In my 2005 997 manual Carrera S with Chrono pack, I have had an intermittant problem of the car
failing to start due to a battery with too low a charge. I drive this car daily. No dash battery discharge
warning indication has ever shown.
Recently I changed the battery, and then had a regulator failure requiring a new one. 4 weeks,
later, after a few starts during the day, the car failed to start due to low battery.
To shorten the story, I discovered there is a 1 volt voltage drop in the thick positive wire that
travels the length of the car from the alternator to the battery. Trouble shooting indicates the
problem is between the alternator, and the connector next to the gearbox. The generator/regulator
puts out 13.8V, but at the battery the voltage varies between 12.5 and 13 V.
I suspect it is where 2 wires are pre joined at the starter motor solonoid, since there are
no other connectors, and the wire is unlikely to have been damaged.
Before I go removing the air filter and fuel injection plenium chamber to get behind the starter
motor, I have a couple of questions.
Is this an uncommon problem, or is it a known design fault?
If anyone has had this before, what was the cause?
Why doesn't the battery discharge warning on the dash come on to warn me?

If anyone has a used PSE system for sale, or even just the mufflers, please
let me know.
-
$5500 AUS is simply crazy to invest in a PSE. However, If that price includes the installation of the mufflers and more importantly the control switch and required wiring it may not be as crazy as it seems. The wiring job is an all day plus labor intensive task. You need to remove a lot of cabin interior parts to properly route the wires from the dash mounted switch to the vacuum control solenoid in the motor compartment. If they plan to mimic the factory install then they will wire to the DME which requires carefully work process. The muffler install is a 'piece of cake' (very easy and straightforward).
.
The price is without installation. Australia is a high tax and high import duty country, that makes even the cost of buying cars at least 50%
more than USA or Europe. I buy parts overseas on ebay, and then I have to add shipping and import duty.
I have thoroughly read all the posts. I am experienced in messing with cars, including labour intensive rewiring. I want a similar sound
to PSE which is switchable, but at a reduced price. I am interested to learn more about the aftermarket units available. But I can also see
that it wouldn't be too hard to weld the extra outflow pipe to a standard muffler, and source an exhaust valve. That is why I want to know
what the internal differences between the PSE and standard muffler are, too see if that is an easy modification too.

I was surprised to be quoted a price of $5,500 (Australian dollars) for a Porsche Sports Exhaust kit for my 2005 Carrera S with chrono. Comparing my standard muffler with the Sports Exhaust Muffler, it looks externally identical except for an extra exhaust pipe that is welded to the top of the unit, and which is opened or closed by the electrically operated vacuum powered flap.
I can see that it would not be too difficult to weld the extra exhaust pipe to the standard muffler, and even add a non Porsche vacuum valve.
My question is, are there any differences internally between the 2 mufflers, and what are the differences? I assume that there are differences, because a common muffler hack of welding a pipe from a new outlet (as used in the PSE muffler), to the single exhaust, still does not produce the same sound as a fully open PSE. Reading various posts, others are adding an additional pipe between the muffler intake and exhaust pipe to get extra sound (I suspect that would be louder than the PSE depending on the diameter of the bypass pipe).
There is a post with a picture of a standard muffler cut open, but does anyone have a picture of a PSE muffler cut open?

The problem is now solved.
Mobridge tech help answered my initial installation query, but did not answer a couple of emails reporting
that the setup Wizard won't run on at least 6 computers that I tried. I now know that the set up Wizard
version that was available for download initially (version 1.1.1) was faulty. After a week of trying, I went
back to the website, and an older software version was displayed (version 1.1.0), which I downloaded,
and ran successfully.
For everyone's information, the setup Wizard software once it is executed, gives 3 options for downloading
your selected setup to the Mobridge unit - installer cable, bluetooth, or SD card. I used the latter. So it is
not necessary to have an installer cable.
I have not reconfigured the Porsche PIWIS software removing the CD stacker. Everything still runs fine,
but an error message shows everytime the car is started, that no CD stacker is found. After acknowledging
this by pressing the right side rotary knob, everything works fine. I will reconfigure PIWIS later.
I have now looked at the Mobridge website download section today, and a later version of the Wizard
software is offered (version 1.1.2). I hope that this information may help future DIY installers.

Thanks.
I am aware of this information from the Mobridge website.
I have done it all, but when I get to step 3 of the installation guide,
the program won't run. It jams with a windows error mesage.
I wonder if it is my version of Windows XP. I'll next try to run the
program on someone elses computer

There is a requirement.
PC running Windows XP, Vista, or Windows 7.
What windows software are you running?
Paul
I would look at your computer. Did you download
with a windows program or something like Modzilla?
There is a guy who did your same install. Look int DIY.
I would go to the dealer and have him connect up
what you do not have installed in your Porsche account.
Paul
To clarify my software problem
I downloaded the Mobridge install wizard, with the intention to to try to use my notebook over Bluetooth to configure Mobridge directly. This software would allow the unit to be reconfigured to Porsche from the original Mercedes setup. I can install the program OK on the computers, but when I run the program file on a number of computers, I get a Windows XP error message. I have downloaded the file a number of times using Mozilla and Internet Explorer.
I have tried to run the program on a stand alone computer, and with a Bluetooth connection
to the Mobridge in place. Program still gives a Windows error message when I try to run it.
Any further suggestions?
I am running Windows XP with the latest updates. Should the program be able to run
on a computer without the Mobridge connected, either by cable or Bluetooth?

I have a 2005 997 carrera S with CD changer, and a I self installed a Mobridge Bluetooth unit so I can connect my phone and Ipod. When I bought the Mobridge, it was set up for Mercedes.
I know that the hardware installation is correct, because the Mobridge establishes contact with the Ipod and I can pair my phone via Bluetooth with it. But PCM does not see it at all. On pressing tel button system responds - no SIM installed, pressing CD twice for cd changer shows 'cd changer: no cd'.
I tried to place the latest downloaded .flf files on SD card, stopped and started car multiple times, did let it sleep - no use.
An email from Mobridge tech help suggested that I get an installer to run the install wizard to reconfigure for Porsche, which I assume requires the special installer cable that plugs into the Ipod connection and a laptop. It was also suggested that the Porsche electronics needs to be reconfigured as not having a CD changer.

Does anyone know for sure if the Install Wizard can be run over the Bluetooth connection? Any other suggestions?
There is a lot of pride in doing a DIY installation, and working on my Porsche is a "labour of love". I will only go to a professional installer to complete things, if all other possibilities are exhausted.

I finally figured it out. The last screw that is not obvious, is behind the headlight switch, which has
to be removed first.

I am most of the way through removing the driver side lower trim on a right hand drive 2005 Carrera S.
There seems to be one remaining attachment point around the key ignition switch, which I can not
find even when I removed the ignition. Can anyone help? Pictures would be good.
Voltage drop between alternator and battery
in 997-1 Series (Carrera, Carrera 4, Carrera 2S, Carrera 4S)

The problem was fixed by adding a thicker wire from the alternator to the starter.
