  1. I agree option number 3 because of a year newer and because it has 10K less miles. Its worth the extra coin

    Hi All,

I am trying to decide on which car to purchase and here are my options

    1. 2002 Targa, 60k miles, 2 owner care, purchase through dealer with CPO coverage. Nicely optioned $30,000.

    2. 2002 Targa, 40k miles, private party sale, 2 owner car (present owner 5 years), all service records, agreed to allow a PPI. Nicely optioned and in great shape. $29,000.

    3. 2003 Traga, 30k miles, independent dealer (have taken my other cars to them and trust them) 1 owner car, fully serviced and 30 day warranty. Nicely optioned and really like the color. $32,000.

Prices are bottom line firm. So my dilemma is which car should I go with?

    Thanks

  2. I think the car looks great. It has the hard to find aero kit and a ton of carbon fiber in the interior.

mileage is fine too. These cars are built to run. I wouldn't go a penny over 32K for it however. I think 30K is a bit high for a 2001 with 60K miles. I paid $37K for my 2003 with only 29,000 miles on it but it didn't have the aero kit but it does have a bigger displacement 3.6 vs. 3.4 liter. I would walk away if it goes any higher. You can find another car for that price which should be a little newer and lower mileage. Also I bought my 2003 over a year ago so the value should have come down. I would look for a 2003 if possible.

    Hi,

I am looking at this 2001 996 6 speed with almost 60k miles on it. Owner claims clutch, rear seal, and other work has recently been done by Monaco Motors in LA.

I am thinking about having Monaco perform a PPI on it. Ebay item number is 120473053338, and I would appreciate if someone could give me some advice, as to proceed with this offer or walk away because of something else...

My email is ca@stress.com....car is a no reserve with bids ending this Wednesday around 8 pm Central time.

    Thanks in advance.

  3. if the car is idling it should sit around 1.5 bar or so. You would notice that if you were under 3-4k RPMs that the oil pressure would be in the 4 bar range. If it is always high then you have an issue. My problem was that even idling the bar was at 2.5-3 bar and would go to 5 bar with ease when doing even light acceleration

My 996TT oil pressure reads right at the 4.0 mark at normal operating RPM's. Is that normal?
  4. I have the same issue with mine but vary rarely. Sometimes the radio while driving will flash Porsche and then it resets the radio. It clears all the settings for bass, treble etc. All the presets stay intact though. i am curious as well. I have a 2003 C2

    Need your informed opinions.

I got a 04 C4S, and the radio seems to be stuck at the startup process. Just a whirring sound and Porsche flashing on and off in the radio display. The radio seems to magically work when the car is left outside in warm weather. Is there a connection with warm weather and the MOST system in the car? The car only has 10,000 miles and the problem has been ongoing for the last 6 months. I intended to show the problem to the service tech my last visit, but of course the radio worked just fine while I was there.

    Thanks.

  5. **** it sounds like the seinfeld episode with the BMW and the smelly guy that was in it. I have no idea how to fix your issue. Are u sure its not coming from under the car? I would imagine an animal would have a very tough time getting in your sunroof

    Hey guys...

Strange one for you. Have a dead animal smell coming from the drivers side of the sunroof. Smells from the outside when open...really stinks up the car from the inside when the car is shut. Have looked under the sunroof interior and have shined a flashlight back thru where the roof slides, but don't see anything. Any ideas where a critter could have gotten to and died, or how to get a look at the whole interior of the roof (i.e remove the ceiling liner)? It's really bad!

    I have a '99 996 Coupe

  6. it might be as little of a problem as the oil pressure sender is bad. I would have them look at that first. They will need to hook up a manual guage to the car to see if there trully is something wron with your oil pressure or if it is the cheap oil pressure sender unit which is around a $80 part. I had the same issue with my 2003 c2. The oil pressure would consistently get to 5 bar at low RPM's and sometimes I would get an oil pressure failure to go along with it. I had the sender unit replaced and everything has been smooth sailing. I haven't had one other problem with the car. Overall it has been really reliable. Good luck but I bet it is nothing to really worry about.

I recently noticed something "possibly" odd about my 2003 911 C2. After the engine/oil is to normal operating temperature I noticed that oil pressure gauge is between 4 and 5 in six gear, about 2k rpm, around 65 MPH. I noticed that every so often I get a blip on the oil gauge. Essentially similar to a pulse or surge however not an extreme variation (maybe 1/4 mark up or down). I am wondering if this is normal or something to be concerned about as my CPO warranty runs out in 1 month.

    Thanks for any advice.

  7. They quoted 5 Grand for a cat and alternator? What else are they changing out? There is no way this work should cost 5 grand

    Hello..new renntech member..new 996 owner. Just recently acquired a 2002 C4S.

Unfortunately it's been a bit problematic although minor, but puts it off the road. One bad tire..wore through side wall..was run to low is our guess, and now a dead alternator. Thanks renntech for the DIYs..not to bad to get out.

