  1. Panic over Guys:rolleyes:; Basically I routed around between intake manifolds to cylinders 5 & 6 and found a bracket with nothing sitting in it.

I further routed around and found that the temperature sensor for the engine compartment had fallen down and was sitting on the side of the block and no doubt cooking. Temperature sensor is not back in its rightful place and staus quo is resumed.

  2. Gents,

Any help would be appreciated; I have a '03 996 C2 Cab and today whilst driving the red temperature light started flashing and a message was displayed in the on-board computer indicating 'Engine Compartment Fan Failure'. I pulled over and checked the engine compartment, but the fan was running.

However, the coolant level was around the minimum mark, so I topped it up. I then re-started the car and all was good for a few mile until the same message popped up on the dash and the temperature light started to blink at me again. I have watched the temperature guage and it has remained well within the normal range, as I can hear the fan running. That said, the fan now appears to be running constantly and continues to run when I switch the car off.

Any ideas on it's cause, would be appreciated.

    Dave

P.S. I'm currently disconnecting the engine compartment fan when parking up, as not to drain the battery.

  3. Drive the car around a little (get it warm) and pull over with the door open and pump the clutch a few times; is there still a noise? My car does that when it is cold, but the noise goes away with a little driving. I had the clutch, pressure plate, flywheel, and lever replaced 9,000 miles ago. About 250 miles ago I had the whole actuation system replaced and flushed (master/ slave) because of other issues (probably just needed a bleed). The noise is slightly less, but still there-- it is the release lever and pressure plate. I wouldn't worry about it, I noticed it and replaced everything in that area (for other reasons) but the sound never changed. If Porsche wants to pay for it, I would have them attempt to fix it, if not I wouldn't think about it.

There is a chance: pressure plate is cracked.

Just did a 250 mile run today with my son. Up and down some nice mtn roads, great twisties, and some great food in between. :D

Could hear it at a stop light after the first 100 miles or so, and plenty of other stops along the way back. I do not believe hot/cold affects it at all. But for now, I'm driving it as is.

    Thanks!

Interestingly, my 996 C2 Cab has a slight squeaky noise when engaging the clutch, but only noticable in dry humid weather. If its cold or raining (therefore more moisture in the air) there is no squeak at all. I've heard that the problem is common too and most people leave it.

  4. Gents (and Ladies),

I have a light grey fabric roof on my 996 cab ('03) and would like some advice on the best cleaning product to use. I have previously used Renovo 'Ultra Proofer' product on the roof to seal it (about six months ago), but it is starting to look a little grotty and would like to clean it up. I understand this product will take some elbow grease to remove before I can clean the hood properly (as it did on my last 996 cab), but wondered if anyone has had any good or bad experiences with different cleaning products.

As ever, many thanks in advance.

    Dave

  5. Maybe time to clean the front radiators.

PSE should not change it's tone if no wires are connected - because the mechanical valves are always open when there is no electronic control.

    Hi Loren,

Checked my radiator ducts and they were both partially occupied by leaves. Used a vacuum cleaner to remove the leaves and radiator fans have not cut in at all over the last couple of days.

    Many thanks,

    Dave

  6. Gents,

I had a PSE on a previous 996 (1999) and pursched a newer 996 (2003) recently with a PSE installed (without wiring) and have noticed the following:

Occasionally, when I am sitting in traffic, I will hear what I think is the cooling fans cutting in (after I've been stationary for a while) and if I then blip the throttle, the PSE's are momentarily much deeper in sound.

My PSE sounds great in normal use, but when the above occurs, is f**king awesome!

Anyway, I just wanted to check if this was normal and if anyone has a more technical explanation of why this happens.

Many thanks in anticipation of a response.

    Regards,

    Dave

  7. Gents,

My '99 996 C2 Cab's coolant expansion tank is leaking. It is leaking from the underside around where the coolant level indicator sensor is installed. I have purchased a new sensor, but it doesn't come with a seal. I can only assume the seal is inside the tank. Is this right?

If so, I guess I might have to order a new expansion tank, but would like some help before ordering, as my 2 local OPC's here in the UK don't seem to know!

I think the latest revised expansion tank for my car is part no. 996-106-147-56

Thank you in anticipation of a response.

    Dave

Loren is correct. There is no seal. I pressure checked my tank before installation without the sensor even installed and it held pressure. It is a PITA job and I did not want to install a faulty tank. The sensor is a dry sensor and does not come in contact with any coolant. If you look closely in the tank cavity that holds the sensor you will see that it is completely sealed.

This is very helpful; so if the sensor is a dry one, I guess that it must be its housing that's leaking? In any event, I think I need to order a new tank.

Many thanks for your help. :D

  9. Don't know what the replacement aftermarket batteries sold in the UK look like.

That looks like a Moll style battery that has the vent provision on either side of the battery. I can see it in your picture. There should be a plug where the yellow arrow is for the vent. On the opposite side there should be another plug. That is so you can vent the battery from either side, if needed, and depending on the vehicle application.

Take some more pictures and see if you can find the brand.

With the Moll you remove a plug on the side and press in this adapter that connects to the clear plastic vent tube.

Thanks Loren/Toolpants. I'll take some more photos tonight and look for the brand name.

  10. Chaps,

Whilst installing an alpine sub this afternoon in my '99 996 C2 CAB I came across the following clear tube located close to my battery. One end of the tube is open and looks like it should be connected to something, where the other seems to dissappear into the top of the front right hand wheel arch.

Any ideas on what it is for?/where it should be connected?

  11. Gents,

I have just purchased an alpine swd 1600 sub with built in amp to supplement my current install. However, the manual for the sub says that I need to run the power feed directly from the +ive terminal of the battery, but I have tapped into the power feed for the head unit for the time being.

Therefore, does anyone know a simple enough route through the bulkhead into the boot compartment (trunk), as the sub would put less stress on the loom if I feed directly from the battery.

Any help on finding an easy route for my power feed would be appreciated.

    Thanks,

    Dave (dcboxster)

  12. Gents (and Ladies),

I own a '99 C2 CAB and am considering purchasing an alpine 9852 head unit to replace my CDR-32 becker unit. I have a couple of questions as follows:

    1. The head unit has a versatile link function; does anyone know if I can hook this up to my cdc-3 changer in the boot (trunk) and whether it would require any special adapters?

    2. Will I also need any special wiring harness adapters to connect up the heap unit?

Many thanks in anticipation of your advice.

  13. Gentlemen,

I just had my rough running 996 C2 CAB diagnosed by my local OPC in Colchester (UK) and my MAF has gone bad <_<

My car is a '99 996 C2 CAB (Manual) and I'm pretty sure that the Porsche Part No. is 996.606.123.00 (i.e. non-4wd and non-e-gas). However, to assist in sourcing this part outside the Porsche deeler network, I was wondering if anyone knew the Bosch Part Number for it?

Thank you in anticipation of your advice.
