  1. Stiffen up the rear swaybar and get the wheels aligned for

track use. There is 3 to 4 more seconds.

    Paul

    Hi Paul, finally i contacted CCwheel.com, i was told they got 18" wheels can clear OEM PCCB (C10 model) , and 18" are the max size for full Slick Tires. They recommend full slick Hoosier R100's series 18" x 320 19 x 250 for rim 18" x 12" R, 18 x 9" F

Still checking if that work. I have abandonned my quest for 19" full slick...

    Patrick

  2. Thanks Paul, will do.

I live in Shanghai, and my car is serviced on....F1 track there, so car is mostly used on that fantastic track, so i can swap wheel tyres anytime conveniently. I see there GT3 cup asia here service on 18" wheel/tyres with Michelin but none using PCCB. Your previous note anyhow gave me hopes.

In contact with Champion/rim and TRG for tyres....

For the story, on F1 track shanghai (5.5 km). the laptimes are

    F1 cars : 1'35" best

    GP2 cars ; 1.45" best

Formula Renault:2'06" best (which I drive too, at 2.09)

    Porsche Carrera Cup / 460hp(with Slick); 2'12"

    My GT3 RS on MPSC: 2.29 "

    All Ferrari 430 on MPSC :> 2.30"

Looking at the difference from my GT3 RS with Carrera Cup, i am sure with the slick and light wheels, can improve by more than 10s , the rest being

    power, suspension, aero, weight.

    will tell you later.

  3. The TRG racing crew put 18" tires on all of there

    997 cars.

    Paul

Thanks Paul. yet can a 18" wheel be fitted with on 997 GT3 RS with PCCB ? It seems OK in the rear, but in the front, apprently seem too crowded.

What wheels & full slick size would you recommend, as i will have a specific set for the track

    original

Front Stock come with 19 x 8.5 with 235/30 tyres.....

    Rear Stock 19 x 12 with 305/30 tyres...

    thx

There are quite a few race wheel manufacturers who build 18" Porsche size wheels to clear the big brake kits. Check out CCWheels.com, they are some of the best and have good prices and excellent customer service. Their CCW C14 or C12, or C10 in an 18" x 9" wheel with a 53 offset will easily clear your 997 PCCB brakes.

I believe Champion and HRT also have 18's that clear the PCCBs, as does BBS and Chargraphic's GT series.

Check out CCW's new LM series of 3 piece wheels. You can get an width up to 16" with 16" 17" and 18" diameters only. They can build them to any offset that you desire. For a GT3, a brand new set of these go for $2,800.00 with the 12" x 18" weighing in somewhere between 20 to 21 lbs. The front 9" is probably around 18 lbs!

I cannot say enough good things about CCW. I personally run their 18" x 9" with a 53 offset and 997 PCCB's - no problems!

    Stephen

Thanks Stephen, you are lifting some of the mystery.

Considering that i will build a specific set wheel + tyres, for TRACK PURPOSE ONLY then I am thinking:

18 x 9" Rim (CCW or Champion) with 265ZR35/ (Front)

    18 x 12 Rim with 315ZR30 (Rear) or 325/30

with the lightest wheels types, maybe Champion RS28 or RG5-B or even Dymag Carco, and tyres either full Slick or Hoosier A6

What tyres types are you using for the track ?

  5. thanks Patrick for the info ... the car is now at the Porsche specialist and I will hopefully drive the car back home on Wednesday wiith a maintenance plan and fresh service having been done. (gonna be gritting my teeth waiting for my baby, already do miss her :()

I have already indicated to the manager that the RMS sweat is a common issue on these cars and he indicated that he will liaise with their Porsche specialist technicians on the matter,

    1. Has someone who has tried the 996/993 TT seal still experience leaks? (seems to be the solution)

    2. Has anyone tried the new 997.2 GT3 RMS? and what's the success on this seal?

(maybe its me but have not seen anyone commenting on the above two points as not having worked)

As per your link Patrick the vacum being faulty now just = more $$$. Sounds to me like people now guessing what could be wrong :) ... id think after two years of the car being on the market there would have been a solution to this problem

I guess they have, because Porsche run Carrera Cup and GT3, but would they admit that officially, likely not because admitting it has far more implications

on Porsche reliability on public market.