The main issue we are having is the dealer tells us the cat warranty ended in April of 2009. Getting p0420 and p0430 errors..and it sounds rattly. C4S has about 102 000 km on it. The warranty book in car says 8years/130 000kms. I had to get book and show it to

service mamager..he photocopied it..said he would get back to us. Now at nearly $5000cdn to replace..warranty would be nice..lol.

So my questions is has anyone had experience getting this done under warranty..had problems getting it covered. Maybe shed some light on as to why it ended after only 7 years? Did a VIN check,it's a 2002..lol. Near as I can tell from

hours of searching, seems 8yrs/130 000kms is a federally mandated emissions warranty, same in Canada as US.

    Thanks

  8. I don't think he is referring to removing and installing a new dash himself. This is way too involved and really should be done by a pro. I don't think he has alot of options besides maybe looking for another cleaner that can restore the dull look instead of the shiny look the spots have

Removing the dash is alot of work. You will

need to dis-connect alot of electrical stuff. You

will need to pull all the stuff off the steering wheel.

You will need to remove the display unit.

Maybe if you send us a picture we can come up

    with something else.

  9. I would make a stink at the dealer and tell them that you just used a towel to get a mark off the dash and it left it shiny. They might replace it for you under warranty. My old man drives a 2010 Lexus Rx and some of the dashboards out there on newer cars are really sensitive. He used a dry towel and left a huge scratch on the dash. The lexus dealer was great and replaced the dash for him. Of course it didn't hurt that he sent a letter to the dealer and CC'd the regional vp of lexus to let them know how ridiculous it was that just by using a towel that the dash got scratched. I would try this tactic with Porsche. I feel your pain.

  10. $225 for an oil change is way too much. I pay around $115 for an oil change on my 2003 996

looking ahead to my first winter with my 07 987s and I know I should store it with clean oil and over inflate the tires a bit and plug in the battery and use a fuel stabilizer with a full tank of gas. I called my dealer to inquire how much they charge for just an oil change $225 which did not seem bad considering the parts would cost $100 as a DIY (which I have no experience with) but the service guy also said I should change the brake fluid as well before storage... is this necessary?

    thanks for the thoughts

    Dan

  11. did they look at the wheel bearings? My Gf's Audi had to have two wheel bearings replaced and from what you are describing it sounds like the issue. I don't get it personally with these german cars having these bearings go bad. I would have them look at the bearing pack to see what the damage is. All I can think of.

If it is a wheel bearing it will get louder with speed obviously...since it is happening on turns I am a little stumped. Does it happen all the time or occasionaly? Does it happen when driving straight at lets say 30mph? if its on turns and from the rear I would suspect it might be something with the suspension rubbing on something as the suspension takes a load on a turn. Another thing to consider is that you can't just replace one tire in the rear unless they are of the same type and wear characteristics. Tiptronic transmissions have problems with this. This is at least what porsche told me but I have a manual trans and they said it was okay as long as it wasn't a tiptronic. Come to think of it.....this is probably your issue. Different tire traction and the trans is getting messed up. I would recommend replacing the other tire with same brand etc. Anyone else have any thoughts on tires on a tiptronic and issues with the trans.

  12. in my 996 the flap under the gas and brake seems to always fall down which can cause major issues while driving. I went over to home depot and just picked up some strong velcro. Its kind of tough getting the sticky part to stick to the rubber on the back of the mat but it seems to have worked for me as now the mat stays in place. There is no issues with movement of the entire mat since it also has velcro on the floor stock. Go buy some velcro and see if that works.

  13. How do you not know what OEM means? Original Equipment Manufacturer.....in this case Porsche. Plug and play. Also I noticed in the picture it has a BROKEN CLIP. How are you going to fix this as I am wondering what this clip is actually for? Doesn't this clip help lock the headlamp into place? If so I would be on the phone calling Porsche to get a new clip for the assembly or you are screwed.

OEM Litronic will fit without problems on the Halogen connector/wiring, just plug and play.

Im sorry I don't know much about the lights. What is OEM? Here is a photo of one of the ones I got http://cgi.ebay.com/ebaymotors/ws/eBayISAP...RTQ:MOTORS:1123 Also was that the right bulbs for the headlamp.

Thanks a lot for getting back to me with this.

  14. yes the antenna is in the windshield and yes the Sekurit galss is factory. I would go that route of course

Just last week, I had my windshield replaced by Safelite. I have a Boxster, not a C2, but I imagine windshield replacement would be very similar between the two.

They used the same Saint-Gobain Sekurit glass that Porsche uses. It came with the antennae. I was kind of surprised that they were able to install the windshield the next morning after I called them...I think they must have picked up the glass at the dealer in town.

It looks like they did a great job. I noticed one little dab of black urethane coming past the trim at a corner, but I scraped it off with my fingernail with no trouble. Otherwise, I can't tell it was replaced (except of course there is no big crack running down the middle now).

