  1. You should have PCM 2.x multimedia unit because of model year is 04. However, the SW/FW version can show 3.x (versions A, B, C), but you must use DVD for sure (unit is placed under front passenger seat). Please check your dealer, there is a 01/10 update of map DVDs (which works with your SW version for sure, an update is placed on the same DVD as maps), which are compatible for any PCM 2.x with DVD unit.

  2. Example: Content of PCM21_NavDVD disc with maps 08.2009 Europe

    Maybe it will help ...

Thank you very much for your support, I think the suggestion of going through (the necessary pain)a Porsche dealer is the wisest one, I'll certainly avoid frying the PCM and save myself a lot of trouble.

    Cheers,

  3. Sorry for the late answer! Maybe you already found solution under other topics/posts related to PCM 2.1 upgrades. In this case as I know it does not matter what region (European or American) are you using for PCM 2.1 Multimedia upgrade, real difference is in maps only.

Because you have used SW from unknown source, it could be many reasons:

    1. You have upgraded PCM 2.1 multimedia with incorrect FW version (for 997 car types instead of 955)

    2. You have failed (or not finished) upgrade of PCM navigation module FW that comes on new navigation DVD (release 08.2009)

    3. You have got wrong or damaged DVD media (DVD disc is common for all car types equipped with PCM 2.1 Multimedia navigation unit at least FW level "B" aka version 3.x

    4. You have bought fake or older release from tricky traders (Bulgaria or Greece ;-)

    Notes:

In case of 08.2007 (or 2008) maps you have to use additional PCM 2.1 Multimedia Update CD Navigation MY08 to (via DVD unit) to use newer DVD disc

In case of 08.2009 maps your PCM navigation module update is already on newer DVD disc

  4. I would recommend to you to check wires and connector contacts and switches (can be damaged or corroded) used for PCM remote control on steering wheel. Maybe it could help. BTW, what happens with PCM unit when you just simply disconnect this feature? Does it work normally?

    Hi guys,

I have a MY05 Cayenne S in the UK and the PCM (v2) is starting to show some rather weird and random behaviour.

I have the multifunction steering wheel, and most of the time, it's only possible to adjust the volume using the controls on the wheel. The PCM control knob doesn't function. Sometimes it does, and then it blairs out. I've removed the knob and checked for dust / grime, but it still plays up.

Other times, when the audio is in 'mute' via the steering wheel control, it will randomly come out of mute into the last volume setting whilst driving along. This is very distracting.

I've performed a factory reset via the menu system, but I think that this only resets the audio customisations. It feels to me like it needs a full reset.

Is there any process that I can follow to force a hardware reset of the system? Any other ideas gratefully received.

    Cheers

    Pete

  5. PCM2.1 SW version 1.x upgraded to version 3.x means you are at model level B, so you should be ready to use latest navigation DVDs.

Did you download 955 (e.g. Cayenne) kit CDs for model level A and B upgrade for sure? Maybe you just missed 000.044.901.40 PCM navigation unit update CD MY08, which needs to be installed as well (via external DVD unit). Then you can use DVD containing maps from 2008 year. Let me know you got those two CDs for Cayenne instead of 911/Cayman/Boxter. I am looking for them, so I can help you with the rest (missing CD and DVD from MY08).

What are product numbers and/or labels of those CDs?

    Hello,

I bought a month ago, in Germany, 2005 Cayenne coming from Canada with a separate DVD unit under passenger's seat. American Navigation DVD delivered with it, when using in Europe, I live in South of France the PCM says Navigation error, System not available.

I had found in various forums a link to a Torrent bit server which was actually allowing the download of the 2008 software update and DVD, unfortunately this link was now interrupted. Therefore I bought an update on Internet and received 2 CD's (1 & 1) and a PCM DVD 2.1 2010.

    - I have inserted CD 1 in CD player, update has been accomplished on R1 and R2 and software went from Version 1 to Version 3.1,

    - no reaction or action when CD 2 is inserted, PCM tells Data CD

    - when PCM DVD inserted in DVD, I still get the original message, Navigation error, System not available.

When looking in the unit PCM and Unit System software files target and actual are consistent in each register and Entered is Yes as well as found: Yes. But navigation does not work, and in information I still find the last navigation address in Ontario (Canada).

Has anybody encountered such a problem? Should one manually give a target?....did I miss a step (I am far from being a technician? How should I proceed?

    Thanks for your support.

  6. I have SW versions 3.3, e.g. model level B (PCM version 05024FD1/4805) in my PCM 2.1 unit (MY06) and no problem with the latest DVD - Navigation disc (08.2009 maps). New DVD navigation discs are supported from model level B, so I made an update of Navigation System module only.

Unfortunately, I have no evidence of any reason to update PCM 2.1 unit to model level C. Maybe newer PCM SW versions influence TMC functions, which should use PCM Radio module.

I suppose (am affraid of) that PCM 2.1 Multimedia update to model level C is available via authorised/dealer shops only due to some issues with previous updates. I found some people had to use repair kits for specific release of model level A and B updates (issues with CD and Bose amplifier module).

    Hello, I have a 2005 Cayenne S with PCM2.1

The PCM had SW Version 1.0 ( Standard Production ) at first. I used 000.043.205.47.003 and was able to successfully upgrade from SW Version 1.0 ( PCM software version 04035AD1/0304, Standard Production ) to SW Version 2.1 ( PCM software version 04202MD1/1805, upgrade version Model Level A ).

Then, I used 000.043.205.47.002 and successfully upgraded from SW Version 2.1 ( PCM software version 04202MD1/1805, upgrade version Model Level A ) to SW Version 3.1 ( PCM software version 05024BD1/1705, upgrade version Model Level B ). I also used 000.044.901.40 ( which is part of the latest and greatest 955.044.903.61 and I am using North America 2009 maps ).