Yet all the posts on 993/996TT seem to point to a solution yielding 5hp less....but it is worth when warranty will expire. You can recover easily the loss of hp by

putting simply light wheels. stock wheels front/rear are 12/14.4 kg, aftermarket ones are 8.8/9.9kg, it by far offset the 5hp

    ciao

  6. Thanks for the welcome Loren ... :)

Am taking the car into a local Porsche specialist who will put the car on a maintenance plan and do the yearly service on the car which includes changing oil with Castrol Edge (that is why the oil question)

Will monitor the oil sweat on the car when the car is back ...

    On the smoking:

Every single time i start the car up, it lets out a puff of smoke and thats it, after that she is fine (for the three days i have the car, its been doing this every single day when i start her up) ... so technically not really smoking, just that initial puff of smoke (have had the BMW ///M cars before and am not use to seeing this that's why the silly questions :))

@patrick, wonder if i should just tell the Porsche specialist to rather just leave the seal, if this issue has not been resolved ... will hear what they say

    :renntech:

Well, Adam, if your car is still under warranty, it won't hurt changing the seal. Also according to some specialists poin1 and 3 might be closely related, as you solve one, you solve both. Anyway, each time you use the car (engine running oil temp at operating temperature), take the time to run the electronically

monitored oil level, so you can get an idea, that leak is consuming. To me last time, it was somthing like 0.5L for 3000Km....

    patrick

Check also the below link on the most recent findings on RMS....

  8. For a GT3 engine, a RMS leak is all but normal, although common.

What would it cost Porsche to admit it and re-design the seal to make lit leak-free ? Financially not much, only recalling 5000 cars, and change

seal including manpower wouldn't exceed 1000 USD per car. So 5 M$ operation is not much for the most profitable Car Company in the world, which made several B$ profit in 2008, on VW shares...!

    So why ?

Likely, Porsche has built up its image and branding continuously on Performances & Solid Design & Reliability (unlike Ferrari), so admitting a design

error could have a far more disastrous effect.....pushing potential buyers to move to the less reliable Ferraris or Aston ....

How to quantity that, hard to say ? This is why, Porsche is not able to decide the best course of action between making happier the few thousands GT3 owners and keep their N.1 image on reliability. Future might tell...

Why the more powerful TT and GT2 don't have those troubles...

  9. Hi All, im new to Porsche and have purchased a silver/orange 997 GT3 RS, the car has 11000km ... a few observations and i have been told these are normal and just need to confirm them

    1. The car smokes on start up? told this is normal

    2. The car makes a "glak glak" sound when idling, and when one depresses the clutch it goes away ... told this is normal due to the car having a single mass flywheel

    3. Car has an "oil sweat" on the RMS ... seen the other posts wrt this and has there really been a solution? Should i have Porsche change the seal or just leave it?

What are the recommended oils to use in the car (excluding Mobile1)?

Castrol Edge or Castrol TWS motorsport? ... we dont get Mobile1 here in South Africa ...

any DIY links for this car?

    Thanks

    Adam

    Hi Adam,

    2 is normal

1 + 3 cannot be qualified as normal, yet they are common and my GT3RS 2007/9000Km has experienced all that. For the RMS seal, i replaced it 2 times under warranty, although it start leaking again 200km after replacement, no big deal, but can not be defined as normal. Still arguing with Porsche

  10. try tirerack.

    www.tirerack.com

    Paul

Well, Paul, i did that already but no 19" shows up, except the Hoovier semi-slick , not much different from Michelin Pilot Sport Cup.

Just wonder why only18" full slick available, std and widely available for Carrera Cup, but not even 19" seem do exist, while 997 GT3, GT3, TT, GT2 are all on 19" wheels..... Economic crisis oblige...

    I keep searching.

    Patrick
