Sorry, no advice on the brake rotors but did benefit from others responses but being in the East Bay area myself and a longtime 996 owner, I have always had terrific experiences with Sunset Porsche in Oregon and/or Pelican Parts as they have a NorCal warehouse and can get parts out to you quickly.

I had a similar issue with my 99' Carrera and when I removed the overhead bezel where the sensor is installed I simply found that the sensor had come unplugged.

I have the identical issue on my 99' 996 model and I'm just as frustrated and as much a "die hard" DIY. Did you find the problem with this?

Interestingly enough, when I was having my ICV related problems I was not logging ANY fault codes at all.

Had the identical problem with my 99' 996 as would not idle but ran like a "champ" at higher RPM's. Let up off the throttle and the engine would fall off and stall. Replaced the idle control valve and held my breath when first started up and idled perfectly and has run great since. Took a couple of weeks but Sunset did provide a replacement ICV at a competitive price.

Hi Everyone!
Have a `99 996 C2
Car was running just fine and last time it was started, idled well until the first stop sign and as i clutched to neutral the engine stalled. Starts up again right away but unless I hold the gas pedal to maintain about 1500rpm, it will stall.
Limped it over to my Indy, and he read the fault code that indicates defective MAF.
Installed a new one but didn`t change a thing.
Any ideas...

Is there an available paint code for a match for the silver or best to just plan on having a custom match done?

Other posts indicate that in the unpowered position the ICV is open - my unit is fully closed in the unpowered position. Cycles open with power applied though.

On my 996 C2 I recently removed the throttle body so that I could give it and the idle control valve a proper cleaning. Job went perfectly, reinstalled the ICV complete with a new gasket and bolted the shiny clean assembly back onto the intake. Engine fired right up and all was normal. The next day I find that it starts up but immediately drops to below the normal idle and dies. Slightly better with the a/c off but very low idle and the red oil pressure light is winking on and off the idle is so low. Basically won't idle. No durametric fault codes and runs great at any rpm over ilde but sure won't idle.
Could it be time for a replacement ICV?

I would reset the fault and see if it comes back - if it does then it likely needs to be replaced.
I will do that Loren, thanks. Is it safe to assume that the sensor is part of (or is) the LED unit on the forward, top portion of the dash?

I replaced my sensor about 8 months ago and very straight forward in my 98 Boxster. I had a count on my Durametric that kept increasing. When I set the alarm nothing would trigger it. I orderd a replacement from Sunset installed the new sensor in twenty minutes or so and everything works.
I will check out the count and then think about the sensor replacement as sounds like a snap to change out. Thanks

So, my Durametric indicates that I have an alarm arming issue on my 1999 C2 that is related to the Interior Sensor. I need access now to check it out and/or replace it but I am unsure of its location and best way to access it. I have read several posts on this unit but no clear details on the replacement. Any tips would be greatly appreciated!!!!
I too would be interested in this. One thing to check on the Durametric is the 'Count' value to indicate if it was just a once off issue or a regular one. This will be useful in determining whether it needs replacing.

I have been trying to smooth out a minor lump in the idle of my 1999 C2. Have done plenty of work lately to include replacing plugs, coils, AOS (gee, that was fun!), cleaned the TB and ICV. Runs like new now but still have a very minor rough idle. Using my Durametric I now have a reoccuring code P1516, DVE Control Range.
Does anyone know exactly what this code is and could it have anything to do with the rough idle.
Thanks in advance for any suggestions or thoughts.

My 99' C2 runs at nearly he same temps as you describe, maybe just a tick lower. Normal summer highway driving indication is right between the 8 and the 0 and varies slightly based on outside air temps. In town it bumps 10-15 degrees and varies slightly running around the left edge to middle of the 0. Car has spotless radiators now, flushed and tight coolant system.

Yes, that is the outside air temperature probe. The HVAC system uses it.
OBC can be turned on in any car.

Yes, it can be turned on in less than 5 minutes.
If you are ever over my way (Sacramento - Roseville) I can turn it on for you.

Okay, so I have have yet another rookie Porsche owner question.
I have a sensor mounted in the lower right hand area of the front intake area that sure looks to be a sensor for outside air temperature yet I cannot find any reference in the manual regarding panel display of the temp. My car does not have the onboard computer so assume that without this option I cannot display the temp and the sensor that I see is simply along for the ride? Do other systems use the data that it senses?

In my 99 C2 with the OBC showing an outside temperature of 107 yesterday in Houston stop and go traffic, I was at the outside right edge of the 0 in 180. I've never had mine go higher than that.
That gives me a great target temperature and suspect that under similar conditions mine would run a bit warmer. Couple of checks suggested though that could help my case. Thanks much.

Yes, that is normal.
See the DIY on cleaning the front radiators (yearly). Also, check your coolant tank cap for leaks.
Thanks much Loren and just yesterday I cleaned the front radiators and there was darn plenty of "stuff" inside there so bound to help out. Will also check out the tank cap.

After many years of waiting I am thrilled to be the proud owner of my first Porsche, a 1999 C2 that I find very hard to park in the garage and not use as my daily driver - just love driving and fiddling with this car.
I have always been a gauge watcher and with little Porsche experience I would like to know what others see for a normal coolant operatiing temperature range. Mine runs between the 8 and 0 in 180 so call it just short of 200 but does tend to move around a bit in a range between 180 and 200 depending on the outside air temp, driving conditions and current airflow. Is this a normal operating temp and would the slight range of temp be onsidered normal for a 1999 C2?

996 Shifter boot and knob
in 996 Series (Carrera, Carrera 4, Carrera 4S, Targa)

Installing a B&M short shifter in my 1999 996 and have been unable to remove the shifter boot and knob assembly from the original shift lever. I have pulled the boot up towards the knob end as far as it will go and still do not see or feel a set screw as the instructions indicate and even after trying various other twisting, pulling and tugging operations I am still unable to remove the boot and knob. Any ideas short of a razor blade knife would be greatly appreciated.