Here's the question: how do I upgrade to Model Level C, Model Level C1? ( which seem to be the highest upgrade possible for PCM2.1 ) I thought that 955.044.903.61 would bring me up to the latest PCM software version and up to the latest maps... I do have the latest maps, but my PCM apparently was not updated all the way through ( it remains in SW Version 3.1, Model Level B )...

I'd be grateful for any assistance folks on here may be able to provide. Thanks in advance.

  7. PCM 2.1 Multimedia unit manual says only CD Slot of PCM has got MP3 playback feature.

I have a 05 turbo with PCM 2.1 DVD nav, single disk in dash and 6 cd changer out back. I am working on an iPhone interface (probably just an FM modulator really) but in the meantime does the 6 disk changer play MP3's? The wife doesn't have that much stuff on her Ipod. I could get the majority onto 6 MP3 CD's for now.

    Thanks,

    Aaron

  8. Hi,

your PCM unit version shows 04202xxx, e.g. should be model level A, but the SW versions shows 1.0, indicating model level Standard. I guess your model level is somewhere between Standard and A (SW versions 2.x).

New DVD Navigation discs (maps 08.2007 or 08.2009) are compatible with PCM 2.1 Multimedia model levels B and C only.

Thereafter, you have to update PCM 2.1 Multimedia unit up-to the model level B (SW versions 3.x / PCM unit 05024xxx) at least. Navigation system update CD and Navigation maps DVD are common for 955- and 997- kits.

Thereafter, you need either individual PCM 2.1 Multimedia model level A (first step) and B (next step) update CDs for CAYENNE, or similar CD set from 955- kit (e.g. for CAYENNE). Update process can be complicated, because Bose Amplifier and CD units may require additional repair kit CDs (if update CD are not from the latest kit release). I strongly recommend to find someone experienced, or at least to study corresponding TSB (installation and conversion instructions).

    Hi

Thanks for the reply. Unfortunately, the system does not seem to be able to read the new DVD.

I think that the firmware of the PCM needs to be updated first before you can read the new DVD format.

    Could someone please advise?

    Regards,

    Alex

  9. You already got PCM 2.1 Multimedia model level C (PCM unit version is 05395xxx, e.g. SW Versions 4.x). Thereafter, you have to update Navigation System unit only (via external DVD-Navigation module) - check TSB for details.

Does anybody know, which software Level is needed, if I want to use the new 01/2010 Navigation DVD?

    My PCM is Version 4.0

    PCM Version : 05395BD1

    Navigation : 00174436

Is there any need to update the pcm to any higher level?

My Porsche Dealer told me, that they have to connect the whole car to the diagnostic system fpr 45 min. to update many things. Cost nearly 200$

I called Porsche Stuttgart (Development Department). They told me, that the only thing ist to put in a CD in the PCM an press OK.

Next and final step is to put in the DVD in an upgrade as usually.

I think, they want to rip me my money for nothing ;)

    Kind regards

    Jens

  10. It depends on your model level (MODELLPFLEGE or MOPF) of PCM 2.1 Multimedia unit. PCM 2.1 Multimedia update CDs to model level A & B in 997- (911 BOXTER CAYMAN) kit are different from those one in 955- (CAYENNE) kit.

You have to check (press the "MAIN" and "TRIP" buttons simultaneously), whether your PCM 2.1 Multimedia SW version is at least 3.x (Unit:PCM 05024xxx) e.g. model level B. If not, you will need additional (CAYENNE) CDs to correctly update PCM 2.1 Multimedia unit to model level B or C.

    000.043.205.47.003 PCM2.1 MODELLPFLEGE-A UPDATE 06.2005

    000.043.205.50.001 PCM2.1 BOSE-UPDATE-CD MOPF-A (CAYENNE)

    000.043.205.47.002 PCM2.1 UPDATE-CD MODELLPFLEGE-B (CAYENNE)

    000.043.205.47.004 PCM2.1 MODELLPFLEGE-B REPAIR KIT CD-SINGLE MY06 (CAYENNE)

From the PCM 2.1 Multimedia model level B you can apply the latest common PCM 2.1 Multimedia update CD (Navigation MY08) for correct functioning of new DVD-Navigation disc in external DVD-Navigation unit.

    000.044.901.40 PCM2.1 MULTIMEDIA UPDATE LEVEL-C MY08 (911 BOXTER CAYMAN CAYENNE)

DVD-Navigation disc is common for the both of 997- and 955- kits (identical release).

Notice: Above listed part numbers and releases may vary, so you should check corresponding TSB.

  11. Try this simple test before visiting repair shop:

    0. Stop and start your engine (in case you got already fault message)

    1. Activate off-road /Low Range mode/ driving program (use rocker switch) with gear shift lever in neutral position

    2. Drive your car for a while (move forward/backward several meters)

    3. Activate on-road /High Range mode/ driving program (use rocker switch) with gear shift lever in neutral position

It may "heal" your all-wheel drive system, e.g. resistor, which identifes mode in which system is and generates fault message when corroded - it happens when you do not use this feature for a long time...

  12. Very known problem

Some hints I got from workshop:

    1. Check front cabling system (sometimes wires and/or connectors are corroded, which generates accidental faults) - there was a case they had to replace or fix wires on 3 years(!) old car, front cabling replacement is very expensive due to engine removal need

    2. Check headlight connector (sometimes they had to physically remove electrical connector from the back of the headlight assembly and wired it to fix increasing distance between connector parts - then you have to pull it out slightly and disconnect connector before complete removal of headlight assembly)
