  1. Depends on the 3 spoke air bag, leather or vinyl? Painted crest or embossed crest? I purchased a nice 3 spoke airbag with painted crest off ebay for $459. The leather one was $859! If you buy it directly from Porsche They're around $1,200. I got my three spoke dark burl wood and leather wheel for $159 and the guy threw in a matching auto shift knob. That same outfit through Porsche is $1,400. Look around on eBay and wrecking yards but make sure they guarantee it hasn't been deployed.
  2. Unfortunately, from the symptoms you describe (the sounds it was making, the fact that there was a slight oil leak, smell of something burning), it sounds like a possible engine failure, with the culprit possibly being the IMS (Intermediate Shaft Bearing) failing. This is just a WAG, as maybe it's something totally harmless but, given the history of these M96 engines, it's a distinct possibility. Do a search here for IMS or go to the LNEngineering.com website and do some reading. I think also that Flat6innovations.com may also have a sound file and/or other information on the symptoms, etc... Hope it turns out to be nothing serious. Let us know what the outcome is. Regards, Maurice. When you say the engine oil had run out did you check it by the dip stick or use the readout on the dash? That M96 motor holds 9 qts. of oil which is a lot of oil to leak out. It seems to me you would have seen a big spot under the car or your oil warning light would have come on not to mention black smoke burning off the hot exhaust while you were driving. The only thing I can think of is you had a major RMS failure. The slight oil leak that the dealer saw is usually the first indication that the RMS is failing. If all the oil leaked out and the CEL was flashing and you continued to run the motor it could be anything and everything that was destroyed.
  3. Just my two cents but I haven't heard of a third party warranty being of much use at all. There always seems to be a hitch with them where they get out of paying for something or you end up paying what seems like enough to have covered the cost to begin with. I reluctantly purchased one with my '99 Box and the first time I had to use it the inspector declared the repair a pre existing condition. I could see where it was all going and cashed the warranty in and put the money in a savings account to cover repairs. So far I've only used about 2/3's of it. The insurance companies are in business to make money not pay it out.
  4. I bought my first Porsche in July of '09 it is a 1999 Boxster that had 74K miles on it and I knew nothing about Porsches (I know a lot more now). The dealer I bought it from is too far away so I found a highly recommended local Porsche mechanic and the first time I took it to him he scared the s**t out of me telling me all the things that could go wrong with the 986 model. I spent $2,200 for the 60K service and four new rotors then another $400 for a complete alignment and tire balance. I decided that I didn't buy the car to worry about IMS, RMS or PMS but I bought it to drive and have fun When I'm having a bad day all it takes is to put the top down and go for a drive and when I get back home my jaw is sore from the eternal grin on my face. I drive my Box to the store for groceries in the AX events on weekends and just finished a day at Infineon tracking it at speeds of over 100 MPH. After 5K miles it has not lost or burned a drop of oil and still runs like a champ. I've spent a few hundred here and there pimping it out and sometimes just love to stand next to it and look at it. Should you take your dads '99 HELL YES!!! Don't freak out over the cost of the coolant container replacement that is what it costs to do it at a dealer, you can shave off a couple of hundred at an independent shop and if your a DIY guy you can save even more.
  5. I own a 1999 986 with the same problem and it has been a nightmare trying to fix it. The first thing my mechanic did was replace the sending unit which made the gauge go from about 95% full to about 98% full reading and untangle some of the hoses that regulate air escaping from the tank. Then he drained the tank and put 12 liters of gas in while the Porsche computer was hooked up. The computer did it's thing and indicated it had fixed the problem. When I filled the tank the gas gauge went back to the 95% reading. The next thing he wants to do is remove the instrument cluster to check the gauge but at this point I know how many miles I can go before the tank needs filling so I think I'm going to stop trying to fix it.
  6. My '99 Boxster had that problem at 70 mph and I had Tillman's in Sebastopol do a full alignment and front tire balance and that took care of it. I also have Pzero's on my car.
