  1. I have a question regarding a strange noise of my 2000 C2 Cab.

When I started my car and let it warms up in the morning (car at park) I hear a strange noise (don't know how to explain) in the engine bay. It seems like the noise is coming from the motor or pump (?) at the lower left corner of the the engine bay. This strange noise happened only for about 1-2 minutes and it went away and engine runs as normal as its temperature reach toward 180.

Do you know what is this strange noise and is it normal or it indicates something is going wrong? In addition, what is the device (motor or pump) located at he lower left corner of the engine bay?

Thank you in advance for your help.

  2. I'm looking at an '01 Carrera 4 Cab w/Tip on a Caddie dealer's lot. No service records. The odo says 23K miles and the CarFax history showed 21K in 08 and nothing with mileage data before that. I have some concern because of wear of "soft" parts. I think it has an aftermarket replacement soft top. The driver's seat leather looks like my Audi's with 90K. The rear window is opaque, and the big oval panel on the dash top is curly from sun exposure. I think that can be replaced. But these things could be because it wasn't garage-kept. The body is clean (color: silver). It drove beautifully. Engine and Tip trans were very crisp and it sounded great. Seat of the pants when driving says the odometer is right, visible wear says not. Is there any way to know if the mileage has been altered? If I decide to proceed, I'll get an inspection. Dealer asking $32.5K. I'm thinking mid-20s. I'm in So. California but not the LA area.

I would pass on this car and look for another one. There are so many cars like this one on the market and in my opinion offering mid-$20Ks for this car is to much .

Just want to share with you that I bought my 2000 C2, Cab, 6speed, 54K miles, like new conditions with brand new engine and clutch (installed by Russnak) at 47k miles in Nov 2008 for $24K.

    Keep looking....good luck!

  3. Can some one share a DIY on how to replace a fuel filter on 996tt , i highly appreciate it.

MY please...if it is 02+, the fuel filter is part of the fuel pump and is not normally changed.

May be it is a dumb question; what is MY (like MY01 or MY02) stands for? :(

    Thanks

Model Year...better for identifying the car specs as the purchase year could be different.

    Got it. Thanks!

  5. The key fob battery is good, tested on voltmeter. I unfortunately don't have a spare... Came with only 1 key... Pulled the shroud off of passenger wheel well and looked for cable to get into trunk, opened trunk and disconnected battery and put back on and wallah!!! key fob now works? I don't know why but i guess i "woke" the car up?

I need to get a spare key, but still wondering why this key does not open door manually or glove box. Could the previous owner change the ignition and key?

I suggest that you should clean the battery terminals (+ and -) as well as the matting connectors on the cables using battery termial wired brush tool. It seems like there was corrosion film that insulated the battery cable connector and the battery terminal. During re-installation, make sure you do couple twist and push motions to ensure tight fit then tighten the connector nut.

  6. I have a slope drive way and her are steps that I used to changed oil on my 00 C2 last time.

I put the Rhino ramps on the driveway slope and backed rear wheels of the car onto the ramp. This gives the car very much level.

Drained all or as much oil as I can. Removed and replaced oil filter. Filled in about 8 to 8 1/2 quarts of oil then drove the car off the ramp to a level driveway.

Turned off the engine and went get a cold beer. Finished the beer then check the oil level. Added oil to spec. and test drove the car.

  7. Yeah, I had to sell my Carrera. But I feel fortunate to have had the opportunity to own one. When I was 15 years old, I had a Car and Driver Magazine, which had an article about the new 930 Turbo. I probably held on to that Magazine for a couple of years, owning a 911 became my life long dream. I remember when my son was a little guy, and we were paying almost all the money we had to formula. diapers and daycare, I saw a white 911 pass while driving my beat up Ford Aerostar second hand mini van. I thought to myself, "One day, it is gonna happen".

Well, I had a second kid, my Daughter and everything was going well. I ended up with a good job in IT, my wife has a good job, we are homeowners and we have the best kids anybody could ask for. My son is now 19 and off in the Army, freshly married and getting ready to head to Afghanistan. My Daughter is 16, and a gifted Academic, she had actually skipped grades in shcool, and started full time College at 15 years old... almost Doogie Houser like.

The opportunity came, the stars lined up and the win blew the right way, and I was able to buy a sweet black 2002 911, and it was everything I dreamed it would be.. oh what a car! Everybody knew this was THE car for dad, the kids were extra careful in the garage and everybody respected the fact that it was my life long dream car.

So my daughter got her drivers license, and she is such a good kid, I took the stretch and bought her a very good used Toyota Corolla. My son, who is living with his new wife at Ft. Bragg in NC is having some tough times, so I have been sending him some extra money and whatnot. As it turns out now, his wife is pregnant and due right as he is scheduled to leave for Afghanistan for a year. I offered to let his wife come live with us while he is gone, I think she will. But the big problem comes in the fact that they only own one car, a Chevy Colorado standard cab pickup which he put no money down and they are horribly upside in. I am sure you see where this is going, they have no place for a car seat, basically no money, so they need a car, and a good one. So, I sold the Porsche... Yes, the 911 is gone.