I'm all for supporting the indy shops when possible, but Safelite seemed like they knew what they were doing.

  15. go to a body shop and have them sand, prime and paint it. I would assume a new mirror is quite costly.

    Hi,

I did something really stupid. I was pulling in my garage and I pulled a little too close to one side of the garage because I was trying to avoid an obstacle on the passenger side and I scratched my side mirror assembly. I tried to touch it up with touch up paint but it's still noticable so now I am cosidering just replacing the mirror assembly or repainting the mirror assembly. Is the mirror assembly easy to take off? Would you recommend just replacing the mirror assembly or doing a repaint at a local body shop?

    Thanks,

    Raymond

  16. I think you need to be informed without a line of BS from the dealer. The clutch's last around 25,000 miles depending on driving patterns. Mine lasted till 30000. I just changed mine and the cost at an independant shop on my 2003 C2 was around $1500 for labor and everything. I think 80K has never been done by anyone in any car. If so it is a rare case. Porsches have very precise clutchs which last longer than many other super cars such as ferrari, lambo etc......but they still need to be replaced. Do yourself a favor and get the clutch inspected to see how much is remaining on the disk. I can't believe a dealer would tell you they last 80-100k miles. Ridiculous and I would question buying a car from someone like that

Need someone with some knowledge on the 05 carrera s clutches to please let me know if its possible to get to 80,000 miles without replacing it. Want to purchase the car but the dealer is saying the clutch has never been replaced and it should be good for over 100,000 miles. The car shifts smooth and can't feel any slippage. Don't want to buy the car then have to replace the clutch right away. Also is there anything else major that I should look for on this model? Need some help thanks.

also I know a few people who have had problems with the oil pressure sender. The guage displays what the oil pressure is and with a warm engine it should be around 3-4 bar at around 3-4K rpm's Make sure that the oil pressure while driving isn't at the 5 bar otherwise it is probably the sender or worse their could be something wrong with the engine. The sender is a minor fix and should run $200 or so for the part and labor. Not a big deal. Its a good sign to look for. Also look at the tires. These are where money can really be burned. See how much tread is left. You will spend a fortune on tires!!! I am assuming you have 19 inch rims on it. I set of Michelin PS2's will set you back aprox. $2000. Keep that in mind

  17. for the money they are probably not of the best quality but I would say go for it. See if they are any good. You intend on having them for winter anyways. I would have to assume that a wheel is a wheel and that if it trully was not safe and they didn't meet safety requirements than they probably would have a hard time selling them.

I'm looking for an extra set of Porsche 911 (2005, C2) wheels to be mounted with winter tires. I came across various sites on the Internet, in particular the seller on E-Bay (wheelsandcaps) is selling a complete set for $479 plus $85 shipping. These are replicas and they have the same dimensions and offset as my original wheels (18x8/10). When I called them, they explained they are cast-alloys made in Italy. Does anyone have any experience with these particular "E-Bay" wheels. I came across a similar looking cast-alloy model on other web sites, however they are charging app. $500 per wheel. I was also explained by another wheel specialist that cast-alloy is softer material but easier to fix than the original wheels made from forged steel. However, it is not clear to me whether there are any safety risks with cast alloy material when driving Porsche at higher speed. Any advice would be greatly appreciated before I decide which way to go. Should I go instead to my local dealer and order the wheels from them? I attached the link and the pic of the wheel under question.

  18. I dont have a garage opener on my 996 but i do know what i had to do with my lexus. They use a rolling code door on all new garage door openers. You need to physically go over to the garage opener and press the button on it which should put it into discovery mode. Then you will have something like a minute to do what is required for the Boxster opener

Hello all, I am in need of some advice; I recently got into a 05 Boxster and I am loving it. It is my first Porsche and I am very happy!

Anyhow as I was reading the owners manual I came across the section the takes you through training the car to accept and then operate ones Garage door or gate and what have you. I have cleared the the codes as instructed, then depressed one of the three buttons I would like to use for the garage and then help my original garage opener in front of the car and the parking lights signaled that the car did receive the signal. Now when I try to use the newly programmed car button the garage will not open or close. I have even tried programming this away from the house. Looking for tips and pointers.

Second with the 986 spare tire actually fit the 987 lug pattern?

    Thanks in advance

    Z

  19. take a picture and post it. I would like to see what your talking about

hey everyone I have a 2001 996 turbo that is sitting lower on the whole drivers side than the passenger side? It doesn't look bend or twisted, the bottom of the car looks exactly what you would expect for a car with 19000 miles on it. Just looking at the rear of the car I can see its sitting higher. Has anyone else heard of this and is it something easy to adjust. I looked at the sway bar end links, perfect. I think it still has the factory struts i.e. not adjustable. But the rear has a white plastic looking toothed ring at the top, not sure if this is an adjustable coil over in the rear or not. I am not exactly sure what a set of ps9's or 10's even look like. But any help would be greatly appreciated. Thanks guys
