  1. Hi. The 2002+ 996 has a pretty different Variocam system than the 99-01 models. The later is really simple. i was just wondering if anyone with a 2002+ model has any probs related to the Variocam system there?
  2. Hi. I know (and appreciate) there are a lot of good DIYs, etc. on this site, but is there no workshop or service manual i can buy?
  3. Hi. i tried the scousers vin decoder but it said both 6-speed manual and 5-speed auto.
  4. Thx folks. Does anybody have a pic of this alternate rear jack point(s)? This suspension crossmember?
  5. Hi. 'looking for the rear jack point. I saw a thread saying it was ok to use the engine (not oil pan though). Keep in mind, i would be putting jackstands under the two, rear factory jack points so I can't use them as jack points.
  6. Thanks. Are those electromagnetic valves, item 1 in the ValveTrain picture you posted? If not (I don't think they are), where are they located? I think this variocam system seems like a pretty good, simple design.
  7. Thanks Loren. So only the intake cams are adjusted. ok. But how are they adjusted? I don't think I see any solenoids in that picture.
  8. Hi. So there are four camshafts right? two on each side of the engine? 4 valves per cylinder? I'm familiar with how BMW's VANOS system works: pretty simple: uses the engine oil as a hydraulic fluid (controlled by a solenoid) to move both the intake and exhaust cams around. Does porsche have something similar (is that what variocam is)? If so, are there two systems? One on each side of the engine?
  9. Hi. So what additional work is required to change the tubes (and O rings) if one is about to change spark plugs?
  10. ah, found this: http://www.renntech.org/forums/index.php?s...83&hl=reman
  11. Hi. I heard there was some serial number somewhere, and that it had a certain letter or number in it if it was reman?
  12. Hi. thinking of getting a 2001 C2 Tip. Let's say it needs an RMS seal replacement and i buy or make the tool. Question is, how do-able is it to remove the Tip tranny? Any DIYs out there for that?h
  13. Hi. 'thinking about getting a 1999 or 2000 996 C2 or C4. I wanna learn about the suspension. Are they any technical drawings around? For example, are the front control arms aluminum? What about the rear?
  14. Hi. thinking of getting a 996. As for the Carrera 4 VS. the Carrera, what's involved maintence wise? I'm familiar with the VW/Audi Haldex system, is this the same? Cause that thing requires fluid/filter change every 20K miles.
  15. Hi. Thinking of getting a 986 Tiptronic. Are there any model years with more problems than others?
  16. Hi. 'thinking of getting a 996. I guess 1999 was, kind of, the first year for this model. Are there any known issues with the 99 that are fixed in the 2000 or 2001? I know about the IMS and RMS issues but those seem to incl all years.
  17. Hi. 'thinking of getting a 1999-2002 996. Are any of those particular model years more susceptible to the RMS and/or IMS failure than others?
  18. Thx. That's good to hear about the tip (cause the one I buy has to be a tiptronic) and the IMS. Does the same also hold for the tip and the RMS?
  19. Google 996 and IMS. I wouldn't be overly concerned -- but I would make myself well educated so that I knew what I was getting involved with. They also occasionally have water pump problems. m I see. Thx. Yeah the IMS/RMS failure looks pretty scary. I think water pump issues happen with every car, but that seems relatively easy to change out.
  20. Hi. 'thinking of getting a tiptronic 2000-2002 911 Carrera or Carrera 4. I've owned VWs, Audi, and a BMW 3 series before and done all the work myself on them in my garage. I *plan* to do the same to the Porsche. I see a lot of DIYs here and things look do-able. Are there any major problems with these cars (e.g. tiptronic)? Any help is appreciated.
  21. Hi. 'looking to buy a 2001 911 Carrera. i found one that's a "Carrera 4" tiptronic. Do all or none of them have turbo? i actually would rather not have turbo. a little more complicated to fix...
