find the problem. It is the rubber carrier bearing near the middle of the drive shaft. That is the part they call the cardan. They will find that it is worn. You are very fortunate to have an extended warranty on you ctt!!

  8. At what milage does it usually start to happen? I bought a used 04 CS from a Porsche dealer and it is on 5s Km now, it had a alignment problem when I first get it, then I rotated the tires and it is much straighter. Is it a sign of the vibration problem coming?

    if you have an '04 model you have the problem. It is a defect from the factory. The cardan shaft will fail. Some vehicles exhibit the trouble sooner than others depending on how much you like to hammer the boost guage. If your Cayenne is not glass-smooth over normal roads, if it even hints at any vibration, your shaft is failing. The dealer calls it a wear-out item. You should still take the time to report it to PCNA. Even though it is out of warranty the factory needs to be aware of our discontent with their unwillingness to back up their customer satifaction claims.