I was able to buy a second hand Mini Cooper for myself, and a very good Toyota Rav4 for my son's new family with the proceeds of the sale. I miss the car, but I guess the part that makes me the saddest is the fact that our soldiers, not just my son, but most all of our enlisted men, are living below the poverty line. My son qualifies for Food Stamps and WIC.

As great as it was to own my dream car for a year, I gotta say, you really don't have to look too far to find the real treasures in your life.

    So... Lets go Motoring?

    IMG_0171.jpg

All I can say is your are a great father and please send my salute to your son; one of our soldiers.

As I read your story I was affraid that your dream car end up with a blown engine but it is good that it end up in the good hands of another Posche lovers.

Well, some dreams come and go some comes and stay. The most important thing is we enjoy our dream when it came and not suffer when it gone.

I wish your dream will come true again shortly.

  8. Old habits die hard, especially if you have good results. Twice a year I put injector cleaner in the engine and run the car the following way. After the car is warmed up (180 temp) I run the RPM's to 4000 and keep them at 4000 for two minutes, afterwards I run to 5000 RPM's for one minute and lastly I run to 6000 RPM's in every gear possible for the last part of the workout. This is not a track car so I do this to give the Porche a good workout. For those folks that track their Porches I see no benefit to this routine (they have other problems to deal with). Porches love to be driven continuously and methodically. I firmly believe if you take care of them they take care of you. ($$$)

    Jorge

What kind of injector cleaner do you use? I am afraid of using the none OEM (not Porsche approved) brand which may cause more damage than good.

    Thanks!

  9. Check the plastic window. Make sure the outside seam around the window still intact and does not show any sign of separation. Replacing plastic window can cost you around $700 and the new top can cost you at least three time more. Make sure the top comes up and down smoothly.

Make a habit to look at engine, check oil level, water level at least one a week or at each gas fill up. Always check the floor right under the engine for any sign of leak drops.

Not saying the car is bad but it is better to see sign of issue before it is too late.

My is 2000 C2 Cab and had new engine put in at 47K miles. I hope this will not happen to other Porsche new and current owners.

Have fun with your new car : B)

  11. Interesting thread on the "reliability" of the 996 engine. I have owned several Porches in my days and currently drive daily a 04 996 C4S. We all desire reliability even though some of us drive the living hell out of these engines shamelessly. I too desire longevity and reliability and usually follow the following guidelines. Never drive the car below 2000 RPM's and shift at 3000 RPM's when cold (below 180 Temp) and 4000 RPM's once warm. This is for everyday driving in most conditions and I will open her up to 5000-6000 RPM's occasionally to get the lungs breathing properly. This has worked well for me since new and my 996 has performed flawlessly. In looking at objective data pick up the Consumer Report Used Car Guide and you will see some interesting data regarding the 04 996. It is a consumer report "recommended" model year for reliability based on all the parameters reviewed. Not bad for a Porche.

    Jorge

So, this is how I understand your guideline:

    1. Never drive the car below 2000 RPM's.

    2. Shift at 3000 RPM when cold and 4000 RPM's when warm.

    3. Once awhile drive at 5000 - 6000 RPM's (watch for cop) or rev it up to 5000-6000? If revving then how long to keep it at 5000-6000 RPM's.

This is really interesting guideline. One of the Porsche Tech told me that don't drive the Porsche like a Camry or Accord. Drive it hard (not like racing) and occasionally drive it at 5000-6000 RPM's, of course at an open road and no CHP arround. This will make the car more reliable because this is the way the car was designed.

And based on this thread I see daily driving Porsches are more reliable than the low miles Porsches, especially the ones has mileage between 40K -50K.

MY is 2000 C2 and has new engine/cluth at 47K miles. It is now has 57K miles and I am driving it hard when ever I have a chance. :D

    Thanks for the guideline.

  12. I live in Corona. Did you get the 997 Porsche and what year?

    :D

I got the 2006 S Carrera. It had 18k miles when I got it. It's like a new car. Everything is spotless. I love it. It's an awesome car. Doing my first maintenance this weekend. Changing air filter and pollen filter. Only thing i have done to it is changed out the orange side markers to smoked and added the colored Porsche crest wheel caps.

It's metallic black so it keeps me busy keeping it perfect. :o

Not going to mod this one. Will keep for 2 years and then get the next gen

I am happy for you... :jump: Black is the most beautiful color for sport car. Can you share this pictures of your car with us?

  13. Thanks for the tip. I already spent about $80 for K/N filter and only used it only for about 2000 miles. For your suggestion, I like to put back the original air filter but in the same time don't want to waste my money that I spent on the K&N filter.

Do you think I could sell this K&N filter to someone or just toss it away? BTW, my 2000 C2 has new engine put in at 47K miles and now it has 57K miles. According to the Rusknak dealer in Pasadena, the original engine has porosity in the block which caused oil and water mixed up. I heard that you had big problem on your 2000 and sold it. Did your 2000 had the same problem of mine?

  14. What if we use the K&N air filter but do not apply their red oil on the filter element after cleaned? Would this be same as the stock filter in term of filtering and flow restriction?

The reason I ask because I replaced the stock filter with the K&N filter for over 2000 miles and have not noticed anything different.

In my opinion, it is time consuming and pain in the rear to clean the K&N filter. BTW, my car is 2000 C2.
